A thread for anyone home alone this Easter weekend

OpenPalm · 18/04/2025 09:34

Does anyone want to check in with activities & ideas for afar they are doing, if they find themselves alone this weekend? Feels like it will be a long few days.

I am taking it hour by hour. Will read my book in the sunshine once I get out of the bath. You?

@MananaPenelope How was the dress, any good?

ithinkicanithinkican · 19/04/2025 18:45

@semideponent Oh dear, that combo doesn’t sound too good - hope you’re doing okay.

Lulu1919 · 19/04/2025 18:49

I'm home alone tomorrow
Think I'll do some reading
Daughter bought me an Easter egg....so,will open that
Netflix....any suggestions ?

MCCN · 19/04/2025 18:49

I'm completely on my own this Easter. I went swimming this morning and forced myself out for a bit of a walk this afternoon.

Wasn't planning to do anything tomorrow, but have just seen that the weather is going to be reasonable so I've spontaneously booked a ticket for a local stately home & garden. I'm not good with too many days in a row just vegetating.

Now that Spring is here, I'm trying to take at least one photo a day of something pretty to lift my mood. I send it to one of my adult DCs.

@Taytocrisps I’m exactly the same with the gardening - takes me a while to get going, but once I’m in the zone, the next thing I know it’s 6pm and I’m exhausted, filthy and exhilarated! I’m already enjoying thinking about what to do in my new garden - I keep popping down the the village to spy on it from over the gate and see what’s coming up.

MananaPenelope · 19/04/2025 18:50

@ithinkicanithinkican , I loved it and have ordered it online in two sizes. The dress in the shop had been ripped, such a shame as it is lovely, they literally only had one in one size. I’m losing weight so will keep the smaller size if it is a bit snug.

MananaPenelope · 19/04/2025 18:52

@Lulu1919 I watched the Pembrokeshire Murders on Netflix last month (3 parts) and thought it was good. Haven’t watched anything else recently. My kids like House, I haven’t seen it but gather there are lots of series.

AuntMildred · 19/04/2025 18:53

I’m in my own this weekend and there’s a play on at the village hall. I want to go but will it be weird going by myself ? It’s a comedy. I’ve dined out solo and gone to the cinema and survived.

Life is tough right now so don’t want to feel even worse about myself. Thanks for any advice and happy Easter weekend to all on the thread!

ithinkicanithinkican · 19/04/2025 18:58

@AuntMildred It’s hard to know - I always find it depends on how I’m feeling. I’m a great advocate for being brave and doing these things on your own, but sometimes it can make me feel a bit sad to see most other people with partners, family or friends. It sort of highlights my isolation to myself, if you know what I mean. But other times I’m fine! Maybe give it a go?

Aww, that’s great! It’s brilliant when you like the look of something and then try it on and it looks fab. Enjoy!

Can i recommend watching Spiral, if anyone wants something good on telly? Its a cop series set in Paris. In subtitles. But it's good, like really good. The first few episodes are a bit dramatic and gory but if you keep watching you will get hooked.

ithinkicanithinkican · 19/04/2025 19:17

@ssd I LOVED Spiral, might need to watch it all again! Also The Bridge, my absolutely favourite Euro crime drama series.

ssd · 19/04/2025 19:20

Oh, i haven’t seen the bridge! Im usually not one for a box set or a drama, but i absolutely loved Spiral too!

Friartruckster · 19/04/2025 19:25

Pp commenting on doing things solo. I would absolutely encourage you to do anything and everything you fancy doing. Going to the cinema, theatre, gig, gallery, in fact anything. People doing stuff solo is not unusual. You would not be considered an anomaly or unusual. Truth be told, no one cares. One of the few times people not being interests or caring is an advantage.

I went to Rome solo for Christmas. Ate in a restaurant on Christmas Day. Even in family orientated Italy, no one batted an eye.

I say do it, and do it this weekend.

Friartruckster · 19/04/2025 19:26

Loving all the recommendations for tv and reading. Thanks.

Seawolves · 19/04/2025 19:47

@AuntMildred Go for it! I have found the solo things I have done have been a bigger thing in my head than they were in real life. I hope you really enjoy it.

OpenPalm · 20/04/2025 09:38

Good morning!
I don’t know how many of you are celebrating, but Happy Easter to you all. I like to think of it as a sort of rejuvenation period, and I suppose of rebirthing in a different way. 🌺🌷🐣 Thinking of you all today, and hoping you feel included in my thoughts. 💜

@OpenPalm , you are right about DC. I find it a tricky balance sometimes, being here so that I can actually see them and spend some time with them vs doing stuff in my own free time. As I’m happy to have a quiet weekend it isn’t a problem this week.

Do you enjoy cooking and could you cook when DC come? I love cooking, my Easter Sunday cook will be from Dishoom, a prawn koliwada, lamb raan, gunpowder potatoes, greens and chocolate mouse. That’ll take a few hours! I really enjoy cooking listening to an audiobook. DC1 has now asked if they can come for dinner with a couple of uni friends. I was cooking big anyway so I just won’t be freezing anything!

Thanks @MananaPenelope for mentioning lamb raan. I’m seasoning my leg of lamb now. I meant to do it earlier this morning but couldn’t rouse myself out of bed. Here’s the recipe if anyone else wants it for later. https://www.dishoom.com/journal/recipes/dishooms-lamb-raan-recipe/

Happy easter @OpenPalm and everyone who celebrates, wishes for a lovely Sunday if you do not celebrate Easter.

That's the one @JingsMahBucket 😍, although we have a change of plan here as I am feeling under the weather so it will be a plain ish roast chicken dinner instead. I'll be freezing my lamb.

I've only just noticed the masala dabba tin on their website Jings, looks like a great gift, I will add it to my gift bookmarks as I'll have forgotten about it when I need to buy someone one.

OpenPalm · 20/04/2025 12:25

Oohh @JingsMahBucketand @MananaPenelope Thanks for reminder! DC and I had our lamb from slow cooker. I had covered it with anchovies & stuffed witt rosemary, thyme, mint, garlic and balsamic. We had it with tsaziki (sp?!) and salads in flatbreads. Loads left over so I will make a version of this one today, although I’m on my own again, DC only came for dinner.

Flung open the retractable doors this morning & did some gentle gardening. Video calls with relatives and will meet a friend for a walk later. Trying to shift a headache, feeling a bit lonely.

Someone asked which podcasts. I’ve been listening to a BBC4 series of Patricia Highsmith’s The Cry of the Owl, and some other BBC podcasts: This Cultural Life and Life Changing.

Hope you are all having a lovely Sunday!

@OpenPalm Thanks for the reminder that there’s a new series of Life Changing, I really enjoyed previous series.

Hi OP
ive spent much of the day in my bed. My children are with their father for the second Easter running and I was supposed to spend the day with friends but they cancelled. it’s actually been nice not being busy for once after I got over the disappointment. Have eaten chocolate and drunk tea in bed, napped, watched YouTube and tried to read a little. Going to write my diary before they come:

ithinkicanithinkican · 20/04/2025 17:51

@Clytemnestra21 Hope you’re doing okay. It can be really hard when the kids are with the other parent on holiday days. Hopefully it’s your turn next year?

LlynTegid · 20/04/2025 17:59

Happy Easter to you all.

Went for a walk this afternoon and saw the first ducklings of the year. There must be something in the water in this particular pond, as it always out of the four local ponds has the duck family with the most ducklings. Only ten this year, last year one family had twelve.
