If you’ve recently ordered a new passport, how long did it take?

I had my bag stolen today with my passport in it. I was about to use it for a DBS check for a new job (I don’t have a driving license so can’t use that instead).

I’m debating whether to pay more for a fast-track replacement in either 1 day or 1 week, but I’m sure my last passport application only took about 2 days through the normal service.

Please help a stressed person out and share recent experiences.

application received on 27th of month, and put old passport in post.
Email saying old passport received on 1st
Passport application approved on 5th
Your new passport has been printed email on 6th
Arrived on 8th.

I’ve cancelled my stolen passport and have a code to enter - I wonder if that could speed things up as they don’t have to wait for the old one

Got one last week, standard online renewal using a digital photo booth and the code to upload the new photo.

6 days from application to new passport.

Scorpion84 · 15/03/2025 16:32

Less than 2 weeks

this was last autumn though.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 15/03/2025 16:33

Just done mine and DD’s. Mine took less than a week between posting the old one and receiving the new one (posted the old one on Monday, new one arrived on Friday). DD’s only took a couple of days longer.

sciaticafanatica · 15/03/2025 16:34

passport arrived 7 days later

hby9628 · 15/03/2025 16:34

Recently did DDs. Took about 2.5 weeks but they asked for us to send off her dads birth certificate….still not sure why but all sorted quite quickly.

Less than a week. I did the online application on the Saturday, put the old one in the post Monday, received the new one on the Friday.

Not the post office check thing, not fast track, just normal. I did do the photo in the booth that gives you a code though. In Feb.

crackofdoom · 15/03/2025 16:35

I renewed the kids' recently. DS1's took a couple of weeks. DS2's photo needed verifying (chosen at random I'm guessing!)- I got a friend who is a teacher to do it and she was rejected as not being a suitable person!! So then I got a friend who is a GP to do it, who was accepted. After that minor kerfuffle the new passport arrived within a few days.

I did google, but after a very stressful and upsetting day I wanted to just ask some individual humans.

I was in a similar situation in January . I had to apply for a dbs so I applied for my passport replacement as mine had expired . I cancelled my old one the same day ans I applied for my new one and they gave me a reference number .

It would’ve been less than a week but no one told me that I had to give them my reference number for the passport I had cancelled . So I received 2 emails just telling me to send my documents but to ignore the email if I had already sent them or if it wasn’t applicable . So I called the passport office on the Monday as nothing had moved on the tracker for over a week . The person on the phone couldn’t see the delay apparently and I asked her if it was the reference number and she said she didn’t know so I gave her the reference number anyway she said she would update my application .

on the Friday still no movement . So I sent an online message to them giving them the reference number and within 3 mins someone called from the passport office . That was what the hold up was !!! They were waiting for that even though no email said that and the woman on the phone didn’t either !!
She sent it to print that day and it was posted and I received it on the Tuesday . So really quickly .

I don’t understand why when they cancel your old passport it doesn’t just have a place on the system where if you apply for a new one that just updates to say yes the old one was cancelled !! All that bloody faff and it really held up my dbs checks .

We did DD’s recently, adult renewal - took a photo on phone and uploaded it. It even told me it was a good photo - sent old passport off Monday, new passport arrived Friday.

You4coffee · 15/03/2025 16:42

I sent mine off last Friday... First photo didn't pass the check. Redid on Monday. New passport arrived this morning. Very impressed with the speed.

Exactly the same three weeks ago. It took weeks and weeks last time!

lil328 · 15/03/2025 17:05

We did my daughters
It took 12 days for them to come back- had to send birth certificates, and the person I choose first (also a teacher) got rejected!

Papyrophile · 15/03/2025 17:23

I renewed mine a month ago: it took a week.

Katieweasel · 15/03/2025 17:32

4 days! Super impressed. Have been boring everyone telling them.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 15/03/2025 17:36

We renewed DS1 aged 14 in August. It took 3 weeks which we were really pleased about. We did online and it was one of the easiest things ever.

Got to say- alot of the government services are - patchy- but GovUK has been brilliant for a host of things we have done online.

Very best of luck OP.

Exactly the same. I was very surprised but put it down to being positively vetted due to DH's job. Applied on 28th January.

Snozzlemaid · 15/03/2025 17:37

Dp renewed his online last weekend. Got new one in the post 5 days later. Very impressed.

oakl79 · 15/03/2025 17:39

10 days adult renewal and that was with my photo having to be verified too

RogersOrganismicProcess · 15/03/2025 17:39

I completed the forms and sent off my old passport by recorded delivery on Monday. My new passport arrived today. I was very impressed!

Rollofrockandsand · 15/03/2025 18:08

Did my 15 year olds recently and it was about 5 days
