How many do you have? A kitchen disaster has meant dh was clearing out and removing cupboards today. I’ve had a sort through the tea towels before they all go back in (kitchen disaster is now under control) and we have got 25 - this sounds like absolutely loads and it’s probably 30 due to some probably waiting to be washed and some in the dryer.
Have you got more? Less?
If I’m wildly hoarding tea towels I’ll happily let some go but was curious as to how many you’ve all got lurking. Possibly no one will answer as let’s face it, who’s trawling their way to their kitchens now just to count tea towels…
PS, we also have a similar number of dishcloths…

I love tea towels and definitely have way over 100. Many bought from Williams Sonoma in the states, lots of them are still new and can’t be used because my husband is messy and uses them like dishcloths so they just live in the drawers.

Have you considered a divorce?

The last time I counted I had 56 but I think I've bought more since then - I'm certainly having trouble closing the door of the tea towel cupboard!!
I love a commemerative tea towel, souvenir tea towels, ones that are just lovely. Also my grandmother in law did a big European trip in the late 1960s and bought a tea towel in every town - I have a French calender for1969 (illustrated with a different flower for each month, gorgeous!), flamenco ladies, bull fighting tea towels.
And yes, I try to use them all by regularly flipping the piles in the cupboard.

I've got 12. They get washed frequently if not daily, and there's always two out. But then there's all the ones people give us, probably another 10. They get used for dirty jobs and get kept in a separate cupboard, and disposed of more quickly, or reassigned to the garage!

VenusClapTrap · 26/03/2025 20:17

37, plus whatever’s upstairs in the drying cupboard - probably about another half a dozen. I love tea towels.

AdoraBell · 26/03/2025 20:19

About 24 in total but 6 in rotation as my kitchen drawers are too bloody small.

I need seasonal tea towels in my life!!

Yes you do Grin

HomeSense in TKMaxx is my favourite teatowel searching ground.

I have:
Red/White Striped (like CandyCane) about5-6 for Christmas
Black Cat/Pumpkin for Hallowe'en
Hare for Easter
My favourite is one with a large picture of a Rainbow Trout (just because )

Probably about 12 tea towels

LegoLandslide · 26/03/2025 20:22

I love soft, well washed cotton teatowels that are on the verge of going to holes but haven't quite. Ditto duvet covers and sheets.

I have about 20 teatowels but we only use the top 5 on heavy rotation as they are in peak drying condition.

PrettayGood · 26/03/2025 20:29

10-15, I reckon. I only buy nice ones - Sophie Allport, Emma Bridgewater and Scion Mr Fox at the moment. Sadly, as they have no role in our house, they get used as napkins and cloths for wiping surfaces, so they are constantly being washed, look awful and need replacing frequently.

TheChosenTwo · 26/03/2025 20:32

i have a teatowel update - I got home from work and dh had decluttered all of our existing tea towels which to be fair were all a bit raggedy and stained although not scorched and burnt, and replaced them with 15 brand spanking new babies! I feel as though this is what some people class as living the high life 😂

Dagnabbit ( said in Deputy Dawg voice) I now feel inspired (or obilged) to empty the teatowel box and sort through it .

Something for the weekend ToDo List !

RhubarbAndFlustered · 26/03/2025 21:17

I’ve got probably about 20 or so. One being a Paddington Bear one I had growing up and it is more holes than towel. It looks like I’m holding up a spiderweb with a Paddington picture printed on some web strands. It’s truly dead and for some reason I keep it (never been used in a very, very long time of course)

I’m odd

soupyspoon · 26/03/2025 21:19

I use mine as oven gloves as well so there are normally around 4 scattered about in the kitchen and we dont have separate hand towels so they're used for everything

And OH has a horrible habit of doing something like marrowfat peas in a glass bowl in the microwave and then picking the bowl up with the tea towel because its hot and as he pours the peas out, he gets half of them on the tea towel. Then just leaves it on the work top for me to unassumingly dry my hands with.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 26/03/2025 21:23

Comedycook · 25/03/2025 22:13

Only about 3/4. Don't use them very much at all. Don't always have one out... don't dry up as have a dishwasher and if we wash hands in the kitchen, we use kitchen roll to dry our hands

Please don't use kitchen towel for hand drying. That stuff doesn't really degrade (due to the glue, I think). So it'll be in landfill long after you're gone.

As you were.

Butteredtoast55 · 26/03/2025 21:30

Absolutely loads, all linen/smooth cotton as they're my favourites. There's also the seasonal selection and the holiday ones that we take to the seaside. I really wanted the Emma Bridgwater Easter one but it's extortionately expensive!

Theoldwoman · 26/03/2025 21:43

I have exactly 10. I am a minimalist but I go through a few different each day. It’s the right amount for me.

Have you considered a divorce?

Been married for 30 years, currently separated but sadly having to endure living in the same house for various reasons…dreaming of the day I can set my tea towels free 😂

MinkyWales · 27/03/2025 08:10

About 50, I suspect. We use about two or three a day. I inherited all my mum’s when she died, and they are finally starting to wear out.

Oh, I'm sorry to have been so flippant, given the circumstances 💕

I hope it's not too long before you and your tea towels have your freedom xx

Wouldn't be for me. I'd kill him.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 27/03/2025 09:06

We have two types of tea towel : a smooth cotton one for glasses, and a rough thick one, more absorbent, for other things. The ones in use hang on a towel rail over the radiator ( it is mounted on long curtain rail brackets so they don’t touch the rad) . They are not used much as we have a 😻 new and very capacious dishwasher, so changed weekly though more if necessary.

Some of the thick ones have been retired to the cloth basket for blotting veg etc before deep frying. So probably six or seven of each? I like retiring them when I do a minor update of the kitchen deco ( jungle just replaced with William Morris)

maw1681 · 27/03/2025 09:12

I’ve only got about 5! We have a dishwasher though so they’re not heavily used. I also have 2 hand towels that live in the kitchen because I hate tea towels for hand drying!

ShodAndShadySenators · 27/03/2025 09:14

I had to have a cull as I was struggling to fit them all in the deep kitchen drawer they live in. I think I halved the total, roughly. I do have far more than I actually need, but I do like a good pretty tea towel. I suspect I wouldn't be happy if DH bought a load of bog-standard boring ones...

(I also have around fifty mugs/cups. I do have a bit of a collecting vibe going on, I have to be ruthless now and again)

capybaraqueen · 27/03/2025 09:14

6 max, I can't stand clutter and am constantly getting rid of stuff!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 27/03/2025 09:16

@SpringIsSpringing25

you don’t need an ironing board ( I hate the ironing board , it is determined to eat my hand 🦀🐋🦅.) you can use a thick bath towel on the kitchen work surface, just as good .
