Good Morning Mumsnet! What's everyone up to today?

I'm just finishing my first cuppa of the day, in my kitchen spot. Mountaineer cat woke me at 6am, so I kicked him out & he came back to bed 🤣. He's just been for another cuddle & now wandered off, probably back to bed again. Girl cat's in the living room window watching the people on the street.

The girls are the only ones with anything much planned today I think. They're taking my card & going for father's day cards and a gift. They were coming with me to my appointment, yesterday, then we were stopping off on the way home but neither of them got up. They'll more than likely wander elsewhere too, and get lunch together in town before heading back.

I've got some peg dolls to add details to, and then varnish. So that's what I'll be doing. I need to order a Tesco delivery too, nip to Lidl for something for tonight's tea, and see if my dad's free to nip for cat litter. If I get round to it, I'll list some more things on Vinted.

Later on, it'll be showers all round, then I'll carry on with the crochet yeti. I'm not sure he'll be finished by Monday - we'll see!

What about all of you? 🙂

Wishing u all a happy and safe day x

chickenfordinner · 31/05/2025 09:38

Oh rainbow I’m sorry. I completely get what you mean about the relief if he was agitated, so hard to see. Have a gentle weekend ❤️❤️❤️❤️

we have been away for half term and stopped off to see friends on the LONG drive home so just having premier inn breakfast (DDs favourite!) then will do the last few hours. Home to piles of washing, but be nice to be home.

Have a good weekend everyone

Simonjt · 31/05/2025 09:45

Morning, we are very lucky and we’re having a little childfree break, they’ll cause absolute chaos and get away with murder as their favourite uncle and his partner are looking after them, the poor sods will be run ragged 🤣

The airport is busy as always, I’m obviously checking that I haven’t lost my passport around every seven seconds. My husband went for a wee twenty minutes ago and hasn’t been seen since, so god knows what he’s buying.

I hope you all have a nice Saturday, the weather is meant to be good in most of the UK today.

LadyFooFooFrankentits · 31/05/2025 09:51

Packing up to vacate a youth hostel. Long journey home tonight and all of tomorrow...

Rainbow1235 · 31/05/2025 09:55

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 31/05/2025 09:57

Good morning Lucysmam and others. Rainbow my condolences. My mum died in April and I'm dealing with the estate because my brother is useless.
I've had two coffees to wake me up, then two cups of tea and two slices of toast. I stripped the bed and it's washed while I went to Aldi. It's now tumbling away and the dishwasher is churning too. Shortly I will clean the bathroom then wash the windows. I'll change the duvet cover too and get it in the machine. I'm taking my time because I'm still recuperating from a cataract op (three weeks and counting) but definitely need to get back to normal. I'm eating from the freezer so I can defrost it- it's badly needed - so tonight will be steak casserole with dumplings. Lunch is pea and ham soup. Have a good day all

lucysmam · 31/05/2025 09:57

@Rainbow1235 I'm sorry to read about your dad. It sounds like he was very loved 💐

@Simonjt your post made me laugh - I'm in the "check I haven't lost anything every few seconds" brigade too. Or that no one has stolen my purse...from my zipped up bag, that's under my arm, with the zipped bit against my body 🤣🙈. I check my zip repeatedly at gigs too...everyone dancing away & there's me "yep, still zipped & can feel my little purse". I hope your husband is buying something good & you both enjoy your break!

Crikey @LadyFooFooFrankentits that sounds like an epic journey!

Good morning, I’m still sitting on the couch I’m going to make another coffee then go in the shower, do some housework then meet my dm and dd for lunch.

@Rainbow1235 I’m sorry for your loss, I hope today isn’t too difficult for you x

PlutarchHeavensbee · 31/05/2025 09:59

Trying to reorganise my art and lampworking studio which is now crammed full of so much glass, paint and other shite I literally can’t turn around in it - let alone work! It’s gonna be a long-ass day…

DilemmaDelilah · 31/05/2025 10:00

Good morning @lucysmam and everyone. It sounds like you will have a nice relaxed day today.

I don't have anything in particular planned for today. Mr Dilemma has gone out to strim the patch of grass outside our house (that should be maintained by the council but isn't). There is a patch bordering our hedge, which then turns 90 degrees alongside a wall which borders a parking area for some of the other houses. We (as in Mr Dilemma) keep the bit along our hedge and around the corner to the break in the wall which is the entrance to the parking area strimmed, another household does the bit on the other side of the entrance. If neither of us did it there would just be a huge weed patch with other people's rubbish in it. We planted our hedge to stop people chucking rubbish into the stream it borders. It's very prickly berberis and it seems to be working!

I will probably go and sort out some of the laundry which is currently residing on the bed in the 'big' (as opposed to tiny) spare room. That room was used as a dumping ground when we were converting the office into the tiny spare room so it still has quite a lot of random things in there which need putting away - not half as much now as before though!

I must also remember to put light mayonnaise on my shopping list. Eldest daughter's birthday is coming up and she always chooses to have coronation chicken for her special meal. I will also make the coronation flavouring for the mayonnaise. It's quite complicated and takes a bit of time, so I like to make it in advance and freeze it if I can. I can't run the risk of having a bad day when I need to make the coronation chicken and not being able to do it. I know there are lots of people who will just stir curry powder into mayonnaise, but I cook onions and garlic until they are soft, add the curry paste and a little tomato puree, fry them off, then add a little water or chicken stock and let it simmer for an hour or so until really well softened. Then I pass it through a sieve so that I have a smooth sauce that I can just add to the mayonnaise when I need to, with some soaked sultanas and the chicken. I have no idea whether it is 'better' than doing it another way, but it is more or less (probably less) the way I saw my sister doing it years ago and it tastes nice. I may also do the sweet and sour dressing for the noodle salad she likes as well - it's based (loosely) on a Jocelyn Dimbleby recipe for carrot salad with a sweet and sour dressing. It doesn't take too long but it's good to get things done in advance If I can.

If it was going to be sunny all day I would wash a pillow or two, but it isn't so I won't.

PermanentTemporary · 31/05/2025 10:05

Good morning all. That sounds delicious Dilemma - might try a veggie version of that.

I'm in the bath finishing my second coffee. Recovering from FIL's funeral yesterday and thinking about dp's dad's funeral soon. It means no fathers left for father's day as dh died some years ago. But I should think dp's kids will be in touch tomorrow.

Lunch with dp's mum, then I hope we will go for a walk this afternoon and I'm going to try making chapatis - I bought Chapati flour months ago but haven't got round to it. Will do it with chickpea coconut and spinach curry.

Velvetbee · 31/05/2025 10:06

Good morning, 3 of us had a Premier Inn breakfast and are at a sports event at Loughborough university today. DH is fully involved as a coach but I can’t watch, I get too tense. Nice warm sports hall for a change, lovely facilities. I’m already elbow deep in the picnic lunch too, had better pace myself.

VictorianScreenTime · 31/05/2025 10:07

Flowers to you @Rainbow1235 x

@PlutarchHeavensbee just think of how lovely the space will be by the end of your long ass day though- I absolutely love a good massive clear out. V therapeutic.

I’m sitting in my rocking chair looking out at our lovely garden bursting with trees and wildflowers and birds. The DC are out on the swings- DD1 has her beloved rescue chicken on her lap for a gentle swing before she’s put on the grass to peck to her heart’s content😂

We’ve got a family exercise class in an hour and then have to pick out paint for our new front door (old one leaking and being replaced today). DC and I want pink! DH not keen. So will spend remainder of morning wearing him down 😁

Interested in everyone’s dinner plans as I haven’t a clue what to make!

lucysmam · 31/05/2025 10:08

@PermanentTemporary your curry sounds lovely 😋. I'm stuck in a dreadful can't be arsed to cook rut lately. A shame because I do usually enjoy it.

PermanentTemporary · 31/05/2025 10:11

@lucysmam we have lots of 'bits' meals involving cheese, crackers and salad I have to say. I'm lucky that dp is a good cook too. Makes it easier to do my time in the kitchen.

DilemmaDelilah · 31/05/2025 10:11

@Rainbow1235 I'm very sorry for your loss. There is always so much to do afterwards I found it exhausting. Something I found useful was to have a whiteboard to remind myself of all the things I needed to do and when.

I hope you have all the support you need.

gingercat02 · 31/05/2025 10:15

@Rainbow1235 💔

Giggorata · 31/05/2025 10:21

Good morning lucysmam and all.
I am drinking tea and about to repot some herbs and pull a few weeds in the house garden. Laundry is happening
Then I will continue my apparently hopeless search for a plumber. ☹️

DH isn't very mobile at the moment, so I am also ministering unto him, and the dogs.
Luckily, a friend has offered to take the dogs out with hers, which works well for one dog, as they all know each other and often walk together, but the lab won't go with her (or anyone) unless on a lead. The minute she gets let off, she runs like a black greyhound back to DH in the car. “MyHuman, that woman tried to kidnap me!”

Later this afternoon, I am conducting a wedding and this evening I am meeting with my coven and guests. Weather permitting, we will be outside, with a large fire. 🍷

My condolences to you, Rainbow 1235. 💐

DilemmaDelilah · 31/05/2025 10:25

@VictorianScreenTime I have absolutely no problem clearing things out and sorting them - what I have a HUGE problem with it what to do with the things once I have done that! I end up with a beautifully clean, neat and tidy room/cupboard/shed with a huge pile, or more likely several (usually quite neat) piles of stuff in the middle/outside that I have absolutely no clue what to do with!

I'm doing a lot of clearing out at the moment so that I don't leave a big mess for my children/husband when I pop my clogs. It is difficult to be ruthless, especially when they are nice/special/sentimental/expensive things. I have kept all my semi-precious gemstone beads and pearls from when I used to make jewellery - but I know I won't be doing it again so I really ought to get rid of them.

DilemmaDelilah · 31/05/2025 10:27

@Giggorata if you live anywhere near me (Devon) I know an excellent plumber who is a!says willing to go the extra mile.

gingercat02 · 31/05/2025 10:28

We have been away visiting the in laws since Monday so I have a houseful of washing to do. First load is on, just polished off my first coffee, the coffee where we were staying was awful so good to be home just for that.
It's quite overcast here which is disappointing. We have a bit of gardening to do and I have a hair appointment this afternoon.
DS is out for a bbq at a friend's tonight, as we have been away most of HT so DH and I can please ourselves for tea and catch up on some telly we missed while we were away.

VictorianScreenTime · 31/05/2025 10:33

@DilemmaDelilah i have the same problem! Currently have a small mountain of bagged and boxed items in the hall ostensibly for charity shops but I can’t seem to move them on🫣

RabbitsRock · 31/05/2025 10:36

Good morning @lucysmam & everyone. Rainbow1235 very sorry to hear about your DF 💐 Thinking of you & your family.
Not long up, although I was awake very early when DH’s alarm went off. He’s doing a half day & planning a bike ride later. Had a cuppa brought to me in bed with figrolls. Just brewing another one but also poured a glass of flavoured tonic water. Decided against the tea. DD16 has a friend coming over soon. They will be making plans for a festival in a couple of weeks. I quite fancy leftover lamb rogan josh & pilau rice for brunch. Not sure what’s for tea yet. Maybe quorn nuggets with chips & peas. Need to check the chip situation & do next week’s meal plan. The freezer’s getting rather full so we can use up some stuff. DH will shower me & wash my hair at some point. Can’t wait for the day I can shower properly! Will definitely never take my independence for granted again. Which reminds me, I need to do my first lot of physio. Supposed to do 4 sessions a day. Oh & the linen basket is full so DH or I will put a load on. It wouldn’t occur to DD to offer. Work in progress there! Dishwasher needs unloading/loading & salt putting in. DH said he will hoover all the rabbit poo up. He needs to buy some straw too. Watching the BGT final tonight. Have a good day all 🙂

PearlsPearl · 31/05/2025 10:44

Morning all, I am happily still in bed, DW brought me a cuppa before she went to walk the dogs and my laptop so I've had a truly indulgently lazy morning! Rare these days as I usually have aqua at 9, but I cancelled it last night as was really very tired.

I am about to get up and have a shower then we'll have a brunch of scrambled egg on toast. We're going to see Moulin Rouge in Edinburgh today, and I'm excited, love a day out. We'll get some food in town too afterwards, not sure what yet.

Just a nice chilled day ahead with DW. Just what I needed. Had a heavy period this week so wanted to take it easy today.

Have a good day folks and Rainbow I'm sorry for your loss. Also DilemmaDelilah I really want your coronation chicken.

ElliotNess · 31/05/2025 10:48

I’m sorry for your loss @Rainbow1235. Be kind to yourself over the next few weeks.

Black coffee for breakfast, new kitten fed & showers all round. Later I’m taking DC and a gaggle of their friends to the cinema. Hoping to get some washing done today and then with the evening free, I’ve got a project I need to complete.
