Born in 83.

Did you go to nursery/pre school age 3?

Went to 'playgroup', which I remember being distinct from nurseries at the time - according to my DM, nurseries involved more formal learning, which she felt we were too young for!

Did you start reception the September after you turned 4 (like children do now)

Nope, it was the term after we turned 5 - so as a Jan baby, I had to wait until after Easter to do just one term of reception! Worked out that I started school more than a year older than my DD.

Have swimming lessons at school

They did them in year 3, but as I'd already done my 100m badge outside of school, I wasn't allowed to go and had to stay behind at school with one other child in my class 😔

Have a school residential trip at the end of primary.

Yes, but parents didn't allow me to go (were tight with money)

Have a school trip to France in secondary school

Had day trips in year 7 and 8. Were longer exchanges higher up the school, but I didn't go.

Have squash and biscuits for break time

Nope.

Have a little money pot for your break/lunch money

Not sure, but I had packed lunches.

Do SATS tests at school

I think so, but can't really remember.

x2boys · 15/04/2025 22:27

I was born in 81, my sister in 83. We both went to play school. I started school in year 1. My sister was the year below me and was in the first ever reception class. No squash and biscuits at break time. We used film pots for lunch money. And we did everything else on the list.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/04/2025 22:31

I don’t think I did year 6 sats , but can’t remember.

scalt · 15/04/2025 22:33

Born 1979.
I think I started nursery aged 4.
Swimming lessons: yes, although I couldn’t swim until I was 24!
Residential trip: yes, in year 5.
Trip to France: yes, French exchange.
Squash and biscuits: yes, they brought this in in my last year at primary. 20p for both, and we could have hot chocolate as well. There was a notice “only one drink and one biscuit, do not ask for more”, which I kept imagining to the tune of “who could ask for more” in the song When I’m sixty-four.
Dinner money pot: oh yes, it was a privilege to collect these from the classrooms, and take them to the secretary’s office.
SATS: I think these were done by stealth, not the big song and dance that goes with them now. I remember we were called to the head teacher’s office one at a time, to read sentences from an enormous black book, the first line of which was “Can a dog run fast?”

TheWibble · 15/04/2025 22:38

Yes to everything, except I didn't go to pre school/nursery. Juice and biscuits was only in reception class. And our France trip was a ski trip, which I didn't go on as I don't like skiing.

Born 1986.

Bedchairtable321 · 15/04/2025 23:00

I was actually 1979.
Went to nursery 5 afternoons aged 3.
Started reception (which was called year 1) the January after I had turned 4 as am summer born (was two intakes).
Had swimming lessons in junior school.
There was a school residential trip at the end of primary but I didn't go as my parents couldn't afford it and there was no support in those days for trips etc if you couldn't afford it you were put in the year below for the duration of the trip.
Yes there was a school trip to France in secondary school.
No squash and biscuits for break time, it was milk, I was forced to drink it even though I don't like it.
Those who had school dinner had a little money pot for lunch money.
No SATS tests at school as they came in a little later.

CarpetKnees · 15/04/2025 23:01

I was teaching then.
These are the answers for our Infant school.

Did you go to nursery/pre school age 3? Yes, we had a Nursery class. Children either attended 5 mornings or 5 afternoons. However fewer than half the local Primary schools did.

Did you start reception the September after you turned 4 (like children do now) Yes, that is what happened in our LA, but some authorities still did intakes after Christmas.

Have swimming lessons at school We did. We took our "Tops" (would now be called Yr 2) but that was quite unusual. Most did in Junior schools though. But of course, that is much easier in a City than in a rural school or even small town that doesn't have a pool.

Have a school residential trip at the end of primary. We were a separate Infant and Junior school so we obviously didn't. I don't think the Juniors did where our dc went, but I know the school my dc went to did.

Have a school trip to France in secondary school I wasn't teaching secondary but I don't think that is standard, no. I suspect if you live in the SE it would be more practical than many other parts of the Country.

Have squash and biscuits for break time You could order cartons of milk (7p a day but you had to order for the week). Children were given a cup of squash if their families didn't order the milk though there might have been some manipulating of the orders to get some milk into some of the dc . No-one had biscuits though.

Have a little money pot for your break/lunch money Not common where I taught, but I did give my dc old camera roll pots for their money, yes.

Do SATS tests at school SATS were introduced in 1991. There were Science SATS as well as maths and English. Wasted took up hours and hours of time, particularly setting up the science ones.

homeedmam · 15/04/2025 23:09

I started school aged 4.5 in September but my brother who was August born didn't start school til Easter and only did one term in Reception.

I think the year I started school was the beginning of the National Curriculum so they renamed the classes in about 1990 from Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 etc to Reception, Year 1, Year 2.

I'd previously attended playgroup and nursery, 2.5-3 hours per morning.

Can't remember if we had swimming lessons. Definitely had biscuits at break from the tuck shop but I remember milk not squash.

Did a PGL type residential in Year 5 & 6, a week each - and a day trip to France in Year 7.

I believe my year was the first to do Year 2 Sats (maybe around 1991?) and also did them in Year 6 & 9.

Corporal punishment at primary, ruler across knuckles, being made to put a bar of soap in mouth for bad language (pink Lifebouy soap, yuk) and dunces hat. Secondary "the tray" back to the wall, holding one of the "Grapnels" plastic trays (that only came in poo brown then) half full of water out at arms length for 5 minutes - good for arm muscles!!

Oh and being sent out of maths by the teacher to get a load of Izal loo paper to trace graphs!!

we didn’t have a swimming pool but we did go to the local swimming pool in year 4 I think to learn…not like my kids old primary school. They had a pool which kept breaking, we raised money to rebuild it, for them 7 years later to get taken over by an academy who then filled it in over the summer holidays, they then sent out letter that following spring term for us to contribute for a coach to take them to a local swimming pool 🤷🏼‍♀️
Have a school residential trip at the end of primary.
