Has anyone got any info on Leeds Beckett uni?

Please?

DS is looking at doing business there and we've been to an applicant say and I'm a bit underwhelmed. He thinks all unis seem like they're the same and likes the idea of living in Leeds, which I understand.

Before anyone says, I am more than aware that it's his choice.

But us he really interested to hear of anyone's experience of being a student there, or of having DC who have been a student there, and if how they found it and if they'd recommend it or not. Thanks.

Thanks @Fastingandhungry it's good to know that current students are as happy as ones who have been there in the past.

My son did physio there. Got a first. It’s much like being a student in the Uni of Leeds, central halls, if the course and city are right for him I would go ahead

mustytrusty · 16/03/2025 20:41

Yes it seemed as though the two campuses were very close by one another and almost interlinked.

I went there as a mature student. Had a good experience. Degree/lecturers all great. Uni is central and easy to access to buses/trains. Lots to do in Leeds itself.

@Auburngal @PattyDukeAstin that's good to hear about Headingley. Lots of positive experiences there but the sound of it, and also where the sport is so I'm wondering if the accommodation near there might be worth a look for him.

I know this was 22 years ago, there maybe student flats built in that time.

I would stick to roads off Ash Road for student housing. It’s a 5-12 min walk to campus via the back way and same again to Otley Road, where most of the shops are plus buses into city centre by getting bus from the Arndale Centre. Plus some places down North Lane

Have a browsing session on Streetview

Thanks for this. All input is very welcome!

I live quite close to it. I know people who went there (including myself), people who work there, and current students.

My DH has professional links with the sports science department and says their facility is incredible - real cutting edge research is happening there. He loves visiting and goes on about it for about a week afterwards when he does 😆

The campus has that old school college feel about it, and is right next to a huge park so good for recreation. Always loads of students hanging out in the summer, throwing frisbees, playing football. I use the campus and park as part of my trail run in the summer.

Obviously Headingley is student central and very much beloved by students and young professionals. (And oldies like me and DH who still think we're young!)

Chariots77 · 17/03/2025 11:05

My cousin who's 29 done her degree there. Overall, she absolutely loved it

mustytrusty · 17/03/2025 11:46

I am really so glad that I asked about this as everyone seems to have real love and regard for the place. Thanks so much. I'm glad to have been wrong to be dubious about it, and I'm glad to have been put right. Thanks.

My eldest went to the University of Leeds, not Beckett but I would advise you to look ahead to the 2nd and subsequent years. He absolutely hated the squalor, druggies, violence and vagrancy on the streets. Someone (not a student) was murdered on the street where he livef in his third year house in the Hyde Park area.

Alumni · 17/03/2025 12:27

Namechanged for this. I did a master’s there 15 years ago, already had another master’s from a RG uni.

Leeds Beckett was an amazing experience for me, so much so that I chose it for my PhD. Such a supportive place, I’m still in touch with my professor, supervisor and other lecturers from LBU.

The business school is very well regarded, student satisfaction rates are generally very high. Unless it’s changed most of the business school teaching is done from the rose bowl which is in a fantastic location/facility.

MrsBrecwast · 17/03/2025 12:40

I have a son there, currently in his third year. He absolutely loves both the University and the City. He’s happy with the teaching and support from the University as well as the social side of things.
He's found getting jobs easy. Currently works for the SU and loves it. He has made some great friends and finds the people of Leeds very friendly. Had some issues with a lazy landlord in year 2 but went with a Unipol house for year three and is very happy with it.
He’s really fallen in love with Leeds is looking to stay there after graduation.

Don't let this sort of comment put you off OP. Leeds is a big city and stuff happens in big cities. But it doesn't happen in Leeds any more than in other cities. TBH my experience of living here for more than forty years, but not being a native, is that it is safer than many. There are about 5 Unis here now, plus other HE institutions so it is definitely a student city and hence a bit of a party city. Participation is not compulsory though. Its also a big financial centre, so a good place to be studying business, I would have thought.

Alumni · 17/03/2025 13:07

That's not the Leeds I know at all @1SillySossij . Are you from the 'its grim up north brigade'?

I live near Leeds, I was born in Leeds, I know it as a vibrant city with lots to offer, lots of development, both privately and commercially in and around Leeds. The Bank of England is the latest large institution to move to Leeds.

Same here, I am in Leeds on a weekly basis and its a bit rough around the edges like most cities but its really great.
I usually feel pretty safe there

I love going to visit her there, we live right on the south coast so it's a trek but it's so lovely, we take our dogs and explore the Yorkshire dales. Can't wait to go up for her graduation 😁

this is weird but did we meet on a train in November? I got off at Gatwick. I was on my way to the Caribbean. You, if it was you, had a small elderly dog.

My DH wants to Leeds Uniany moons ago and enjoyed it. Foster son has applied to Leeds Beckett for cricket course at Headingly. They have invited him to Open Day and is only Uni he applied for that have not made him an offer yet. I have heard that the cricket course has good links to clubs locally for placements. Some Halls accommodation are available on YouTube. Tbh I don't think he'll go there because he's had some great offers from other unis and I think if they are slow on admin it's never a good sign. Beckett campus is is where all sports facilities are and it's smaller than city campus. I did look at houses to rent in area looking ahead to second year.

mustytrusty · 17/03/2025 20:24

I hadn't thought of looking at accommodation on YouTube. That's a great tip. Thanks!

I went to Uni of Leeds, but my sister went to Beckett and I have a friend who works there.

Leeds is an amazing city for students - headingley is a great place to live but with lots going on and access to green space. So many of us stayed after uni. Highly recommend.

mrsnjw · 15/08/2025 18:36

@mustytrustydid you get Leeds Beckett? My son is due to start in sept.

mustytrusty · 15/08/2025 18:58

@mrsnjw yes, he's been accepted and has arranged his accommodation at Marsden. He's very excited now. Funnily enough I've been to Leeds today for a shopping day and I'm looking forward to having a reason to go more often as I've seen it through new eyes now I know he'll be going there!

@mustytrustymy son has got halls five minutes away from Marsden. Yes we are from herts so about four hours away. Looking forward to visiting.

lakecomomo · 15/08/2025 21:40

I hope your children enjoy it as much as mine did 🩵

Pedallleur · 15/08/2025 22:37

It's more specialised than the main Uni as you can tell by the courses. You go to Leeds Uni for eg medicine or languages or law. Leeds is a fun place with a big student population. Great rail and road links. Surrounding towns like Otley are lovely and you have easy access to the Dales. Can get Rover tickets to go to places on the bus/train.

Jimmy Saville and Peter Sutcliffe were from Leeds but not everyone there is into necrophilia or murder. Vibrant city with a big regeneration going on. As with all cities your vice of choice will be available.
