What is with the hate on Bella Ramsey lately?

If you watch the Last Of Us, you will see so many people hating on Bella Ramsey.

Why?

How does watching a tv series show people hating on one of the cast? Where have you read the hate, would be useful before replying?

I wasn't aware of it. I thought she was popular. I remember her saying she was told she didn't have the right face for Hollywood but she's done well anyway

People don't like her because she isn't a traditional Hollywood beautiful. The non binary stuff probably doesn't help. I think she seems lovely, humble and is a great actor.

What's with the twisting of the meaning of the word 'hate' on MN lately?

They'll use the excuse she doesn't look like Ellie but a lot of it is because she's not "pretty" enough. Personally I don't think she's doing a great job as Ellie she's too harsh in how she portrays her and Ellie was quite soft.

My dd used to know her. She was always lovely as far as I'm aware, and very humble despite her success.

Lately? The poor buggers been getting abused for 2 years. She had to delete socials.

They hate on her because they can. Many have grown up with Ellie being a fantasy figure as she is both young and a lesbian.

Then it’s lately cos she says “I’m gonna be a dad” to the baby. People don’t like that either

The second last of us game is wildly hated by the right wing for being "woke" when they thought the first game was "theirs". In the first game you play as an older man protecting a young girl. In the second game you play as the girl, newly an adult who is gay. They hated the second game the moment it came out and often rant about it daily even 5 years later instead of just moving on to another game they like better.

This hate has bled over into the TV show. There is a lot of hate for her not being "pretty enough" as they thought game Ellie was attractive but as she's a 14 year old I find it highly disturbing that they want a child to be hotter.

Basically its all right wing culture war nonsense and should be ignored.

My son, who couldn’t care less if people are gay said the second game was pretty bad. I’ve no idea why but I said maybe they’ll make the second season of the tv show better than the game? Was the actual game sub-par because my son definitely wouldn't base his review in having to play as Ellie.

I've seen lots of horrible comments re her looks. 😞

I too have seen horrible images of her as a potato or a Buzz Lightyear face on social media - I must have clicked through a link about the TV show (which I watch and enjoy) because now my social media is flooded with it. It’s toxic and totally unlike anything else I get on my feed. I can only assume it’s because Bella Ramsay is not conventionally attractive and this makes large number (of male gamers) incensed. It only goes to prove how important it is that women who do not conform to the usual standards of beauty are represented in TV shows so their presence becomes more normalised.

She's being an insufferable 'they/them' but doesn't deserve horrible comments about her looks.

The game was excellent. Too many gamers spat the dummy over Joel's death and probably didn't complete the game. They hated playing as Abby because she killed Joel. I loved playing as Abby. She was stronger and faster than Ellie.

Its pathetic. Both games are masterpieces. People simply didn't get what the message was. They didn't see the parallels of Abby and Levs journey being like Joel and Ellies.

They just whinged about Joel dying and that was that. Personally everyone should get their arses kicked by the rat king.

The first game got 95/100 review scores. The second 93/100.

Most big games land somewhere in the 70s. Both games were exceptionally high quality. The second game challenged a lot of patriarchal ideas and many men found it difficult to recon with the themes of revenge and forgiveness the second game tackles. The game asks you to empathise with two different girls (you play as both) who are on the opposite sides of a revenge quest based on the actions of the man you play as the first game.

In the first he's portrayed as a hero despite him being a mass murderer. In the second you are shown the true cost of his actions and the fallout of his choices. Men did not like that

Because

• she's not beautiful by Hollywood standards,
• she is outspoken,
• her character is openly gay,
• she is non-binary (whatever that means),
• Her character isn't "girly princess in need of rescuing" and could kick the ass of most of the people giving her grief,
• she is a successful young women who is daring to exist.

There been a lot of attacks and insults on social media for a while but it kicked up recently based on this.

I haven’t watched season 2, and I don’t care what she looks like and she seems quite sweet in some ways, but she’s also a woman in the public eye who rejects her female body (I believe she was breast binding in the first season), calls herself they/them and has signed an open letter condemned the Supreme Court ruling that a woman is an adult human female so far as the Equality Act goes. Which is pretty anti-woman of her.

The comments on her appearance are awful. Women in the public eye are so often treated like that and it shouldn't be acceptable.

I haven't seen the show but a female character saying she's going to be a dad sounds like a ridiculous scriptwriting decision. I can only imagine it's rooted in sexism - does her character not want to be a mum because mums are all [insert tired gender stereotype here]? Is the character sexist? Regardless, the actress can't really be blamed for bad writing.

Because she's an annoying young woman who thinks she's not a woman and says things like she's going to be a dad. It's irritating and grating.

The bit about being a dad was said in humour? As Dina is pregnant and carrying the baby.

Are people stupid enough to think the words about “going to be a dad” were written by Bella? She’s playing a character, reading a script someone else has told her to read!
