how many steps do you do a day?

hareclive · 28/05/2025 19:08

on average? Mac mum and minimum etc?

I am interested because I have a chronic illness which affects my mobility and causes fatigue but I try and walk, for all the usual reasons. I know that 10,000 is what everyone is supposed to aim for but I'm trying to gauge what is normal/average. I used to aim for 6000 a day but it has declined over the last year especially and my daily average is just over 2000 a day. this includes 2 or 3 days a week when I stay in bed mostly and do 200/300 steps....so some days I am still walking 6000

just interested in comparing, if anyone doesn't mind sharing?

As a PP has said, the 10k steps thing is completely made up. One less thing to think about.

Cynic17 · 29/05/2025 10:53

I have no idea, because it is a totally useless bit of information. I am not a professional athlete, therefore wearing a Garmin or similar would be annoying and pointless.
Why can't people just enjoy life without fussing over these things? If you want to exercise, then do it - you don't need to measure what you've done.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/05/2025 10:55

I know there's no evidence for 10,000 steps being a magic number but that's what I do without fail every day. Sometimes more. Never less. It's a bit obsessive.

10,000 steps is roughly 2 hours of walking, or about 6 miles, 9km.
I mention that because I am on pokemon Go facebook pages. There is a PoGo task where you have to walk 25km/week in 8 separate weeks.

So many of the players MOAN about how 25km/week (or 3.6km/day, or about 3000 steps/day) is obviously impossible, and not because they are disabled, either.

From that recurring moaning and lots of sympathy & instructins how to use electronic walkers to walk the phone for you... I presume that plenty of people walk far less than 3000 steps/day. OP is not unusual.

6 miles?! Where on earth am I walking to?

Day to day I don’t do anywhere near that. My highest this month was 9300 - and that day involved chasing my disabled stepson round a holiday park. Completely out of the ordinary.

Usually 2000-4000, and some days less than 500.

I sit down for work, drive, and walk whenever is necessary and absolutely no other time 😂

doodleschnoodle · 29/05/2025 10:59

I have a standing desk and an under-desk walking pad which is good for getting some movement in while working. I use it most work days for an hour or so.

Beamur · 29/05/2025 11:05

Around 6k. Sometimes more sometimes less.
Would have been higher when we had a dog.

faerietales · 29/05/2025 11:09

18-22k but I am a dog walker.

terracelane23 · 29/05/2025 11:12

12-20k but I have a manual job and high energy dogs to walk.

NoGames · 29/05/2025 11:32

I don’t do anywhere near 10k on an average day. Probably 4k on a ‘normal’ day for me, more if I go to an exercise class once or twice a week. I would find it impossible to do 10k each day due to my current life circumstances.

Fluffyc1ouds · 29/05/2025 11:35

In the week I do between 2,000-4,000 steps per day as I have a desk job and a long commute. At the weekend I usually do 7,000-12,000 depending on what we're up to.

Because it gives people a fitness goal. Some people are horribly unaware of how sloth-like they are. Only when you see the numbers don't think "Christ, I should move more". Movement is good for you. You don't have to be an athlete to care about your health.

Tripadvisor101 · 29/05/2025 12:25

I usually do between 10k and 20k but probably average about 13,000.

Badbadbunny · 29/05/2025 12:26

Average per step counter is 10k per day, but it ranges between 6k (bad weather day) or 14k (good weather day). Depends whether I walk to work or take the car.

ReignOfError · 29/05/2025 12:32

I don’t carry my phone all the time, so mine may be a little higher, but the phone count has averaged about 6,000 a day over the past year. I’m okay with that as a) I’m still recovering from an injury and surgery, so I’m building my strength and fitness back, and b) I do other exercise - cardio and strength - that isn’t tracked.

No idea. Do people always wear a watch or carry a phone with them?

I asked my Dh for a simple watch that counts steps/tracks basics for Christmas following weightloss and wanting to keep an eye on activity levels.

If I’m at work I do far fewer, but this week I’ve done about 10-12K a day, lots more yesterday due to deciding the patio needed de-mossing and I had to re-secure the dog proof fencing around the flower beds. So far today I’ve done over 7000k, 2 dog walks, one biggish one.

I don’t understand how people do 10K regularly: I did a good 40 minute dog walk in the woods and it was only 5K. Is it just general running round? A supermarket trip adds a couple of thousand.

A 20min walk for me is about 2,500 steps so that sounds about right, generally it's just running around. Sometimes doing housework and laundry and general stuff like that I rack up a few thousand.

I can only do 10k with effort though, I have to make a concerted effort to get my arse off the sofa and out of the house.

It's actually really hard to hit 10,000 if you have a desk job, no dog to walk, you don't go running or to the gym etc. I was reading that 5000 is enough to make a significant difference, so that's what I aim for. I'm just not willing to dedicate any more time out of my day to force more steps in.

5,000 steps is less than an hour of physical movement each day - the fact that we’ve normalised doing such a tiny amount of exercise is really poor.

Exactly.

I can understand people working from home, only managing 2,000 during the day. It's the same for me - but I refuse to allow myself to go to bed on such little activity so I'll go out for a walk in the evening. I can't imagine moving from bed to desk to sofa to bed and feeling anything other than lethargic.

Yep. Don’t get me wrong I do it occasionally when the weather is horrendous or I’m feeling a bit shit, but I couldn’t do it regularly, I’d feel awful.

Pixiedust49 · 29/05/2025 13:15

I’m a teacher so on my feet all day but actually do a surprisingly low number of steps at work. It’s quite a small school and I’m based in one classroom so not a huge amount of walking. I do far more on my days off because I actually have the time to walk. I’d say around 6,000 on a work day, 10-12,000 on a non work day.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/05/2025 13:25

Some of it is making a concerted effort to go for a walk. A lot of it is just running errands and being busy. I think where you live has something to do with it. I live in the city. I rarely drive. It's nearly 2000 steps for me to get to the station. It's about 1,500 steps to Sainsburys. Just walking about to the shops, doctors, gym, post office, school etc all adds up.

I can imagine that in some more rural areas you'd need to drive to get to the gym, school, shops etc which cuts out a lot of those incidental daily steps.

In my case it’s because I don’t drive or live on a bus route, so walking or cycling are built into my working day. Until recently I also walked DS to school, before continuing to work. I used to walk a friend’s dog at lunch time too, as he lived right next to my office. And although I’m an academic, so it’s a sedentary job, a fullish day with several seminars and lectures and meetings can involve a fair amount of walking around a big campus before walking home again. Also, I live close to the city centre, so if I go out at night, I will always walk there, and often back too.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 29/05/2025 13:42

8000 on a bad day and 12-15000 on a good day. Usually with exercise.

2-3 dog walks daily plus general day to day stuff like housework, supermarket shop, going upstairs to the loo etc.

I'm making mysekf do 10k at the moment. I work from home, dog is anxious so isn't walked, nursery is about 800m from the house. DD is 2.5 so wants to walk rather than going in the pram (I miss those days) but I do feel so much better when I hit 10k. Yesterday, however, I had a 24 hour bug and did 300 all day 😂
