I need a good science fiction film

Love Interstellar, Star Trek (latest films), Dune.
I really need a good cinematic sci fi experience but there’s nothing on so any film recommendations will be most welcome.

Arrival is excellent. Life is a good film with Rebecca Ferguson. If you have Netflix, Bodies and 3 Body Problem are excellent sci-fi series.

Zombella · 24/03/2025 20:02

Source Code is very good and on Netflix.

I know some brilliant sci fi if you do subtitles

neleh87 · 24/03/2025 20:21

Agree with Arrival.

Also, Moon

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 24/03/2025 20:38

Alien obviously, Ripley is a hero for the ages. Its literally the perfect film. I remember seeing it when I was at university at film soc I loved the dirty space ship so much and the cat!
But my all time favourite Star Ship Troopers! Service guarantees citizenship. Do you want to know more? I just love how good looking everyone is in the Mobile Infantry.

The Day After Tomorrow - Live Die Repeat (with Tom Cruise)

fruitpastille · 24/03/2025 21:11

I was going to say Arrival. I came across it by accident and have found myself thinking about it quite a bit since watching.

Overhaul54 · 24/03/2025 21:13

Yes Source Code is great.

Older films include

The Butterfly Effect
Knowing is a fabulous sci fi - original
A bit darker: horror is Event Horizon.

Also liked Alternate Universe ( think it was that ). Wife loses her husband in one universe and brings back one from another ..not a great move. Lowish budget but well imagined

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/03/2025 21:16

Arrival definitely, but if you fancy something mind bending would you consider a TV series and the German series Dark on Netflix?

GarlicStyle · 24/03/2025 21:18

@Maitri108, yes please! I've seen everything suggested so far and always watch with subtitles.

Laiste · 24/03/2025 21:18

@Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit totally agree. My favourite film ever. I saw it when it was new when i was a bit too young for it (10 ish) and i was blown.away.

Up to that point we'd had Space 1999 and the first Star Trek series. All shiny space ships, mini skirts, captains in cross over cardigans and monsters made of bubble wrap.

Overnight we went from that to Alien in all it's horrific dark grimy glory 😃

WildishBambino · 24/03/2025 21:43

If you also want a medium-length binge I'd recommend the excellent 'Bodies' a self-contained 8-episode Netflix series. Has Stephen Graham in it - sci-fi spanning 4 different timelines. Trailer .

Annihilation.
Ex Machina.

@Speakingofdinosaurs
And there is some wicked humour in that film, Tom Cruise being a coward and Emily Blunt having to teach him how to fight. And the repeated dying.
And Brenden Gleeson is in charge of the world's armies and the director gives the world army the initials udf! Also he is still basically Mad Eye Moody. Love that film also.

Lots of suggestions here. Some I’ve seen but lots I haven’t so thanks. I don’t mind subtitles at all.
