Nostalgic80s · 15/04/2025 20:19

Did you go to nursery/pre school age 3?

Did you start reception the September after you turned 4 (like children do now)

Have swimming lessons at school

Have a school residential trip at the end of primary.

Have a school trip to France in secondary school

Have squash and biscuits for break time

Have a little money pot for your break/lunch money

Do SATS tests at school

I know it’s a bit random but him or me please 🙏

I was born mid 80s.
i started school the term I turned 5 so as a summer baby i only had one term in reception
I don’t think I had swimming lessons - pretty sure. But my school also didn’t have hot meals as an option!
we did have a residential at end of final year of primary
We did French exchange in secondary but I think it was optional
i dont remember squash and biscuits but was possible
No snacks we could buy at primary but did have a purse at secondary.
we did sit SATS but as I was in a grammar school area 11+ was far more important (was actually 12+ but that was bucks and turned into 11+ not long after!)

Hope that helps!

Yes to all apart from juice and biscuits at break.

We only ever got food and water at lunch time.

PeachPumpkin · 15/04/2025 20:33

I went to a playgroup from the age of 2. It was just a couple of mornings a week.

I started school (I don’t think it was even called Reception) the term after I turned 5.

I had swimming lessons at school.

There were two residential trips towards the end of primary.

I didn’t have a school trip to France in secondary, but there were skiing trips available for the select few, and also exchange visits.

I don’t recall squash and biscuits for breaktime. At my primary, there was water available and morning break snack had to be fruit or vegetables. At secondary, nothing was provided and we could have what we wanted.

I don’t remember any little money pot. But then there wasn’t the option to pay for lunches at my primary school.

I did SATs for year 2, year 6 and year 9.

TheNightingalesStarling · 15/04/2025 20:35

I started school at Easter as my birthday was May.
Dinner money was in little envelopes.

mnahmnah · 15/04/2025 20:37

I started school in September 1984 and yes we had all those things, except pre-school at 3. You tended to start part-time if you were late born in the year, in the term after you turned 4, then full-time the term after. It was play school before school age.

Sirzy · 15/04/2025 20:42

I did have swimming lessons weekly at primary school and residential. No exchage program in secondary. But did go to Italy when 15 with school and I think with the drinking and fun we had with teachers who loved wine, got trips banned for a few years 😂

Yes to all for me born 81

Nostalgic80s · 15/04/2025 20:57

It’s yes to all for me. Dh didn’t do any. There wasn’t even a pool near where he went to school though.

We were born in the same year, I find it wild that his school experience was so different 🤣

We did a school trip once to… the teachers house. We all walked there then sat in her garden for a while and went inside and watched a film, before walking back to school. Can you imagine that happening now?

There was a school pond too, completely open and accessible. Children fell in a few times but they never covered it or fenced it off.

I’m 1980 and we didn’t have a nursery in my school. It opened at some point after though as I remember going into the classroom.

We started school two terms before we turned five, but were part time (either mornings or afternoons) until the term we turned five. That was a September start for me, but I remember others joining at other times.

My secondary didn’t run a trip to France, but there was a ski trip, a Spanish trip and several other UK options. I was a PGL girl.

We did not do SATs at the end of primary. We were due to do Year 9 SATS but they were cancelled the week before because of a dispute with the government at the time. I don’t actually know if they ever got underway.

I was free school dinners and in secondary we had to have a dinner lady tuck us off the list and then they’d give us a counter to swap for a certain value of food.
