I’m planning cakes for market in a couple of weeks and am looking for some ideas of what to make. What would you buy?

I love red velvet cake with cream cheese icing even though it gives me the shits

Carrot cake also a top tier flavour.

Coffeeishot · 29/03/2025 19:15

sprigatito · 29/03/2025 19:15

Oo yeah scones. Cheese scones.

MassiveOvaryaction · 29/03/2025 19:17

Big slab of coffee & walnut cake for me please.

Or a warm cinnamon roll (puff pastry type not dough-y though).

Sunnydays25 · 29/03/2025 19:19

I'd go for traditional homemade cakes at a market eg carrot cake, lemon drizzle or brownies, or apple or rhubarb tart.

I'd be wary of cream cakes because of refrigeration.

Topbird29 · 29/03/2025 19:22

I make a great Victoria sponge. And a nice apple /cinnamon cake.
Have never been able to replicate my nan's mincemeat cake - it was so moist.
Absolute favourite would be a black forest gateaux - prob not easiest to sell though due to fresh cream.

AquaFurball · 29/03/2025 19:23

Black Forest cupcakes. Fresh cream of course but I have made them using synthetic cream by request.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 29/03/2025 19:26

Empire biscuit, gypsy cream, anything really.

StumbleInTheDebris · 29/03/2025 19:28

A coffee and walnut/pecan but with triple the amount of coffee that you normally get in weedy tasting coffee cakes!

Chocolate Guinness with cream cheese icing.

Icing needs to be same thickness as the cake Grin

Dearg · 29/03/2025 19:29

Chocolate cake with coffee icing; coffee & walnut ; courgette cake with lime cream frosting; Black Forest roulade.

dinodiva · 29/03/2025 19:29

Custard tarts or eclairs.

Whoknowsbecauseidont · 29/03/2025 19:30

Carrot cake every time.

AdaColeman · 29/03/2025 19:40

Coffee and walnut cake is my own favourite, but I think for a cake sale things like brownies, iced fairy cakes and tray bakes sell best, especially if a lot of the customers will be children.

Yummyscrummiuncious · 29/03/2025 19:42

This is brilliant, thanks for the replies so far.

Apple cake
Orange polenta cake
Lime drizzle

Jellycatspyjamas · 29/03/2025 19:43

A really good rocky road, lots of cherries and marshmallows and crumbed biscuit so the chocolate goes fudgy. I also love a good coconut slice - any tray bake really.

Jellycatspyjamas · 29/03/2025 19:44

Please not cupcakes with ridiculous icing, they never taste as good as they look.

WibbleyPie · 29/03/2025 19:47

Anything chocolatey, I'm not a fan of cakes really unless they're chocolate and I don't like cream or anything like that so chocolate cake, with chocolate icing, frosting or any chocolate style decoration is for me!

loropianalover · 29/03/2025 19:49

Battenberg and French fancy’s!

Also coffee & walnut.

jjeoreo · 29/03/2025 19:50

I love all cake bar red velvet but I get truly excited by a coffee and walnut or a light fruity fruit cake (if that makes sense). Neither I would make at home.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 29/03/2025 19:52

Empire biscuit
Wedding slice
Victoria sponge
Apple cinnamon cake
Rock cakes.

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 29/03/2025 19:53

Really good fudgy chocolate brownies
Traditional victoria sponge
Fruit scones
Lemon drizzle
Coconut cake
