SNL Aimee Lou Wood sketch

I've not seen the sketch but I have read Aimee Lou's reaction to it.
As a person with a wide gap in my front teeth I was constantly mocked and bullied as a child and teenager back in the seventies and eighties. This has had an impact on my life, although, now in my fifties I know longer give a fuck about what people think of my looks.

However, for me, this just represents the attitude that is still alive and appears to be thriving that taking the piss out of someone's appearance is acceptable, it's not funny, it's bullying.

I agree. This sort of comedy is outdated. It's not appropriate. Wood is a great role model and I'm glad she's spoken out about this.

Itsnotfunnythough · 15/04/2025 19:02

surprised people on here don't seem to be that bothered by this 😔

I completely agree, it was cruel and didn't even make sense.

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 15/04/2025 19:13

I was disappointed by Stephen Fry on the Jonathan Ross Show when he was on the sofa with ALW. The interview with her had barely begun when he turned the subject to her teeth. She came across as very relaxed about it, but it felt inappropriate, he wasn't even the host. Unless of course he'd cleared it with her beforehand, that he was going to talk about her teeth.

Chellybelle · 15/04/2025 19:14

I've not seen it but apparently they made a joke about her needing fluoride. That was obviously written by a stupid person as lack of fluoride would lead to tooth decay, not misaligned teeth. I think Aimee Lou Wood is quite sexy actually, her look suits her and makes her unique.

MidnightPatrol · 15/04/2025 19:15

its amazing how obsessed the world is with her Teeth!

Shows how rigid beauty standards are

TooFancyNancy · 15/04/2025 19:17

I haven’t watched it, but I feel very sorry for her and mocking her teeth is not in any way acceptable.

not that my opinion on someone’s teeth matters, but I actually think Shes beautiful and I genuinely like her teeth!! I think celebrities with weird too perfect veneers look strange and uncanny.

AnraithAgusCeapaireLeDoThoil · 15/04/2025 19:22

Ugh Americans and their weird superiority complex about their fecking teeth 🙄. (I am a US citizen BTW so I'm allowed to say this I feel).

She is right in what she says about that sketch.

I did not think White Lotus did her justice as an actress though. She is great, but Chelsea was pretty 2 dimensional and didn't have much of an arc or any agency. It felt as if she was only there as a prop for Rick to find happiness, which is very male centric and irritating.

But that's not the point and I love the actress.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 15/04/2025 19:29

Not seen the sketch but read her response. Good on her for calling it out. My daughter has a gap in her teeth and I love it on her and she loves it too. But I totally understand that some arseholes see it as something to ridicule so it’s great that she’s spoken out.

Unpaidviewer · 15/04/2025 19:37

I've not seen it, I watched SNL once and thought it was shite. Americans in general aren't funny.

AFrankExchangeofViews · 15/04/2025 19:37

Her teeth give her so much character. They're like Jennifer Greys nose, without them she would lose her edge, what makes her different. I love that we have some interesting character actors and not all carbon copy pretty. SNL got it wrong this time, really scraping the barrel for comedy when its about something like this.

ladeedarrrry · 15/04/2025 19:40

She’s absolutely stunning and unique. Pathetic attempt at comedy by SNL. Not that it’s that funny anyway

FridayNightFever · 15/04/2025 19:55

I had really gappy, protruding teeth when I was a kid that I was ridiculed for. They sorted themselves out in the end (the brace I had was removable and HORRIBLE so I rarely wore it 😂). I agree that this sketch sounds needlessly cruel (as any humour that targets decent people and focuses on physical characteristics is) and I applaud ALW for calling it out.

BUT my attitude towards gappy teeth was changed forever (despite my own experiences) by Jilly Cooper, who's description of Janey's gap in Riders as really sexy is now imprinted on my brain. I now think it's really alluring so, any gap-toothed women reading this, be proud of your sexy gaps!

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 15/04/2025 19:57

SNL has NEVER been funny

Oh, god, yes! It was a blantant attempt to try make her feel awkward disguised as a pretence at seeming to care. I can't stand Stephen Fry anyway but her teeth are not his story to tell. Loved that when they all stood up to sing (can't remember what it was now), she was the only one who could actually sing. I've always thought a gap looked cute.

TeenLifeMum · 15/04/2025 20:02

I think America is confused they find her attractive but she doesn’t look like their ingrained belief of pretty. But the media love to do this, especially to women. They see success and have to bring it down.

I often like SNL comedy sketches (some more than others but that’s comedy), but this wasn’t comedy, just mean.

SNL hasn't been funny in years.

Mocking her teeth wasn't laughing with her it was laughing at her.

LonelyMom123 · 15/04/2025 20:08

I think she is fabulous. She is gorgeous, a great actress and seems like a lovely person in interviews. I am sad for her that people think it is ok to make fun of her teeth, especially as she has been open about the bullying she experienced when she was at school.

Itsnotfunnythough · 15/04/2025 20:09

Sorry, @FridayNightFever , I love Jilly and the Riders books but I can never see my gap as sexy.
As I said in my OP, I no longer care about what people think of how I look but the child, teenage and younger me cared deeply and the bullying stayed with me for a long time.
There isn't a photo of me smiling with my mouth open, never will be, unless you catch me unawares, but I rarely allow photos of me.

Maybe because they've not seen it?. It's kinda hard to have a strong opinion about something you haven't actually seen.

I can’t quite express what I mean, but the way he commandeered the moment felt so patronising. Like the only possible topic in that moment could be her teeth, she wasn’t allowed to have her moment where her achievement at being in such a massive show could stand on its own.
And his attempt to liken her teeth to his crooked nose was so clumsy. Ugh.

SparklyGlitterballs · 15/04/2025 22:39

It's horrible to mock someone's looks. ALW has a unique look and is extremely pretty. Better than the ultra white Turkey teeth that most celebs sport these days.

NippyNinjaCrab · 15/04/2025 22:58

I had read the article before starting on S3 of White Lotus and found it weird that they had a scene that mentioned the characters teeth ffs! Chloe and Chelsea meet at the bar and they compliment each other, Chloes compliment is I like your teeth 👀 who says that?! That's not helped has it?

I know exactly what you mean.
