On my local FB community group people get banned for racist comments. It's all very civilised really.

PandoraSocks · 03/05/2025 11:53

Well the racists seem to be out in force on MN today. Maybe they are having a break from FB.

Hopefully it will die down soon.

I am also wondering how many volunteer jobs they can realistically do

I don't know because I only know about the asylum seekers who volunteer in the charity I also volunteer with.

I see Dutton has lost his seat and the election in Aus. Labor remain in government.
Influenced by Trump’s posturing?

BIossomtoes · 03/05/2025 12:08

Definitely the Trump effect. Hope it’s put a dent in Farage’s smugness.

I suspect the BBC will rustle up a 10 page treatise on the lingering effects of the 1967 budget.

If you paste a BBC story into a current affairs prompt sensitive GPT model. it will surmise that there has been an election in Canada, and that US squirrels had better watch out.

I don't think you need to be a serving US president to understand what's going on there.

It's a nice wishlist, wonder how she is planning to fund it all

Reform UK’s new County Councillor for Birchwood, Lincolnshire, Brenda Collier plans to ban biscuits.

I work in LA and we genuinely have days where there is no toilet paper available in our toilets. Lol @ tax payer funded free biscuits!!!! The only people who get offered biscuits are Ofsted when they inspect!

Quite! I worked for a county council in my youth and there were no free biscuits then (and I imagine more money about). I subsequently trained as a teacher - the only free food I’ve ever been given was in a private school.

Totally unconnected to current topics I enjoyed listening to this bit of analysis of role of House of Lords by Ian Dunt.

https://bsky.app/profile/robertwiblin.bsky.social/post/3loaz2drht22h

Not in a position to listen, right now but I agree and I think a lot of it is because the Lords doesn't have the popularity contest element, most of the politicians who are there and are engaged have experience and a lot members of the house are not politicians so have no party political agenda that they feel the need to follow. It gives them a lot of scope to say "don't be ridiculous" or you haven't quite thought this through".

MsJinks · 03/05/2025 13:38

Worked in public sector since early 2000s - only biscuits I ever saw were those staff brought in. She's clearly not looked through the accounts - sound bites to rouse the rabble.
Bet there's not much actual good work done, or even understanding of the work - that's not actually an individual or personal criticism of those elected, but I don't think candidates were chosen for experience/knowledge, so will obviously struggle - the Hull/East Riding mayor sounded way out of his depth and didn't really seem to understand what his role would be, when I heard him on a Hustings (posted on another thread)

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2025 13:58

It reminds me of Jenny Harries during Covid when she created this image of a bunch of teachers luxuriating around a staff coffee machine for hours on end.

FB is awful, however I noticed a local business I was going to go to liked a post about the new Reform town councillor win in the by election. Unfollowed and won't be giving them my money.

Any answers on Radio 4 was good today, especially the man from Winchester, who talked sense. His views made me think about Reform support on MN. Feel like asking do they enjoy frightening people? Seems to me that they do.

Incidentally the new Reform town councillor didn't give his address even though he lives in the area. Wonder why?

Been reading also about UKIP in Thanet when they were in control 2015. It lasted less than three years before they lost overall control to the Conservatives.

The local Nub news on FB constantly went on about the council getting dishwashers in the main offices. Of course that spouted a whole load of criticism regarding wasteful spending.

Piggywaspushed · 03/05/2025 15:00

Just seen on Indeed that Leicester City Council are advertising for a head of Diversity and Community. Poor Nigel. This must be very triggering for him.

placemats · 03/05/2025 15:28

Selflessness
Integrity
Objectivity
Accountability
Openness
Honesty
Leadership

The above are the Nolan principles of public service.

I do wonder how many Reform councillors will uphold these.

I guess it depends on where your job is? Or they think they have to give up their job?

PandoraSocks · 03/05/2025 15:59

I think a lot of them will do the bare minimum. Just like their dear leader.

DuncinToffee · 03/05/2025 16:00

'Common sense', great policy.

DuncinToffee · 03/05/2025 16:02

Well if they stop working from home, Nige will have to actually work from his constituency office rahter than mar-a-lago
