Costa Coffee Barista not washing hands after petting dog

I know it's been done to death but.....

Honestly! If you're desperate to stroke dogs then please wash your hands. I got a filthy look and a banging cup down after requesting a hand wash after the prolonged pet and rubbing. (I was queuing directly behind). If you allow figs then stick to scrupulous hygiene practices !

I mean they weren't trailing their hands in shit and then dunking them in your coffee were they

Doingmybest12 · 08/05/2025 12:11

It should be basic hygiene practice , sometimes I have to switch off my brain and not think about it too much in these situations.

taxguru · 08/05/2025 12:13

YANBU. I hate it when people don't apply the simplest and most basic hygiene. It's just sheer laziness.

Irrelevant. This is a vary basic tenet of food hygiene.

I'd be writing to Costa.

Buythekitkats · 08/05/2025 12:15

Yeah I'd be complaining about this, the staff need a refresh of their hygiene practises by the sound of things.

Lavender14 · 08/05/2025 12:16

I love dogs and if I'm in my house making myself coffee or whatever I'll pet my dog and then do what I'm doing. But that's my own food in my own house. If you're employed in a place where food hygiene procedure is supposed to be properly followed then yes I think you should be washing your hands after petting animals. Personally I wouldn't really care because I would also want to pet the same dog anyway, but I think it's fair enough for you to ask.

Who knows what the dog had been rolling in, before being taken to the Costa, and petted by the worker. I would not want to see that either.

Imagine having a meltdown because a person touched a dog then touched a coffee cup 🙄

YetiRosetti · 08/05/2025 12:24

I love dogs but I am always surprised how many people don’t see petting a dog as cause to wash their hands afterwards. I don’t like it but I just turn a blind eye when I’m at a friend’s and they’re cooking or whatever, but when someone is at work and preparing food and drink it’s awful that they didn’t wash their hands.

Dearg · 08/05/2025 12:28

I am with you Op, it’s grim. And I have dogs who have free run of my home.

I see cafe staff coming to give my dogs snacks & pats, then straight back to work, having had their hands close to a Labrador’s mouth.

Not acceptable .

However, what if the dog HAD been rolling in faeces?

Ha! Imagine using the word 'meltdown' in the wrong context.

I take it you know nothing about basic food hygiene for the food industry?

My large dog like to roll in fox shit, badger shit, cow pats, manure, mud, just about anything really. I do wash her when she's honking but I'm not stupid enough to think she's clean.

Why do you let your dog do that? 🤦‍♀️

Deadringer · 08/05/2025 12:38

God yes I was in a pub recently that welcomes dogs, one of the waiters was petting and fussing over a dog, then brought out our plates of food, no way was there time to wash hands in between. It's disgusting. I love our dog but she a mucky beggar as I am sure most dogs are.

Almost everything we all touch has been touched by a person before us who may not have washed their hands. Door handles, surfaces etc. if you were to go around worrying about this you would never stop washing your hands after every single thing you had touched. It's how we build and why we have an immune system. Just wash your hands a reasonable amount and live your life!

Have you met any dogs? How do you not "let" a dog be a dog? I could keep her in the garden and never let her out or walk her I guess?

Yes, I honestly wouldn't even bat an eyelid at this. Probably get more germs had they just held a baby, wiped a table or tied their shoelace. I'd be embarrassed for someone if I knew they'd write to costa about it, talk about jobsworth.

MoonOnStick · 08/05/2025 14:38

@JustMeSammy They should be washing their hands regularly, and yes - each of those scenarios would require the staff member to wash their hands again.

And no, wearing gloves doesn't change it unless they change those gloves every time they touch something not food / drink related.

Moii · 08/05/2025 17:44

Wouldn't bother me, no wonder everyone is anxious.

Doingmybest12 · 08/05/2025 17:53

I'm genuinely surprised so many people think this is ok.I won't mention the people who hold a mug/cup from the top with fingers on the lip which I also think is grim.

No but the dog might have rolled in fox poo. 😂
