Tablecloths - does anyone still use them?

I have a thing about tablecloths (see also tea towels).
I just counted the ones in the sideboard and there's 16, which does not include
the Christmas ones, which are upstairs in the linen cupboard.

Do you have a tablecloth on your dining table?

Yes! On it now as we’re eating dinner.

Goldiefrocks · 23/03/2025 20:32

Yes, always when I’m doing a proper meal. Not just for me and DH but when we have guests I do.

TheChosenTwo · 23/03/2025 20:33

I have 2. Rarely sit at the table as we tend to eat up at the island.
Dining table gets used at Christmas and maybe twice throughout the year.
The tablecloth comes off after we’ve eaten though and is washed so there isn’t one on the table normally. But yes we do use them.

Yes. Have a classy little number......pastel blue with white spots oilcloth on my table. I only have one cloth one I use at Christmas tho.

Freedompassed · 23/03/2025 20:34

Indoor only at Christmas. Outdoors always because I need somewhere to use my stash of beautiful ones.

Gloriousgardener11 · 23/03/2025 20:35

Yes I do.
It’s on top of a table protector as my able would get an absolute hammering if I didn’t cover it.
My clothes are all white and I have one wipable one that has a matt vinyl finish.
I like table clothes but I’d much prefer to show off my table!

upinaballoon · 23/03/2025 20:39

I use one when 'people come' for dinner. There are rather a lot in the airing cupboard.
(I couldn't resist buying a new tea-towel yesterday - of the £10 or more museum gift shop type - gotta havva bitta linen or cotton.)

Reastie · 23/03/2025 20:40

My parents always do. We do for special occasions.

CarrieMoonbeams · 23/03/2025 20:40

Yes, 3 of the wipe clean type. One each to match the curtains that we change twice a year, and one festive one that we use for the month of December.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/03/2025 20:41

I have a collection including tablecloths embroidered by my mum in the early 60s. I use them when I have guests.

PuzzleFrog · 23/03/2025 20:42

Hate hate hate tablecloths! Messy children mean constantly cleaning and stain removal. Much prefer a nice real wood table surface. Wipe clean in seconds, and accept that it will get a little scratched and dented as part of family life. Then you can always sand down and re oil!

tarheelbaby · 23/03/2025 20:44

Yes to tablecloths. I have several and rotate them. The kitchen eating table always has a Cambridge blue with white spots wipe clean one and the dining room tablecloth changes as and when, depending whether it needs to be washed or whether I've extended the table so need one of the longer ones.

shellyleppard · 23/03/2025 20:45

When we have guests and a special one for Christmas. Which I've had for about 10 years 😂😂

WonderingWanda · 23/03/2025 20:45

My mil... and always spill something on it.

NorthernLiner · 23/03/2025 20:45

We currently have the ubiquitous orla kiely large stem oil cloth one on (with another OK underneath that, which itself is on top of a table protector 🙈)
I love a crisp white one, but not practical with little ones!

Mbhhhvff · 23/03/2025 20:46

I have one that I use at Christmas and one for other special occasions, but don’t use one every day.

NominatedNameOfTheDay · 23/03/2025 20:49

Yes, a plastic gingham one to deal with all my baby’s mess! I’ll get something nicer when he’s older.

Ifailed · 23/03/2025 20:50

never owned one in 45 years of adult life.

EmpressoftheMundane · 23/03/2025 20:52

Yes! I hate plasticky ones though.

The table needs to be protected, and the heat matt would look awful without a cloth on top.

Manchesterbythesea · 23/03/2025 20:54

We have an oil cloth on the small kitchen table but we only put one on the big table at Christmas. It’s a plain red one that mil gave me years ago. I have an attachment to it now so even though I look at nice fancy ones every year I never buy them. Just fish out the red one again.

LeavesOnTrees · 23/03/2025 20:55

Yes we eat every evening at our table with a table cloth.
I don't worry at all about stains, they just go in the washing machine every week or so.
When they become too stained either my mother or my mil will buy me a new one 😁

SpringIsSpringing25 · 23/03/2025 20:58

No, I prefer to see the wood. Thinking about it, I can't actually remember the last time I saw one in a private home. (as opposed to a restaurant)

Oh yes, I can, Christmas dinner at my friends house, but she literally only has one on at Christmas

AlleyRose · 23/03/2025 21:41

I use one on Christmas Day - but only if there are so many of us I have to drag the Huge Ugly Christmas Table out of the garage. Never use one during the rest of the year.

Laiste · 23/03/2025 21:47

Yes. Every day for evening meal. Would feel weird/naked without!

7 ft rough pine table (complete with knot holes), which gets lots of use for lots of things during the day (bags chucked onto it, art stuff going on ect) so i like to throw a clean table cloth over it before we eat at it. It protects the table as well, from sauce and hot serving dishes ect. I have two cloths on rotation. Not plastic ones.

We have a posh white one for xmas.

The table's been in constant hard family use for 25 years now. It deserves a table cloth.

minnienono · 23/03/2025 21:55

Yes for a formal meal
