King Donald has bigly new tariffs, First Lady Elmo turns out to be ballot box poison and 'Pick Me Girl' Vance is a meanie to the EU.

(But at least the penguins on the Heard and McDonald Islands are wearing suits)

China to impose an additional 84% tariff on the US. This trade war is hotting up.

Has China ever been bullied by anyone ?

Obviously the British were able to put them in their place. But no other country has ever attained the breadth and depth of the British Empire. Certainly not the US. Who totally failed to win Vietnam.

DuncinToffee · 09/04/2025 12:33

The markets are falling further after that announcement

Grifter-In-Chief... As predicted on the previous thread.

Trump White House will put sponsor’s name on Easter Egg Roll for $200,000.
Pitch document breaking with tradition raises new concerns over administration’s links to corporate backers.

For me, sponsoring that event just provides me with a lovely list of companies who I will avoid like the plague.

The Bond market is starting to go wonky as well. Us treasury bonds are normally seen as a safe haven investment. Now there's what's described as a "fire sale"

JoshLymanSwagger · 09/04/2025 12:38

only 84%?

Bugger, I thought they'd go 1% above whatever the 🍊 plucked from the air.

Oh yeah, I spotted that.

Anyone with USD investments and a hotline to a trader has probably already skipped town.

Yup. Thing is, it was easier for the MPs to remove her.

Not entirely sure we want 🍊 to leave - think of the alternative...JDV 💀

Given that tariffs are taxes, I wonder how that whole "No taxation without representation" thing is going for Americans right now.

DuncinToffee · 09/04/2025 12:56

I saw 'No tariffs without FFS' doing the rounds on SM

Iirc, the US declared victory and left!

I'm watching King Charles speaking in the Italian Parliament, sometimes in Italian.
It's lovely to be reassured there are still some eloquent, passionate, sensible adults in the world.

Anecdotal evidence that very few Americans - taken from a group that buys things from abroad - understand how tariffs work.

A very good point that it's possible a lot of websites people order from may not show the actual price to the US consumer as the US customs duty gets slapped on.

China has issued travel advisories for visiting the US.

Influencer Mr Beast (not my cup of tea but very big with young men in America and has a net worth of $500m) has broken with Trump and essentially said that his tariff policy will ruin small businesses and lead to them going under.

Interesting that he has the same horrible thought about the prison system supplying cheap labour that I had. And like me said oh no, that would be too awful even for Tru. . . . . . .

Can we start calling these tariff announcements 'Tantrumps' now?

tobee · 09/04/2025 17:06

Look I know this is hardly a groundbreaking thought, and we've been warned about this for years, but I'm finding it harder and harder to know who to "trust" to read anymore. There’s so much information of course. But the fact that everyone seems to have extreme “one way or the other” views makes it harder because of the tendency to respond in an equally opposing extreme way. (reciprocal opinion tariffs? 😆).

So you read articles saying "this is all totally insane, crazy, and here are all the Trump voters with buyer's remorse. American's are going to be in a world of pain, Trump will be article 25ed, blood bath at the midterms etc etc". But then you wonder if nothing much will come of it. Trump and supporters will fudge it through. I don't want Americans and the world to be "in a world of pain" from this. But I want Trump to be humiliated and for US voters to learn from voting in Trump and not do it again.

I think a lot of my trust issues have stemmed from the fact that Trump, not so long ago, looked politically torpedoed, had so many law suits against him. And then suddenly that all pivoted to be a genuine asset for him.

Edited

Once you remember that the US managed to ban alcohol by an end-run around the constitution, an awful lot of things make sense.
