Cars - modern ones, you probably see cars you remember or currently on the roads. If in the UK, some have a number plate fully visible. Guess within 7 years of the registration plate. A few weeks ago, there was a van with the old R. Which was 1976/7. Guessed 1982 and it was 1983.
Some photos have dates on them. Also, some photos have been the outside of cinemas with a name of a film advertised.
Technology/Trends. If see a crowd at a venue with hardly any mobile phones, its earlier than you think. Also, recently, had a couple of photos of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and they were early 90s
Things like face masks, could make it easily to 2020/21. Last week, there was a photo of people walking in a street in China (I'm guessing) and we were thrown that it was 2001. As some parts of China (perhaps Japan and S Korea) wear masks for pollutions levels.
If you see a photo of a US president being inaugurated, the year is divisible by 4 plus 1. So 1981. 1977 etc. Olympic years are divisible by 4 for summer and halfway for winter.
Some of us had suffered from 'wrong war syndrome'. Some photos are better to date than others. Desert action, WW2.
Also from experience, B&W photos with poor clarity are older than you think.
