Neighbours kid smoking weed in garden

Neighbours are on holiday, and the teen son (somewhere between 17 and 20) is smoking weed in their garden. We had our doors open and the house stinks for the second day in a row.
Would you:

  • suck it up
  • text the neighbour
  • anonymous report to police

The first one.

Why isn’t it an option to approach the teen and ask them to stop smoking weed in the garden?

This sounds like a good plan to me, followed up by a chat with the parents if it isn’t taken on board.

Snakeandladder · 31/05/2025 20:23

We had this. I passively aggressively spoke to my young DC very loudly "YES THAT IS A FUNNY SMELL ISNT IT? ITS NOT NICE IS IT? IT WOULD BE BETTER IF THAT SMOKE WASNT BLOWING ACROSS YOUR PLAY EQUIPMENT DURING THE DAY" and neighbours teen girl stopped it at least during daytime hours.

SlugsWon · 31/05/2025 20:23

Ask the kid to smoke his spliff at the bottom of the garden. Don't be scared of talking to a 17 year old, he will most likely scuttle off!

Growuppeople · 31/05/2025 20:25

The police won’t do anything and he’s okd enough. Who cares!? You smell it for like a minute it isn’t a big deal

JellyAnd · 31/05/2025 20:31

Stick your head over the fence and ask him to go to the other end of the garden and/or vape it instead?

Old enough for what? It’s illegal. Even cigarettes are illegal at 17.

feelingbleh · 31/05/2025 20:37

Well if their not sharing id definitely grass them up. No seriously leave them alone.

Why should she leave it alone? It’s causing her a problem.

ChaliceinWonderland · 31/05/2025 20:48

Call hix parents. If that was my son I'd want to know

Thanks for the advice, dh and i had different opinions so this has been useful! We will ignore for now and maybe mention it to the kid next time it's an issue.
However, the house still smells over 2 hours later! We don't care he's smoking weed, just don't like the smell in our house with 2 young kids.

He likely doesn't know that it's bothering you, we just asked our next door teen and boyfriend to move somewhere else to smoke cos it was stinking the house out, so they did end of.

F1LandoFan · 31/05/2025 23:14

Like others have said, I’d ask him to move down the garden as he’s making your house smell green! He probably has no idea.
I def wouldn’t grass him up to parents or police

They can do whatever they like on their property if op doesn't like it she can shut her doors. Their parents will be back soon and they will most likely stop. It's a bit of weed be greatful they're not having parties every night.

People can’t do whatever they like if it negatively impacts other people.

faerietales · 31/05/2025 23:24

It wouldn't occur to me to do anything. You can constantly smell weed around here 🤷‍♀️

So if you neighbour complained because you had a bbq you would never bbq again or they thought your washing machine was to loud would you start hand washing. Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't mean you have to change your life to suit them

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 31/05/2025 23:26

He's smoking in the garden so he doesn't stink up his own house !

You could say (loudly) "What the Hell is that stench"? to your DH outside so NDN knows that you know.

It;s his choice to smoke it but your DC shouldn't be subjected to it .

(Our NDN used to smoke it , it travels !)

There's a massive difference between a BBQ (I'm not a fan myself , but I cannot stop other people , I just need to get my washing in first )
Washing machine , sometimes they are noisy especially at night . But sometimes you have to run it overnight . If you need something washed urgently , or something is soiled .
No-one needs to smoke weed ,

You are intentionally missing the point and you know it

There are hundreds of threads in here about people who have neighbours smoking weed. My house absolutely stinks of the stuff. Turns out my neighbours can do whatever they like regardless of the impact. The police, council and social services have not done a single thing despite several reports

Keep going with the reports and try your local councilor
