how many steps do you do a day?

hareclive · 28/05/2025 19:08

on average? Mac mum and minimum etc?

I am interested because I have a chronic illness which affects my mobility and causes fatigue but I try and walk, for all the usual reasons. I know that 10,000 is what everyone is supposed to aim for but I'm trying to gauge what is normal/average. I used to aim for 6000 a day but it has declined over the last year especially and my daily average is just over 2000 a day. this includes 2 or 3 days a week when I stay in bed mostly and do 200/300 steps....so some days I am still walking 6000

just interested in comparing, if anyone doesn't mind sharing?

I just checked my Garmin stats. In the last 4 weeks I have reached over 10k steps on 15 days (some only just). Lowest was 7k steps. Highest was 18k steps but that includes walking about 1.4k on the school run, a 5k run, the supermarket shopping and hoovering the house. I have quite an active job and can end up walking a fair bit during my working day. However at the weekend, if we have no plans, I barely reach 5k steps.

Sheknowsaboutme · 28/05/2025 20:41

No idea. Do people always wear a watch or carry a phone with them?

lljkk · 28/05/2025 21:01

10,000 steps is roughly 2 hours of walking, or about 6 miles, 9km.
I mention that because I am on pokemon Go facebook pages. There is a PoGo task where you have to walk 25km/week in 8 separate weeks.

So many of the players MOAN about how 25km/week (or 3.6km/day, or about 3000 steps/day) is obviously impossible, and not because they are disabled, either.

From that recurring moaning and lots of sympathy & instructins how to use electronic walkers to walk the phone for you... I presume that plenty of people walk far less than 3000 steps/day. OP is not unusual.

what the heck, that really surprises me! like @whatwasthatnoise , when I was healthy, doing a school run twice a day and going out to work I was easily surpassing 10k

I track mine on my phone. I don't know how common it is to track steps, I would assume plenty of people do🤷🏼‍♀️

Really depends. DH and I share the dog walks and DH usually does morning school run and I do afternoon. If I do both school runs and dog walk up to 15k. Very occasionally ill do none of the above so about 3k,.usually somewhere in between

28Fluctuations · 28/05/2025 22:04

It is rare that I walk less than 10000/day. 12- 14000 is more usual, but I do have a very active job and a dog that needs walking so I reach that without too much 'extra' effort. I mean, I never specifically try to reach 10000.

Radiatorvalves · 28/05/2025 22:07

I do an average 10k but occasionally up towards 30k. That said I had an operation in April and since then I’ve done very little. Managed 12k today snd I’m exhausted.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 28/05/2025 22:10

How many steps do you do a day?

As few as possible.
🤣

newbie202020 · 28/05/2025 22:10

Between 18k - 20k steps a day. Can do a lot more on busy days!

Chewingnum · 28/05/2025 22:11

Slowly building my fitness back up after an awful health year last year, last two months I’ve done at least 10k every day.

MirandaWest · 28/05/2025 22:11

My average this year is a bit over 14,000. I do run most days and walk an amount too. I work from home and so do make an effort to get out as much as I can.

This year I haven’t done as many steps as in previous years for a number of reasons.

doodleschnoodle · 28/05/2025 22:11

I do between 10-15k most days thanks to walking the school runs and then walking with DD2 to our various activities. If I’m staying at home at the weekend and pottering, it’s more like 3k.

10,000 is a pretty arbitrary number, there’s no real scientific basis behind it. It was chosen IIRC for marketing pedometers, and it’s just a nice round number.

Copiousamountsofpulses · 28/05/2025 22:14

Less than 2000 on a work day, long sedentary days sat at a desk. I really, really need to improve this! More like 6k-10k on a day off but its still not great.

Amammai · 28/05/2025 22:15

I’ve been mindfully tracking mine with a cheap smart watch I got recently. I aim for a minimum of 10,000 per day and usually reach around 12-13,000. This is a mixture of an active job and looking after two very active children. I try to go for a walk each day for 30-60mins too (depending on how many steps I’ve done earlier in the day) Already feeling better for doing it for the last 6weeks.

PizzaSophiaLoren · 28/05/2025 22:16

I’ve looked at my annual average and it’s 6500 ish.

PizzaSophiaLoren · 28/05/2025 22:17

But I don’t carry my phone everywhere.

AlteredStater · 28/05/2025 22:17

I've a chronic illness so around 500 steps a day. Used to manage up to 3,000 a day a few years ago but that's too much now.

MrsSunshine2b · 28/05/2025 22:18

I set myself a goal to do a minimum of 5000 every day in May. I work from home. My daughter goes to school about 1.5 miles away, and there's no way I could take an hour out of work twice a day to walk her there and back. Unless you're a SAHP I really don't see how people are walking on the school run, unless school is 5 minutes walk away, in which case, surely it's not that many steps.

I go for a walk on my lunchbreak and ~4000 steps takes me around 45 minutes

Then I finish work at 6ish and have to make dinner, then get DD to bed.

10,000 steps is 5 miles, or 2 hours of walking. I do not understand how anyone is working a full time job, looking after their children and managing to take 2 hours out of their day for a walk.

I think it's pretty much impossible unless you don't work or have kids, or you're in a very active job.

I'm currently on annual leave and both DH and I have hit 10k every day- for example, today, DH went for a run this morning and then took the kids to play at the outdoor pool in town, and I walked into town which is about 3 miles to meet them there, and then took the kids to walk around the town centre together. That's just not feasible on a normal work day.

Picklechicken · 28/05/2025 22:19

I track mine on my phone but if I am just at home obviously I’m not walking about with my phone stuck to me so it won’t be as high as someone with a watch etc. My average is about 4-6k a day. I have complex health issues and I’m not as active as I used to be. I find the Active 10 app very good as it encourages you to walk briskly and you try and aim for 30 mins of brisk walking a day which I mostly manage to do.

socks1107 · 28/05/2025 22:20

@18kx5 days a week. I have a very active job and have an hours walk with dh when I get home

EcoCustard · 28/05/2025 22:24

I’m currently at 18,000 daily minimum. I walk to work, in a job that involves me always walking around and I have a Spaniel who with the longer days gets longer walks. On busier days it’s 20,000 minimum. I also go for longer walks at the weekend. I love to walk & hike. I track my steps with a cheap watch with step counter off Amazon, it’s really good. I have the off day where I might not meet 8,000 steps, it’s rare & I feel crap. I will add my colleagues & friends think I’m a bit odd walking & I will choose to walk over driving as it’s my bit of ‘Alone’ time & I listen to an audiobook on my walking commute. My winter count is between 12,000-15,000 steps max.

HolidayBrochure · 28/05/2025 22:27

if I don’t actively decide to go for a walk or maybe a run I do less than 3000. At the moment I’m trying to hit 10k a day but I need to get out and do a 50 minute walk otherwise I won’t hit that target.

don’t be hard on yourself OP. It sounds like you’re going through a difficult time.

Femalefootyfan · 28/05/2025 22:29

I track steps wearing a Fitbit and on average, is usually between 13-15,000 per day, sometimes more. I walk for at least an hour every day, usually in the morning and I keep active during the day, it’s surprising how quickly step count can increase. Last week, my step count for the week was over 117,000 but this week will undoubtedly be less. I’m a bit obsessed with steps, quite possibly too obsessed!
