If you watch the Last Of Us, you will see so many people hating on Bella Ramsey.

Why?

People don’t like her because they think she’s not pretty enough and she’s non binary. To be fair to her she doesn’t go on about being non binary and she’s has said she thinks there absolutely should be separate categories for best female or male actor. She isn’t too concerned if someone calls her she. She is just not feminine I think and because of the way the world is, thinks she musnt be female because of it and therefore has identified as non binary. She’s also autistic. She always seems really down to earth to me and I like that she looks like an everyday person who hasn’t had a million fillers and turkey teeth. I think it’s awful that people are commenting on her looks. She is a good actor imo. (I haven’t seen the last of us or played the game but I know there was uproar because people thought she wasn’t the right look for the character).

Are people stupid enough to think the words about “going to be a dad” were written by Bella? She’s playing a character, reading a script someone else has told her to read!

Ridiculous

It was also in the game.

People are weird.

The first game got 95/100 review scores. The second 93/100.

Most big games land somewhere in the 70s. Both games were exceptionally high quality. The second game challenged a lot of patriarchal ideas and many men found it difficult to recon with the themes of revenge and forgiveness the second game tackles. The game asks you to empathise with two different girls (you play as both) who are on the opposite sides of a revenge quest based on the actions of the man you play as the first game.

In the first he's portrayed as a hero despite him being a mass murderer. In the second you are shown the true cost of his actions and the fallout of his choices. Men did not like that

Oh I’ll speak to my son about that and see why he was more negative. He’s not the toxic or macho type so I’ll be quite disappointed if it’s because of anything to do with patriarchy (and really quite surprised) he’s gen z if that makes a difference?

What's with the twisting of the meaning of the word 'hate' on MN lately?

I was just wondering why everyone's hating 'on' people nowadays instead of just hating them 😳

Medusa666 · 12/05/2025 08:05

It's due to her being a terrible actor. Her portral of Ellie in TLOU S2 is shocking, her costar highlights this by being far superior to her.

Season 2 of the show is getting slated just like the second game as it's ridiculous killing off Joel like they did. I played and absolutely loved the first game but didn't bother with the second. I know the plot, it's boring and pointless. Nowhere near as captivating as the first. It's not because you play as two girls, there are many games where women are the playable character, it's just a bad game. The first is a masterpiece, the second is not; people claiming it is are wrong.

It's nothing to do with being on the left or right, it's just really bad writing, and the show is even worse.

She should have been recasted, her face is expressionless. She can't act.
Although this doesn't mean people should be as harsh as they are, it's not her fault afterall.

Jennifershuffles · 12/05/2025 08:09

Really? I think she is an absolutely amazing actor. I've never played last of use but I think she really makes both series of it. She was also excellent in this prison drama I watched a while back.
Maybe people are being cruel because they are arseholes?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 12/05/2025 08:12

We live in a patriarchy. It’s because she isn’t beautiful according to the beauty standards of our time.

The game is excellent, you can't know the game is bad writing if you haven't played it. You've missed out. Everyone should get their arses kicked by the rat king.

Joel wasn't a good man, he slaughtered a shit load of people, it was always going to come back and bite him on the backside.

As for bella, shes doing a brilliant job and doesn't deserve to be called a potato for doing her ruddy job.

The gaming community is toxic as fuck.

gamerchick · 12/05/2025 08:32

And it's going to drag on. This season only covers half the game and season 3 isn't going to start filming until the back end of 2026.

TessTickle0 · 12/05/2025 08:52

I liked her character in season one,her and Joel worked well together and their interactions where both funny and sweet.
I'm not finding that with dina so much this season, and yes I find dina much more compelling.
Ellie comes across a bit wooden but I suppose that could be meant to be grief etc?
Grew to love her character in the first, not bothered so far this time.

Because she's an annoying young woman who thinks she's not a woman and says things like she's going to be a dad. It's irritating and grating.

ETA I didn't know about the comments on her appearance, that's grim.

Edited

Who are you talking about here? Her character or her?

this was said by a fictional character not sure why it means people say derogatory things about Bella. Are people that delusional that they can't seem to make the distinction between fiction and real life

Bella says she IDs as non-binary, has reputedly bound her breasts and signed an open letter condemning the Supreme Court ruling which protects single sex spaces. (Though she also supports male and female categories for awards, though presumably she includes men in her definition of female there).

So I can see why there’s conflation between the character and her, in this instance.

Ellie in season 2 is a lot harder and angry. In season 1 she was scared and confused so leant on Joel a lot and used humour. In this season she's pissed off at the world (especially Joel who she loved) and is feeling alone so has closed up and become someone you wouldnt like or be able to rely on. She's trying to protect herself. A bit like how Joel started off in season 1. So far in this season she's a bit one dimensional. Maybe now she's with Dina, well start to see the softer side of her character again.

This season has been a bit boring so far.

I haven't played the games.

Someone earlier asked if people can't tell the difference between a character and the actor. No, lots of people can't.

TheGoddessFrigg · 12/05/2025 09:20

I think that she might be identifying as non-binary and using they/them precisely BECAUSE of the intense hatred of her on social media. How could she not be aware of it?
There were male posters on Twitter speaking about her with real hatred and vitriol. it shocked me, and I'm not a young actress in the public eye.
There are really so many men who seem to think that if a woman doesn't make their peepee hard, she doesn't deserve to exist.

QuantumPanic · 12/05/2025 09:24

Insertfootnote · 11/05/2025 16:41

She's being an insufferable 'they/them' but doesn't deserve horrible comments about her looks.

I listened to her Louis Theroux podcast episode - in her defence, she said she doesn't care what pronouns people use for her/that to her personally it's not a big deal.

I thought it was really telling that she said femininity does have some appeal to her, but only femininity in a masculine person (she used the phrase 'Harry Styles wearing a dress') - female trappings are cool when men indulge in them. She has a lot of internalised misogyny and is strikingly naive. She referred to her 50 year old male costar as 'like a big puppy'. 🤷

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 12/05/2025 09:31

Like others have said I think her character in the last of us part 2 is disliked by a lot of people for a variety of reasons. I have played the game and you are meant to dislike her at the start because she kills such an important character. You then get forced to play as her and learn her side of the story but like others I didn’t care as I loved the character she killed and hated the game for the forced character swap. The first game was brilliant and it didn’t need a sequel (in my opinion it was a cash grab). Some people hoped it would be an extension of the first with the father/ daughter relationship and after such a long wait between the first and second it was disappointing.

To hate on the actress because of this is awful though. I hoped someone warned her (or she researched) beforehand how controversial this character was.

Was it? I don't recall that and I completed it for the 3rd time only about 2 weeks ago 🤣

PestoPasto · 12/05/2025 09:41

People hate the casting too. Bella is nothing like Ellie in the game. Arguably, the actor who has just been introduced as Abbey would be a much better fit for Ellie.

Let’s not even talk about the casting of Abbey. The worst casting they could have done.

There’s absolutely no need for all the talk about her looks though. It’s all I’m seeing at the moment every time I open TikTok.

TessTickle0 · 12/05/2025 09:53

I haven't played the game but seen adverts for it.
I thought the Joel character looked like Matthew fox, admittedly I only saw a brief snippet....
What's everyone think about that? Do you think Pedro fit as Joel?

She was the original choice I think. Then the pandemic happened and she could no longer play a 14 yr old by the time filming happened.

Probably wondering if I'll still be alive by the time GTA6 comes out 😬

banivani · 12/05/2025 10:13

I haven't played the games but sat beside two people who have played through them twice (I contributed by saying helpful things like "why don't you move faster/quieter to avoid the boss zombie?). I agree with PP @gamerchick that the second game does a great job of turning the narrative of the first one upside down. You expect something to happen, but instead learn to really respect someone you thought was an enemy and realise that your hero isn't heroic in the slightest. Very smart. We'll see if tv version manages to portray this. IMO they're already on minus for casting Abby with someone who isn't tall, strong and a bit butch.

People (men?) are cruel about Bella for the reasons written above, she isn't pretty enough for them.

Pemba · 12/05/2025 10:20

Her acting is fantastic!

She doesn't deserve all the hate (mostly from creepy men who want to lust over the teenage main character, and have decided Bella is not pretty enough for their tastes.)

Poor Bella doesn't deserve all this crap.
