Anyone recognise this film?

I watched this film in the late 80s or early 90s when I would’ve been between the ages of around 7-10. I can hardly remember anything about it but I was obsessed with it. Over the years I’ve tried searching it up many times but had nothing come back.
I can only remember two scenes. One is where the characters are sitting around a fire (I think there are two of them and they are either teens or children) and decide to become blood brothers/sisters (I can’t even remember if they were girls or boys). They use a stick to cut themselves on the hand/finger/arm rub them together and call themselves blood brothers (or sisters).
There is another scene that sticks in my head where rabbits were running up a green bank and being shot at, absolutely no idea who was shooting at them or why but I remember being absolutely petrified.
Does anyone have any idea what it could’ve been?

Try the Turner FB group. People on there can identify any movie.

An Australian film called Celia maybe?
Set in the 50s when there was a panic in Australia about rabbits spreading diseases.

They do the blood brother thing in My Girl

No I love that movie and definitely wasn’t that but who can forget barfarama!

Gawd yeah. I was kind of glad blueberry pie wasn't a staple in this country! 🤣

Moonlightdust · 29/05/2025 17:28

All I can think of with rabbits running is Watership Down - could you be mixing 2 movies up?

IReallyLoveItHere · 29/05/2025 17:31

The wilderness family?

24Dogcuddler · 29/05/2025 18:19

Could it be Rabbit Proof Fence? Might be too late but there’s a camp fire scene.

Gundogday · 29/05/2025 18:32

Lord of the Flies?

BrightWolf · 29/05/2025 20:01

Thanks everyone! Ooh @Needmorelego it could be that! I’ve tried to find out if there was a blood brothers campfire scene and I can’t find anything but it fits the kind of vibe I remember. I’ll have to try and find somewhere I can watch it.
It isn’t Stand by Me, My Girl or Watership Down but thanks for the suggestions @saltwater1985 @BobbyBiscuits and @Moonlightdust - I have seen all those films and loved them.

Lord of the Flies?

I don’t think so as I’ve read the book and feel like I would’ve linked the two in my mind if I’d seen the film too, but you never know. I’ll have to watch it and find out, thanks!

Was it a Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn film? Can't remember a specific name and may have been a TV series but I remember a scene like that.

That’s a bit too late, I can distinctly remember watching it when little but thanks for the suggestion!

I don’t think it’s that but thanks for the suggestion. It actually sounds like a good film, might give it a watch anyway 😄

Stand by Me (1986)?

Needmorelego · 29/05/2025 20:23

@BrightWolf ooh I am hoping I am right with "Celia".
I remember the actress Rebecca Smart played Celia and in the 80s she seemed to appear in just about every Australian TV drama made 😂
I remember it being set in a long hot summer and the children spent a lot of time running around in a local quarry.
Celia had to give up her pet rabbit as the Australian government made keeping pet rabbits illegal.
There was something about the neighbour family being communists.
I had a copy on video tape - no idea if it's available anywhere now.

Blackdow · 29/05/2025 20:31

ChatGPT is really good at identifying movies from a few details. I use it all the time when I can’t remember something. It has no idea about this! Are you sure the scenes happened like that?

Edit; the only thing it came up with was Celia but the scene is very different from how OP described it. They burn effigies, they don’t do a blood bonding thing.

WhatICallMyUsername · 29/05/2025 20:32

IMBD says Ceila was rated 15 so hopefully the OP wasn’t watching it at age 7-10!

ChatGPT is suggesting The Cure (1995) along with others you’ve already discounted

WhatICallMyUsername · 29/05/2025 20:33

Haha cross post @Blackdow I’ve got loads of suggestions from it!

Needmorelego · 29/05/2025 20:40

@WhatICallMyUsername Stand By Me was also a 15 back in them days (I think it's be downgraded to a 12 now).
I do remember Celia as a being bit "dark and creepy".
I really want to re-watch it now.

Yes! God I loved that film

Goalie55 · 29/05/2025 21:21

Ii loved Celia, Channel 4 used fo show a lot of Australian movies at point.

BrightWolf · 29/05/2025 21:25

@Needmorelego I am convinced that it’s definitely Celia! I watched the trailer and it had the blood bonding scene as I remember it! And with it having the rabbits storyline too, it must be it!
It’s on Amazon prime so I’m going to watch it and I’ll report back.
@WhatICallMyUsername I don’t think my parents would’ve cared/noticed I was watching a 15, I watched loads of unsuitable stuff when I was growing up 🙈
