MN feels so much quieter recently

By recently I mean the last month or so. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Because they’re allowing certain posters to control the narrative for reasons only known to MN. Anyone who disagrees with those people gets reported for no plausible reason and suspended or banned.

That's a unique take on it @JaneJeffer. I hadn't noticed and am curious. How do you know when people have been banned?

  • Badly managed (child abuse images, no proper moderation overnight, leaving users stewing for days on end when they ask a question, fake apologies when they fuck up etc)
  • AI/trolls/fake threads
  • Adblocker situation
  • Technical issues

This. I am on here a lot less now. I just pop in occasionally.

Does anyone actually buy anything from the ads? I just zone them out. Couldn't even tell you what they're for.

Which is why they’re pointless and annoying. Ads are supposed to encourage you to buy. These do the opposite.

I wonder if more people are having chats with Gen AIs instead? They are very good at giving holiday advice, talking through dilemmas etc ...
Probably trained on this stuff.

I post a lot less than I used to just because almost every thread I open these days looks fake to me. Either I’m wrong or fake threads are so prevalent they are everywhere. Either way it’s ruined the experience for me to a large extent. Plus - crazily - I genuinely find Reddit (!!) a more supportive place than modern day mn and less likely to descend into arguments.

I don’t post as much as posters seem to be more aggressive in their replies. Even if it’s in chat people quote you and tell you are wrong and in one case someone laughed and was scathing at my reply. I would mind if I’d said something controversial but posters can be very aggressive for absolutely no reason.
I’m also fed up of posters pouring their heart out and threads being derailed because she’s made a spelling error.
I often wonder how these posters get on with people in real life.
I’m aware my thoughts will probably get a response and yes I’ve been here for ages under different names but vipers used to be a lot less personal.

I think that's a possibility. I've certainly started using it for things like this. This week I was feeling quite low about how much work I have on and how messy the flat is getting because I'm overworked.

I decided to ask ChatGPT about it. It was amazing! It asked me to list the jobs I need to do in the house and then it said we'd do it in 10 minute chunks. It kept telling me to do things - eg. go and empty your washing machine, hang the washing up and come back when you're done. Then I'd go back and say I've done it and it would praise me and ask did I want a 10 minute break or the next 10 minute task. And within a couple of hours it had really made a difference.

This is the sort of thing that overwhelmed posters have often asked MN about in the past and they used to get gentle, helpful replies. These days they are more likely to be told they are a dirty slob and they should be ashamed of themselves and then nasty stuff like "I hope you don't have children".

Struggling with weight issues? Are people going to go on MN and ask for dietary advice? No, because they'll be told endless times they are fat, greedy and it's easy "eat less, move more". Ask ChatGPT instead and it will come up with ideas without making you feel shit about yourself.

You are not wrong.
Most of the threads in "trending" are not genuine.

I don't see any ads while using Brave.

I stay in touch with some people off of here.

Haven’t you noticed on certain topics how there is now only one point of view which is usually out of step with the rest of the internet and threads are riddled with deletions? I’ve had to stop posting about certain things because of the bullies.

JulepTulip · 03/05/2025 12:55

They’re (MN) also apparently using people’s posts to promote completely different products. That will make people less likely to post recommendations for anything.
