Apple/smart watch users - how many active calories a day?

Objectrelations · 29/03/2025 22:22

I'm wondering what is a reasonable, healthy goal, and what is average?

OP posts:
Ikeameatballs · 29/03/2025 22:27

I aim for an average of 350/day. I’m quite light so need to do a fair bit to burn calories

Ikeameatballs · 29/03/2025 22:37

I should add, I have fairly sedentary job.

Objectrelations · 29/03/2025 22:40

Thanks @Ikeameatballs do you manage to do that most days?

I have my active calories set at 620 at the minute. I accept whatever it suggests to me at the beginning of the week. I would say I usually hit it unless I’m having a particularly lazy day. Desk job but gym/walk the dog/play football (although am v overweight so that probably helps as well)

QuirkInTheMatrix · 29/03/2025 22:53

I hit my goal of 700 most days. Either a dog walk and a spin class. Or a dog walk and then just being generally active at work tends to do it.

Objectrelations · 30/03/2025 07:48

@QuirkInTheMatrix That’s a high daily output compared to what my watch says I world burn doing that. How long and strenuous is the walk? Also do you have an active job?

OP posts:
ClassicStripe · 30/03/2025 07:58

Mines 500. I make it about 4 times a week. My goal this month is to start completing my exercise circle every day.

The walk is an hour fairly quick pace. Maybe burns 300 calories. Some days I wfh and don’t move much but if I’m working on campus there’s a lot of walking around to different buildings. So a campus day would easily add another 200-300 calories. A spin class is about 350. An hour weight lifting about 250.

CointreauQuaint · 30/03/2025 08:35

Mines 650 (but it’s been that for years so should prob up it). I’m sat down for 11 hours a day though 😩 hit it most days.

Autumnleaves82 · 30/03/2025 08:39

Does anyone know what the equivalent of these numbers would be on a Fitbit?

Objectrelations · 30/03/2025 08:47

Gosh these goals are quite high. I walk dogs and cycle but don’t seem to burn very many maybe it is height dependent as am quite small <hopeful>
@Autumnleaves82no idea but I think active calories on an apple watch is calories above your base needed to exist!!

OP posts:
Purpleandgreenyarn · 30/03/2025 08:49

My goal on Apple Watch is 800 and I do it most days except for maybe a Sunday.
I’m a childminder and walk around 10km a day.
I occasionally do a 20min hiit but not as regularly as I should

BitOutOfPractice · 30/03/2025 08:52

I’ve set mine low because that’s not the goal that motivates me. I’m motivated by active minutes.

I’m also quite short and healthy weight/BMI and often wonder (hope?!) if that is why my daily calories used seem quite low, even though I’m very active.

Sorry to jump on your thread, but if anyone here can share their Fitbit stats, I’d be very interested in knowing what both your daily calorie burn and active mins are?

SnakesAndArrows · 30/03/2025 09:04

An hour of quick walking - probably 3.8 mph - is about 220 active calories on my Apple watch. I’m 5’2” and just under 9st.

My goal is 500 active calories which I meet/get within 20 calories of about 80% of the time. On holidays (usually hiking) I aim for 700, often exceed 800, sometimes 1000.

Step count averages 12,200; distance 9km (over the past week, month and year).

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 30/03/2025 09:10

Mine is set at 500kc a day

UpsideDownChairs · 30/03/2025 09:10

If I'm having a normal day (deskjob, long commute) I hit about 400.

If I manage to get out for a walk and do a bit of housework, or I spend all day on my feed doing 'stuff' I get to 600.

My aim is set to 600, but it's highly dependant on how busy work is whether I hit it, since if I can't leave my desk, I can't leave my desk (and standing only does so much, and I can't work while walking/pedalling - I've tried)

Melassa · 30/03/2025 09:20

Mine’s 470, which I hit most days or get within 15% of it. This is despite closing my exercise circle most days (I only have 30 mins). WFH days I get nowhere near it.

what I do find disconcerting is that even if all active calories are used up I’ve only burned 1700 odd in a day. Yesterday I did 90 minutes of exercise plus exceeded my active calories by 20% but calories burned were just over 1800. I’m not very tall and slightly built, but it still seems low, which is depressing. When I had a Fitbit the calories consumed was always higher, as were the steps.

Objectrelations · 30/03/2025 09:24

Hmm seems incredibly impacted by base activity levels/occupation rather than workouts which I guess isn’t surprising. People who WFH and/or in desk jobs are at a major disadvantage!

OP posts:
alloutofcareunits · 30/03/2025 09:37

I’m 5’2” and just over 9.5 stone, I’m 57 so expect metabolism to have slowed. My base rate is only around 1300 but I walk for at least 30 min with the dog each morning, run 4 miles at least twice a week, and I do a weights/circuits class 3 evenings. On those days I burn roughly 1800-2000 which doesn’t seem like much for all that effort!

Do you do a workout (e.g. "Outdoor walk") when you are walking the dogs? It registers way more calories if you put it as a workout than if you just do the walk and see what it picks up.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 30/03/2025 10:06

Mine is set at 500 and I always hit that and often go way over. Just looking at the last week and it ranged from 534 to 972.

I wfh, but we have a lot of stairs (tall thin house!) and I have a 40 min round trip school run once a day. The day I did 972 I was out in the evening as well.

I am reasonably overweight though and struggle to lose weight without a very strict diet - active calories don't make much difference to me at all.

Objectrelations · 30/03/2025 22:05

@noblegiraffe sometimes I record a dog walk as a workout, sometimes not. Had no idea it made a difference - that can’t be right as that means just thinking it is a special exercise burns more calories 🤣

With so much variation I’m not sure I should even be bothering to set much store by it @abnerbrownsdressinggown

Gymmum82 · 30/03/2025 22:07

Mine is set to 840 currently and I hit it 5-6 days per week. Today I hit 1215 and I haven’t recorded any workouts. It’s just from steps walking

socks1107 · 30/03/2025 22:24

Mine is set at 500 but I hit that every day and usually go to 800ish so should probably change it
