Are ‘adults only’ hotels becoming more common?

I am not sure if I have just not noticed this in the past, but I am amazed how many hotels are now ‘adults only’.

Theres obviously a market for it, and I can see why people might want a child-free holiday experience.

I feel like at least half of the ‘nice’ hotels I look at turn out to be adults-only.

I even stayed in one recently where I hadn’t even clicked they were adults only (it was a boutique hotel with a handful of rooms) and it was touch and go if we could stay.

Has this always been the case, or is it a newer phenomenon?

Once you are out of the baby / young child years no one wants that racket on holiday.

I guess, if there has been a rise in number, it is due to the self entitlement of so many people taking babies and small children to places that are entirely unsuitable and demanding things change to meet the needs of their children.

I saw someone going into a concert hall yesterday with a baby strapped to them.

I hope so.

Holiday last year was nigh on ruined by the noisiest kid I’ve ever known continually shrieking, shouting, squealing in the pool.

I specifically look for Adults Only hotels now - my “kids” are 25 and 22 and I’ve done my time in kid friendly hotels.

I dare say it’s because there are now more badly behaved children about, or rather, those with the sort of parents who think their children must be allowed to behave exactly as they like, no matter where they happen to be.

I only book adults only resorts. It's an absolute game changer.

Ha. I’m not sure badly behaved adults are much better than badly behaved children. We stayed at an ‘adults only’ hotel a couple of years ago and chose somewhere entirely different (apartments with a few nice families) the next year which was far more pleasant.

If you don't have kids with you why would you want to holiday with kids around. I'd never go all inclusive with kids around. They'd cough and sneeze all over it and put hands in it.

On a holiday a few years ago (just a weekend trip without the children) we got a free upgrade to the adults only section and it was a lot more pleasant.

We chose adults only on our honeymoon 15years ago!

I only book adult-only and have loads of choice, both budget and luxury. If only there were adult-only flights too 😀

Its not even about children behaving badly... more about want peace and quiet instead of running around and games.

My dc are adults and don’t holiday with me anymore. I tend to choose adult only hotels because the behaviour of children today is terrible in resorts. I had dc including one with asd and one with adhd, I know about challenging children I’m trying to say yet i would never have dreamed of letting them inconvenience others.

Adult only is over 14s in many places. My teens love it, no annoying little ones.

It's largely down to increased demand because of a rise in the number of child-free adults/households over the past 15 years or so.

Yep, and thank god! Done my time in child friendly hotels and family resorts with kiddie pools and early dining. And to be fair, that’s a more relaxed, practical way to holiday when you have small children as everything’s set up for them and everyone’s in the same boat.

But no way do I want to be surrounded by other people’s screaming, crying kids when I’m sitting by a pool now, or have high chairs and toddlers at a late dinner in a boutique hotel - it costs too bloody much and it’s my time to relax. And I have to agree that the combination of the trend for ‘gentle parenting’ and the even more popular entitled, no-fucks-given style of parenting means there seem to be a lot more badly behaved, poorly supervised kids around, which is zero fucking fun for anyone.

What hotel was it that let you stay with kids when they advertise as child free? I want to know so I can avoid it

No doubt the demand is driven by so many entitled parents allowing their babies/toddlers/children to make so much noise/run feral so it ruins the dinner/communal areas for others.

I'd never willingly go to a 'family friendly' hotel. Had too many ruined trips.

Ah I see. When searching for a holiday with my teens recently, “adults only” kept popping up and I thought it was an error. Wish I’d booked one now, even my teens are tired of little children on holiday.

If it is an upward trend, it is one I will be happy to support with my business. sometimes I just want to be someplace quiet.

We only stay at adults (over 18s only).

Absolute game changer and the entertainment is much better.

No listening to Baby Shark on loop while the Groovy Gang run around clucking like demented chickens.
