A second earthquake in Crete today. Who else is going for half term? Sounds like local’s unbothered by tsunami warning and British media just trying to whip up a storm??

Interesting, I thought many mumsnetters would be off for half term sun!

I’m here now. No one seems concerned in the slightest, which I find odd. It was pretty scary….

EllieQ · 22/05/2025 16:45

We’re going to Crete this week and it’s the first I’ve heard about any earthquakes! I’ll have a look at the other two threads someone has linked to. Which part of Crete are you going to @CreteBound

DonewhatIcando · 22/05/2025 17:02

Dsis lives on Crete, she's not said anything so I wouldn't be too worried.

troppibambini6 · 22/05/2025 17:22

We are flying out on Tuesday. I’m not really sure what to make of it. It seems like a pretty regular occurrence but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous!

CreteBound · 22/05/2025 18:00

@EllieQ - near the capital, in the middle - you?

@CreteBound Near Chania, on the northern coast. Also feeling nervous, but I’m a nervous traveller generally so that doesn’t help!

CreteBound · 23/05/2025 08:27

@EllieQ I’m taking comfort that the locals couldn’t seem to care less!

I’m due to go in a fortnight but thinking of cancelling and booking somewhere else. Yes Crete normally get earthquakes they average 163 a year but so far this year have had 413 above mag 4!
I doubt anything will happen but I am supper cautious and I think it’ll play on my mind all the time I’m there.
link below for stats if anyone is as nerdy as me 😂

@Alyjr won’t you lose a lot of money?

Jewelanemone · 23/05/2025 11:43

Mum lives there, everyone is very used to them and totally unbothered. We're going out in a couple of weeks and I have absolutely no plans to cancel or rearrange.

CreteBound · 23/05/2025 11:56

@Jewelanemone good perspective, thank you!

No, my hotel payment not due until next week and flights are refundable. Think I’m just lucky with this though as I didn’t plan it this way and I know it very unusual.
i would def be going if I couldn’t cancel.

blueberrysoap · 23/05/2025 17:56

Currently in Crete now and was stood on the beach when the earthquake happened. It really wasn’t as bad as it’s been made out to be in the media, the locals didn’t seem to care at all!!

CherryRipe1 · 23/05/2025 17:59

My heating engineer is in Crete, I messaged him about my heating & he told me he was in Crete and everything in his house was rattling & wobbling.

CreteBound · 24/05/2025 20:21

@CherryRipe1does normally live there? I’m not concerned about wobbling objects especially:)

It happened just around the time that my mum usually wakes up in the morning, and she just made herself a cup of tea and went back to bed 🙂 Her cats didn't even wake up!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/05/2025 10:23

AFAIk mild earthquakes are common. I’ve experienced one in Greece (not Crete, Skiathos IIRC) - it felt as if a very heavy lorry had just driven right past. We were having breakfast in the hotel at the time - everybody looked at each other - ‘Was that an earthquake?’ Staff didn’t even seem to notice!

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 25/05/2025 10:25

There was an early morning earthquake when we were in Crete in October a few years ago. None of the staff batted an eyelid

He has a second home there so goes fairly often. He didn't seem bothered, said it was an interesting experience!
