Has anyone got any info on Leeds Beckett uni?

Please?

DS is looking at doing business there and we've been to an applicant say and I'm a bit underwhelmed. He thinks all unis seem like they're the same and likes the idea of living in Leeds, which I understand.

Before anyone says, I am more than aware that it's his choice.

But us he really interested to hear of anyone's experience of being a student there, or of having DC who have been a student there, and if how they found it and if they'd recommend it or not. Thanks.

Well that was full of typos.

An applicant day, obviously! And I'd be really interested to hear people's experiences!!

I did a degree there about 20 years ago. Although it was part time alongside work so probably not what you’re looking for (at least it will bump the thread for you though). It was fine, relatively well organised, lecturers were good. Got a first so can’t complain. Was in a healthcare subject though, not business

Friendofdennis · 15/03/2025 17:33

Yes I know someone who studied there. Cyber security, achieved a 1st. Now has a very good job. They were very satisfied with everything

I had a friend who did a healthcare course there and spoke highly of it but his experience was a similar period of time ago. Wonder if you were classmates?!!

My husband used to lecture there and loved it, only left as we met and he wanted to move down south with me.
My daughter is currently there in her final year studying SEN, Disability and Inclusion. She's on course for a first and had very much enjoyed her time. It's a great student city and the halls were ok in first year.

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 17:40

Thanks. This is all very positive so far!

@Mumofyellows - which halls did she stay in in year 1 please?

She was in Marsden House. A few little niggles with plumbing which is fairly normal but nothing major, it was safe and she loved it.

Thanks!

I know a few people who work there and have been to some events in The Business Dept. I was actually quite impressed and their links to Industry are good. I have a friend whose son is doing Cyber Security there and he seems to like it.
Leeds is a great city as well

Shouldntbutdo · 15/03/2025 17:50

Is your DC sporty? Leeds Beckett are very good in that department. Had children at Leeds Uni. Great place to study but lots of drugs. Think Leeds is known for it.

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 17:44

Thanks!

I love going to visit her there, we live right on the south coast so it's a trek but it's so lovely, we take our dogs and explore the Yorkshire dales. Can't wait to go up for her graduation 😁

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 17:55

@Shouldntbutdo yes, very sporty and I think that's part of the draw for him.

We live a couple of hours away and visit Leeds occasionally and I always think there seems to be lots of people on the streets who are wasted. I'm not massively keen on Leeds, personally, for that reason.

But the surrounding areas are lovely.

My son studied at Leeds Beckett and had a very good experience. He was on the Headingley campus - I think business courses are in the town centre. Don't understand your attitude towards Leeds as a city but that might be because it is my home town. Anyway it's his choice not your choice.

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 18:33

@PattyDukeAstin that's exactly what I said

Got a HND at De Montfort and converted that into a BA (Hons) Business and Marketing via the top up course which I did at LBU (it was known as Leeds Met then) in a year 2002/3. I very much enjoyed it there. Wished I did the whole course at LMU. Everyone on the course went to same lectures and the seminars/tutorials had the same students in them. DMU, some of the core modules, there were 4 different lecture groups and 20 tutorial groups. You were never in the same group. First lecture or tutor group, I saw students which I never saw before. Doing group assignments was tricky at DMU as we had only one hour per week where no-one at lectures or tutorials. We were not allowed to change our timetable. LMU, we had entire mornings or afternoons to do group assignments.

Beckett Park campus, about 10 min from Headingley cricket and rugby grounds is lovely.

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 18:50

@Auburngal @PattyDukeAstin that's good to hear about Headingley. Lots of positive experiences there but the sound of it, and also where the sport is so I'm wondering if the accommodation near there might be worth a look for him.

I graduated from Leeds Beckett with a 2:1 in 2018 as a mature student (45!). I live in Harrogate so commuted daily. It was a very positive experience, the uni itself is great and there are some lovely bars nearby! Would recommend!

Therunecaster · 15/03/2025 18:55

My son is at Beckitt doing the 2nd year of his nurse training. He loves it. He stayed at Marsden House for his first year. Decent room

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 20:01

Thanks. This is all really good news. Thanks for taking the time to tell me.

My son went to Leeds Beckett and loved it.
Lived in student accommodation in the city. Really enjoyed the social life outside Uni.
He's 27 now and still lives and works in Leeds. He loves it. Doesn't ever want to live anywhere else

lakecomomo · 15/03/2025 20:40

My daughter just graduated in Business. She lived in the city, in Headingley and Hyde Park. Of the universities my children have been to it was by far the best, the course is really well organised and she felt supported. Lectures were in the Rose Bowl in the city centre.

It’s an amazing city, I don’t share your experience of it to be honest, most of her friends have chosen to stay there and are now working.

mustytrusty · 15/03/2025 20:51

@lakecomomo did your daughter have much face-to-face lecture / contact time? DS was
Puzzled by the answers given when he asked about this as he came back and said that they had 12 hours of lectures and 24 hours of seminars a year, which seems like he might have misunderstood.

It's really good to hear that so many people have enjoyed the city too. Clearly my perception isn't accurate.

Yes, she went in three days a week for a few hours each time I think. Some of it was lectures, some seminars and I think she did some group work too. She did a year in industry locally too and they helped her with that.

Fastingandhungry · 15/03/2025 21:10

My child is there now, seems ok, quite supportive, Marsden House is the party house.

Good city and made some good friends, def sporty.
