How would you have dealt with this?

I was at my hobby and few days ago. The teacher wanted to do a special project so that's what we did. It was suppose to be fun and a laugh. Obviously we are all being taught at the same time so not everyone gets it the first time which is fine and I'm understanding of that.

However a few people there decided to take it upon themselves to start snapping at me and another person. They wanted us to go faster which we couldn't physically do! I then heard bitchy comments which were quiet but loud enough I could hear. I bit my tongue and tried to shrug it off.

After a few more times of them snapping "faster" i snapped and said I'm going as fast as I can! They did then stop making comments. Then later one of the women started to try boss me around again and telling me I weren't doing something right. There was no right or wrong but I just weren't doing it the way she wanted. She's not the teacher. I just ignored her but it made me so cross because it was suppose to be a fun night! I heard her and the others making comments about others too. I absolutely hate mean girl energy and comments. I don't know why people feel the need for it.

How would you of dealt with this situation? Would you have done anything differently?

this had bugger all to do with “mean girl energy”…. What are you on about?

WardrobeDragonBreath · 31/05/2025 08:52

I think we need to know what the hobby is. How was your lack of speed affecting the other person?

We're you working individually or as part of a team? Could the rest of the people not move on untill you'd completed your part? Were you pushing the mouthy woman on a roundabout?

healthybychristmas · 31/05/2025 08:55

I think you should've made the comment about mean girls, TBH. It won't be the first time they've heard it.

Oh pretty please tell us this hobby OP!!

I feel if I say the hobby it would be very outing!
It doesn't involve any equipment though and yes we worked as a team. There was 1 person in front who dictated how fast we could all go but that poor girl was going as fast as she could. I did have to keep prompting her but as I said not everyone learns as fast as others

Rowing?

GreenCandleWax · 31/05/2025 09:17

Rowing?

In that case… teammates telling the team to “go faster” is totally normal!

smallglassbottle · 31/05/2025 10:16

Competitive crochet?

EBearhug · 31/05/2025 10:26

It can't be rowing or crochet if there's no equipment involved.

I don't know how I'd deal with it. If it's down to physical fitness and stamina, I can work on that long term, but can't change it in an instant. I'd probably point out physical limitations at the time, and possibly raise a point about constructive criticism rather than snide comments later, but it would depend a lot on how long I'd been with the group, the general group dynamics, whether I wanted to continue - all sorts of things.

I've been there a while. I know the girls who were making comments but wouldn't say massively close to them or socialise outside the hobby. This night was purely for fun, nothing competition involved. I feel like they put a damper on the night for me a bit

How can anyone possibly say them, if the hobby would specifically identify you then by definition there can't be anyone else doing it so how can we make an informed judgement
