MN feels so much quieter recently

whatausername · 02/05/2025 12:39

By recently I mean the last month or so. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I assume it’s because the site is working so badly on various browsers that people give up

WasherWoman25 · 02/05/2025 12:43

Yes I didn’t used to be able to keep up with the active posts, new stuff every few minutes. Now each time I check in it’s the same posts there.

Flapjacker48 · 02/05/2025 13:55

It's the banning ad blockers. No one wants to use a site full of garish adverts which often slow the browser down.

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/05/2025 14:25

All th Mumsnet ads too, many of which are variations on a theme. It significantly reduces the number of posts from members.

driedgrasses · 02/05/2025 14:29

Does anyone actually buy anything from the ads? I just zone them out. Couldn't even tell you what they're for.

HansHolbein · 02/05/2025 14:29
  • Badly managed (child abuse images, no proper moderation overnight, leaving users stewing for days on end when they ask a question, fake apologies when they fuck up etc)
  • AI/trolls/fake threads
  • Adblocker situation
  • Technical issues
TheDandyLion · 02/05/2025 14:45

It feels like reading a copy of Take a Break magazine.

I was online during the CSA image mess and I definitely see a lot of troll/bot threads. When MN implemented the "pay or we sell you" model I took a break. Came back about six weeks ago but I'm not sure it's worth paying. Furthermore, there's something so disrespectful and distasteful about holding someone's privacy hostage. It's supposed to be something fun for my leisure time, alas...

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/05/2025 14:54

It's annoying, but possible, to run the site with the ad blocker in place. I just keep pressing either refresh the page or continue without turning off ad blocker. It pops up at least once every thread, but I will NOT turn off my ad blocker!

MorningSunlight · 02/05/2025 14:54

I agree, Active Threads hardly changes from day to day but then again half of the threads on the page are sponsored crap that I'm not interested in anyway.

BloodandGlitter · 02/05/2025 14:58

Sometimes active doesn't change for hours, especially when you hide all the ones you're not interested in.

Certain adblockers work really well on mumsnet. I haven't once seen the warning about using adblock and I don't see ads either.

My adblocker does say its blocked 61 items on this page though.

HansHolbein · 02/05/2025 15:00

@whatausername Don’t pay! I’ve heard there’s an app called Duck Duck Go that sorts all that ad crap out…😉

I agree with that and have done much the same, stopped initially and generally intend to reduce my use of the site massively.

SunsetCocktails · 02/05/2025 15:14

I’ve been here years and I always feel it’s quieter as the nicer weather comes along, maybe that’s just me though. I think people are out and about more living their lives and not curled up on the sofa scrolling like in winter. I think the only topic that gets much more traffic in summer in Holidays.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/05/2025 15:24

Sadly I think that’s true to a large extent these days.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 02/05/2025 15:30

I'm here a lot less because of the ad blocker ban. While I'll happily add an exception to it for sites I want to support, the state of the ads on Mumsnet, and how unusable the site becomes when they're on, means I'm not willing to.

So I'm only on here on my PC with the Brave browser installed, I don't come on on my phone any more.

Flewaway · 02/05/2025 15:33

Maybe people are out more because of the nice weather.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/05/2025 15:35

I post a lot less. I'm fed up of the fake threads. In recent weeks I've taken the trouble to report 4 of them under the "not a genuine poster" option, although I see more like 4 every single time I scroll through Active convos so could be reporting multiple times a day ... haven't heard a dickie bird back from HQ.

SoOxon · 02/05/2025 15:41

but what can we expect when clearly (to us) fake threads launch, for replies in abundance, posters taking the OP seriously, offering advice, replaying their own relevant as they see them experiences, its quite dismaying

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 02/05/2025 16:05

Social media in general is a lot quieter these days. I think people are just bored with it all.

On my local Facebook page, you have the same handful of people posting, usually complaining about parking/teenagers/dog shit, and being judgemental.

It's the same with this place. There aren't many threads that are grabbing my attention and a lot seem to get hijacked, and you often have two people arguing with each other about something not to do with the thread.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/05/2025 16:15

Yes, @SoOxon, the fake threads are always the most popular ones! They are the most click-baity. I've no idea why people don't stop to think "but did this actually happen?" I really thought we more wise to the liars and trolls and bots.

Thegirlinthegreenscarf · 02/05/2025 16:36

I don't use mn as much as I used to because it's all a bit same threads different day. I mainly use another site now.

WasherWoman25 · 02/05/2025 21:23

I’d pretty much stopped using the site until I switched to duck duck go. I no longer see any of the ads and it’s not crazy slow like on other browsers.

NoraLuka · 02/05/2025 21:30

I don’t use MN as much because there was a spate of fake/AI posts for a while and it just seemed like a waste of time reading them. I’ve almost dropped Facebook too for the same reason.

I spent too much time scrolling anyway and now do other things instead and feel better for it.

DinaofCloud9 · 02/05/2025 22:41

I think the CSA images scared a lot of people away.
