There’s absolutely no doubt that it’s pitch rolling but it is speculation until the green paper is published. It’s entirely possible it’s deliberate exaggeration so the real proposal comes as a relief.

But that’s not speculation. That’s feeding stories.

Journalists at ITN, the BBC etc don’t speculate in that way. They might lay out best guesses or a range of scenarios but they wouldn’t go in for hair-raising ‘we’re all doomed Captain Mainwaring, doomed’ stories.

Some of the less extreme stuff in that story is probably true. But it came at the price of a condition that the bullshit was printed too. Expectation management.

Llttledrummergirl · 07/03/2025 22:48

Popov came over like an idiot. He shouldn't play poker because he twitched on every lie he told (and there were a few in that short interview).

placemats · 07/03/2025 22:52

As soon as Labour won the election they have been under attack. Some of it is justified, such as the taking away of the WFA, but most of it is baseless and simply that Labour should have sorted things out IMMEDIATELY.

It's clear to anyone with more than two brain cells that its a right wing media attack because defeat is galling.

This. I admit that I used the wrong word. My post sepsis brain does that. I think there’s another word I was trying to pull out of my brain.

But it’s ITN not the DM or express and I doubt they do complete speculation so I don’t think it was wrong to post the link. They got that from somewhere even if it turns out not to be exactly what is in the green paper and it does indicate something about how Labour manage media.

Oddly enough, if I’d posted a similar link about this and it was the Tories I don’t think it would have got the reaction it did.

Is that a comment on the ITN news story?

If it had been on ITN about the Tories I would have said the same.

If it had been in the Guardian about the Tories I would have said it’s yet more vilification by the left.

The mirror image would for the Telegraph and Labour.

You were not wrong to post the link. What is wrong is that Labour is targeting disabled people, regardless of the reasons behind that story being carried by ITN, or how accurate it will prove to be.

Rummly · 07/03/2025 23:14

I don’t think it’s ever wrong to post a link to a mainstream news provider. Views will differ on the stories, but that’s not a bad thing.

It’s up to each of us to understand where news is coming from, how, and on what (probable) terms.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/03/2025 23:15

Exactly. This is a move that Labour have been inching towards for a while. We’ve discussed it before. And I stuck up for them then saying it might be more about how you go cutting the bill.
And I agree with what a PP said about Kendall. There have been noises coming from the front bench about people with disabilities on benefits for a while.

I genuinely believe there is more to this than it just being the media briefing against Labour.

I think it’s briefing by Labour. They want to make people glad when the benefit apocalypse doesn’t happen. And there’ll be lots of nonsense from them about how the hardship for the halt and the lame has been avoided by the clever and decent choices of the government.

placemats · 07/03/2025 23:35

What I'm angry about Labour is the £22Billion investment to carbon capture, a science that can work in the long term but is excessively costly and lets energy hungry companies off the hook. To date no carbon capture centre has worked.

This.

And differing views are important.

It's why we really do need a decent opposition party and LOTO - which we don't. And that concerns me more.

Reform mps are arguing with eachother on X

Widdecombe has released a statement saying there is no Reform civil war

Jenrick claims in a rant about judges that Lady Justice above the Old Bailey is blindfolded, which she is not

Johnson is still batting for Trump

Andrew Neil has turned against Trump

Happy Saturday all

Sounds like a bit of better news there then!

Rummly · 08/03/2025 11:52

There’s a fascinating piece in the most recent Private Eye about how unhappy Charles is with Starmer.

It’s also illuminating about the government’s and the EU’s defence commitment to Ukraine. Pretty much nothing new at all, it seems.

For the first time I have some sympathy for Donald Trump. For having Boris Johnson on his side. Donald Trump in his first term actually was less bad at managing the pandemic than Boris Johnson.

Unhappy about what? The state visit?

Unhappy about what? The state visit?

Yes. Largely by the manner it was done by Starmer.

He didn't doff his cap enough?

Or did the pen leak when he signed the invite Wink

Can't say I'm too worried if Charles isn't happy. I get the impression he often isn't happy.

Rummly · 08/03/2025 12:18

Yes, it’s not a story about scandal. And Charles is a grump. But it’s an interesting insight.

PandoraSox · 08/03/2025 12:19

Do you mean the court circular in PE Rummly or a different piece? Have not read the whole thing yet.

Interesting. Not sure we can take that as proof of how unhappy Charles is with Starmer 😆

BIWI · 08/03/2025 12:27

I should imagine that any time Charles gets told what to do by Downing Street he isn’t very happy! He doesn’t like not being ‘top man’.

Notonthestairs · 08/03/2025 12:29

I was more amused to read that Johnson's column & video about the wonders of the Trump mineral deal and his assertion that Trump won't betray Ukraine or the EU had to be removed a few hours after it was posted on the 28th.
