I'm in between a rock and a hard place trying to sort a new contract but currently have three lines with one provider and I can share my generous data package with them and pay low ish contract cost for them (sim only for DS2 and a handset contract for DS1 which compared to other providers seems a lot but has a year left )
None of us have new phones but I think we all use a fair bit of data but here's the thing- my iPhone only had the data used since I got it so I don't know what I need per month and the same for boys.
I've got a great Tesco offer and have asked for my PAC code to leave but don't know what data package to get and also if I'll now need to boost their mobiles with extra data undoing the cost of the saving on my new contract
Current provider wants £67 for an iPhone 15 unless I switch to their broadband and they knock £20 off.
Painful. It's like buying a car these days !!!

So for a bit of Mumsnet and podcast on the dog walk or when driving - an hour a day of each , what do you reckon I need ?!

My best option was 125gb data. Worked out cheaper than 50gb for some reason.

My nieces are on sim only contracts at £7 a month & i share my data with them. Their usage varies. Some months very little sometimes over 20gb

bruffin · 15/05/2025 14:54

I have 50mb on O2 which i pay £10.50 a month (just gone up this month from £8.70) . The most i have used is 18mb a month.

CombatBarbie · 15/05/2025 14:56

Ok so what is your actual outlay and for what data that you can give to others?

I'm on smarty 125gb for £12, 2 dds are on 100gb for £10. But we tend to buy phones outright every 3-4yrs (Xmas presents)

Sim only £10 a month for unlimted calls and texts with 30GB data.

Rosierambles · 15/05/2025 15:17

Hmmm. I feel I'm being g ripped off. I want a new hand set to give DZ2 mine
But even his SIM only is £21 for 20GB. It's gone up a lot
DS1 is £32 for 5GB
But I can only move mine currently as theirs are still in contract

I bought my samsung flip6 direct from Samsung , part exchanged my flip 4 and have a 2 year interest free deal. Costs me £25 for the phone and as I said above £10 for 50GB, which i think is good value.

KawasakiBabe · 15/05/2025 15:34

You can phone your current provider and ask, they have the info available, all broken down by phone.

I've got 5GB for £5 per month with Lebara on SIM only and it would easily handle that and roll over data to next month. I use WiFi whenever I can.

TheDandyLion · 15/05/2025 15:41

5GB for £1.25 per month. Goes up to £2.50 when the 6 month deal ends. Lebara sim only.

Rosierambles · 15/05/2025 15:44

There's no saving in being loyal it seems. Like car insurance. I could in theory get DS new SIMs with better data now and potentially still save

Rosierambles · 15/05/2025 15:45

I'm just so very tired of the maths and the hard sell when trying to cancel as the folks on the phone can only sell what they're permitted to go to and clearly broadband is thr key to a discount but I'm in contract for another 18 months

I’m on the 50GB for £10.50/mo via O2. I like O2 as I travel to the EU a lot and they are only UK provider that doesn’t charge roaming when in the EU.

You can get eSIMS now,
I need to pop into an O2 shop and convert mine to an eSIM

minnienono · 15/05/2025 15:52

I own my phone as does dh, bought outright. We pay £10 each for giffgaff, 40gb data a month and crucially free roaming in EU (5gb limit). His phone, just bought, would be £26 a month from giffgaff over 36 months if you can’t afford upfront. We have broadband at home so data is for use out of the house

Rosierambles · 15/05/2025 15:57

I think you've all sold me on moving mine immediately and then moving theirs as soon as out of contract and they'll have to be more prudent with data in the meantime

There are probably some deals/cashback to be had with Quidco and MSE/moneysupermarket.

I think I get 10GB for £8/month with Asda mobile (Vodafone), DH and DD are with Lebara (DH and I find it useful to use different providers to improve our chances of getting a phone signal/data when out and about). He pays £5/month for 5GB and I think we pay £10/month for 30GB for DD. All of our contracts can be easily cancelled.

We also buy refurbed handsets, as we aren’t overly bothered about having the latest iPhone (try Backmarket).
If you plan to use them abroad, check data allowances or buy a local eSim.

GrandTheftWalrus · 15/05/2025 16:18

My wifi is shite so I have unlimited data on my phone. Perfect for hotspots. Can even run the firestick off it and watch whole seasons of shows without barely making a dent. Think I'm 60 a month as my bills are separate. And I have a s24.

Rosierambles · 15/05/2025 16:24

Our WiFi isn't great tbh so it falls over if too many of us stream

OP posts:
outdooryone · 15/05/2025 16:29

Unlimited data and a new Pixel phone for £14 a month at present with ID mobile here.
Prior to that, and again when my contract ends in September, I will likely end up on a sub£10 unlimited contract with someone. Both sons are currently on Plusnet £8.50 for unlimited data and calls.

Papayaa · 15/05/2025 16:30

I use giffgaff sim only, currently on £10 for 60gb and free calls and texts, I use it a lot for music and browsing when out and about and don’t tend to use it all up before the month is over

Can you get that sorted? I find old router (and badly placed) and certain suppliers are properly poor as they 'throttle' broadband when it is busy (Sky, I am looking at you). I also helped a neighbour who had fitted odd repeater wifi 'plugs' and a proper mesh system transformed it.

Move to someone like PlusNet, pay a couple of quid extra for a faster speed, and get a decent router plugged direct into the incoming cable. I can have a household full of young adults (like 5 of them last week!) all gaming and surfing before things slow a bit. On PlusNet and getting decent speed.
