Why is this happening- iphone and Dh’s phone?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2025 16:48

When my dh searches using his iPhone, in his cache/ recent searches he can see literally ALL of my searches. The same does not happen in reverse (I can’t see his)
today he was setting up a new work phone and needed to access an email sent to my gmail. He typed my username and password into a word document on his laptop and then went to gmail in the browser and it opened in MY gmail account without him even needing a password. I have never accessed my gmail on his phone or work laptop!

Now, we are very honest and trusting and have no secrets. I know he wouldn’t read my emails or check my searches intentionally however I don’t like the idea that my privacy is being “invaded” without my knowledge, and it’s clearly something to do with the two iPhones - and in the wrong circumstances that could be catastrophic for someone (imagine DV situation researching escape or similar)

any ideas what settings I must have enabled here to allow this to happen?

Any ideas? <shameless bump>

Do you have each other as Family in Apple accounts? Are you using the same Google account on both phones or have you ever used his phone to search something before and without really noticing clicked the save username & password prompt?

Check Password manager in his iphone settings and google settings for your usernames/email address

Hadalifeonce · 16/05/2025 20:56

DH had a situation where is work phone and private 'phone started linking with each other. He googled it, and was able to change some settings to stop it happening.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2025 21:14

@Eagleyeberrywe do have a family account, although I did look at that and couldn’t see any reason why it would share. I will check again

This has happened to us and we don’t have a family account. Really weird and pisses me off

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/05/2025 21:35

It’s so weird isn’t it @feelingrobbed?!

It makes no sense! I think Apple make strange assumptions when phones are together a lot.

so like when we log on to a new Wi-Fi who ever gets on first it asks them if they want to share the password. But only my husband and I not other friends in the room. Weird!

HappiestSleeping · 16/05/2025 21:56

You've got a linked account somewhere. Either you are both using the same apple id, iTunes account, Gmail account, Microsoft account, or Google account. Somewhere you are syncing in one direction but not the other.

SwanFlight · 16/05/2025 22:02

Any more info on which app you are using? Is this in Safari mobile, accessing Gmail through the web?

I had a hard time trying to explain to my Mum that her Google searches were stored as she was logged into her Google account. So it sounds as if the Google account is logged in, and as such there seems to be magic authentication happening between Youtube, Gmail etc? Google try their hardest for you to log in while in Chrome, and you can inadvertently do it. Check Google search, see which account is associated in the top right. So it sounds to me that you are logged in in a web browser and that account is shared between devices.

Which browser are you using? Are you accessing on a laptop also etc etc?

TisILeClair · 16/05/2025 22:02

It’s not Apple doing this, it will be Google seeing as you are talking about searches and gmail. If you were talking about Apple Mail / iCloud then yes you would be right to suspect something Apple related.

Maybe one of you has used the others phone at some point and it now has both sets of logins on that device. Most likely husband has used your account on his device(s).

However, I do know google also tracks people using their wifi account and location too, so it could actually be to do with that.

UpMyself · 16/05/2025 22:05

There's a setting called Nearby or something like that, and you need to switch it off.

How to Stop Google Searches Appearing on Other Devices

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/05/2025 07:38

Thanks @UpMyself- I’ve managed to switch the safari share off, weirdly none of the other things in that article are available on my phone, it must be an old model.

he’s just got a new handset yesterday as his was old and work replaced it, so it will be interesting to see what happens. I may have at some point used his handset I guess

@SwanFlight I search in safari whereas he always goes to google first and searches in google, which is where my safari searches show in his recent list

SwanFlight · 17/05/2025 09:20

There's usually a default search provider built in the browsers. So if you say use the location bar, you can put in keyword search there or a domain name/web address. If the default search provider for Safari is Google, then there shouldn't be much difference between searching there and searching from Google's search page - and Google's search history is probably available in both. Perhaps use private mode for more delicate searches!

Go to Google, and check the top right account to see if your account is logged in there. As I said it's actually a bit of a bugger to sign out of Google. They want you signed in, for your search history, and to spam you with personalised adverts across the web. I find you can inadvertently get signed back in. You do this when accessing Gmail from the web browser and then don't sign out. You could also turn search history off for your account - but you'll get less personalised results.

Not searches but I can suddenly see DH's call log but he can't see mine.

Take it to an "apple genius" in store and ask

fionamadcat · 17/05/2025 22:51

My DD and I had something similar for a while, if I remember correctly we had set up her 1st phone with my email address. We popped into an Apple shop and they fixed it in about 2 seconds flat!

HarrietsweetHarriet · 18/05/2025 02:00

OP - thanks for pointing this out (especially to those of us who are not very tech savvy).

I'm going to flag to a friend who works in a counselling capacity with victims of rape and abuse , to check whether they are aware this can happen.

This is because you can share the current WiFi password with anyone who is in your phones (trusted) contacts list. I did this yesterday when my brother visited. My iPhone aaked “share WiFi password’ I agreed. Job done

Ohj94 · 18/05/2025 20:14

Go to google account. Manage account. Devices. Log out of all that arnt the one that your currently one. Google account syncs across devices you use or have used.

NoNameMum · 18/05/2025 20:27

When I use Google on my work computer it shows the search history from my phone. I think it’s because I’m logged into Google with my Gmail account on both.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 18/05/2025 20:38

I think it’s Google and gmail. I don’t have the same situation but DH used my old Samsung for a bit and thereafter any number saved on my iPhone appears in his phone saved. His numbers that I also shared were saved and auto amended to what I had them saved as. Very strange.

This is cyber stalking and is a crime if you have not consented to this. You can contact the cyber helpline who can help you secure your devices so he can't do this. I'd do it and see how he responds. If he's not happy about it then he's likely using it to see what you're doing.
