Weird plumber, normal or I'm overthinking?

DH & I have renovated a derelict property. The plumbers are a father/ adult son company (both qualified) majority of the work done by the father so I only met the son once before this.

DH & I now live in the house. The en-suite shower had a leak, so DH contacted the father, who runs the plumbing company. I have 2 issues I feel uneasy about.

  1. I was at home alone and the plumber son arrived at the exact time as the post man. I opened the door to both, greeted the plumber and said come in, then took delivery of the post. I assumed the plumber would be standing behind me but he wasn't. I walked through the house and found him already in our en-suite upstairs.

Yes, that was the shower that needed looking at, but I found it odd that he proceeded to walk through the house now that we are living in it, without waiting 5 secs for me.

  2. We had a Japanese toilet installed in this en-suite. The 1st time I met the son a year ago, he went into great detail pointing out the lady wash function to me. 'That is YOUR button there, the lady wash.' I said fine, yes, I can see that. He said it again, pointing out the same button to which I said I would look up the manual if needed. He said it yet again, so I said I understood and changed the subject because it feel very odd.

Fast forward to today and he was there to fix the shower. He said to me 'So, do you enjoy the Japanese toilet. Do you use it much?.' WTF!

He said its the 1st such toilet they have installed, so I don't know if its genuine curiosity, he is socially inept or being pervy and weird?

Not sure why I posted but after thoughts on what others would feel?

Weird plumber, normal or I'm overthinking?

Weird !

Trust your gut!

Sounds like he's just making awkward conversation to me. You did invite him in and he already knew where he was going, did you expect him to hang round while you spoke to the postman?

Yes. Neither of those instances sound at all odd to me. He’s not a visitor, he’s been in your house before, he knows where he’s going and doesn’t need to be ushered up the stairs. And he’s interested in how an unusual piece of equipment he/his dad installed functions. My friend has a Japanese bath in her house in a remote part of rural Clare, and her plumber has asked if he could show it to another plumber who’d been asked to install something similar.

Yeah, couldn't get fussed about any of that really.

And they are quite unusual to be fair.

Wolfpa · 11/03/2025 22:12

seems fine to me, you invited him in to do a job which he then did, it would have been more awkward if he lurked behind you waiting for instructions that he already knows.

he then asked about an unusual piece of tech that he installed.

LeavesOnTrees · 11/03/2025 22:16

He was probably trying to get feed back in case a future client asks.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 11/03/2025 22:18

Seems just like plumber questions. He's interested in asking about a toilet that's unusual.

He knew your house outlay so just went up to crack on with his job.

Wouldn't bother me.

Lokioh35 · 11/03/2025 22:19

The constant asking about you rinsing your bits is weird…come on people!
would it be okay if your 18 yr old daughter was asked the same question?

rwalker · 11/03/2025 22:21

Can’t see issue with ether

Diningtableornot · 11/03/2025 22:22

'Do you use your toilet much' seems a strange question from anyone.

ScottBakula · 11/03/2025 22:30

I think because he has been going in and out of your house for a while whilst you weren't there he carried on as normal.

Asking you about the (uncommon) toilet function I would say is normal he could of been genuinely curious or brushing up on his knowledge so he can promote/ recommend it to new clients.

No. But that wasn't today, and if I thought he was weird and inappropriate then, I wouldn't have had him back. Although that toilet does look relatively complex/unusual so possibly he was pouting out each function to you. Unless you understand Japanese?

He obviously meant the various functions.

Like in the Google pic the OP has posted.

StevieNic · 11/03/2025 22:35

I think it sounds normal, why wouldn’t he go to the bathroom? And the toilet is interesting, I’ve never even seen one.

DDivaStar · 11/03/2025 22:44

I don't see any of that as particularly odd.

I'm guessing he wanted to know if you really used the extra functions or not. I can understand the interest in an unusual item.

TequilaNights · 11/03/2025 22:45

I think your looking into it too much.

None of those things sound wierd

YourBestFriend · 11/03/2025 22:52

Overthinking, he is just doing casual conversation.

ItGhoul · 11/03/2025 22:54

Doesn’t sound that weird to me, really. He installs toilets for a living and he probably hasn’t ever fitted a Japanese loo before.

TheJinxMinx · 11/03/2025 23:00

I'd say overthinking if it was a typical toilet I'd be like wtf weird but its a fancy toilet with extra buttons I'd be curious too 😂 in saying that im a nurse i chat to people frequently about poo and get the weird looks but its been normalized to me I suspect that's happened here. I do dislike however when trades people just walk into your home and head straight to the room, I think its quite common ive had it before a plumper first time in my home took himself upstairs in search of the bathroom I found this odd but I suspect they do it without thinking most of the time.

bottlemom · 11/03/2025 23:02

He didn't have to search for the bathroom, he knew where it was as he fitted the toilet originally. As he also knew what work needed doing why on earth would he have hung about and waited for the OP., that's weirder

TENSsion · 11/03/2025 23:03

Overthinking but if you’re uncomfortable, make sure your husband only arranges times when he’s available in future.

MoonWoman69 · 11/03/2025 23:07

I think you're massively overthinking this! If you called him out to repair the leak, then he headed off to sort the job, while you dealt with the postman!
And as it's the first Japanese toilet they've fitted, then he was obviously just curious as to what you thought?!
Maybe he's not very good at conversation. Not everyone is, doesn't come as an automatic thing with the job you do!

Onabench · 11/03/2025 23:11

They all seem like normal questions from a plumber. From the face of it you're overreacting but you're the one who was there, sometimes you need to listen too your instincts

JamesGetIn · 11/03/2025 23:24

Haha I'm actually proper lolling at "lady wash" but I am a wee bit drunk.

D4isyCh4in · 11/03/2025 23:27

What would you expect his small talk to be then?
