Absentosaur · 03/10/2025 18:27

Love the one near us

Alconleigh · 03/10/2025 19:11

Last time I was in one there was a guy on a zoom call on his laptop next to me. The tables were close together and he'd deliberately sat so he was taking up part of the space at my table as well. Then i noticed he was actually drinking a starbucks! I was there 30 mins waiting for a friend and he sat there the whole time yapping on his meeting. He wasn't even a bloody customer!

lolll the only coffee worse

Are their prices that bad? I think it’s pretty good value. It’s better than places like Greggs so you’re going to pay more.

Oh come on! Their prices are ridiculous.

DramaLlamacchiato · 03/10/2025 08:05

It’s basically an overpriced Greggs.

It’s so not!

violetpink · 03/10/2025 20:11

Our Gail’s is super busy always. Can’t knock it in any way .
A bit in the spendy side but always delicious.

Ours too. Cinnamon buns are always great, the lunchtime type food has always been excellent in ours and I really like the small sized cakes - I like having one really delicious cake that isn’t huge and v calorific (for a cake!). I do agree that the coffee is not as good as other places though, but i will put up with it for the nice cakes.

Autumngirl5 · 03/10/2025 20:21

Ours is nice and I think sells quite interesting food.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 03/10/2025 20:31

We have one. It's a few doors down from a far superior and cheaper independent bakery. However Gail's is open 7.30-5 daily, whereas the better place only opens 2 days a week, so from time to time I do use it.

FeatheryFlorence · 03/10/2025 23:18

Ours opened virtually next door to a local bakery that had been there years. Local bakery has now gone out of business and closed.

DramaLlamacchiato · 03/10/2025 23:29

Last time I went I got something like a coffee, a veg/sage slice thing (totally under seasoned) and a pack of madeleines, which were no better than Bonne Maman ones, and certainly not a patch on the ones my pastry chef husband makes. It was something nuts like £16! To take away! Madness. It was across the road from my office and next to the car park which was the only reason I went. Genuinely, I think it’s worse than Greggs. The brown butter financiers - someone gave me one once and I took a bite and it went in the bin. Rank.

Last time I was in I had a sandwich and drink for about £11 which when they’re much better than most places, I don’t think it’s expensive for lunch.

What would that be in Pret? Around £8?

I prefer Pret to Gail’s for sure. Thankful where I work now has Pret but no Gail’s

No idea. I don’t use our local pret as the staff were extremely rude to a friend who asked about allergy information. I don’t think £11 is expensive for lunch and the vegan stuff is really good.

Cheersmedears123 · 03/10/2025 23:49

I’ve not heard of Gail’s. I assume it’s a new chain? Pret hasn’t even made its way to where I am so I doubt I’ll come across one for a while.

Coughs and splutters in Scottish. £11 fucking quid? That’s why they haven’t opened in Scotland then - we are not daft enough to pay those kind of ridiculous prices!
My local lovely independent coffee shop does a range of delicious sandwiches with a tea or coffee for £6 and you can sit in on their comfy sofas too.

34ransum · 04/10/2025 00:22

Coffee is average

Ive tried a few of the cakes and they're all incredibly dry

Overpriced

coxesorangepippin · 04/10/2025 02:08

There doesn't seem to be one of these in Lancashire yet thank god

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 04/10/2025 03:31

BourbonsAreOverated · 28/02/2025 10:41

Don’t get it. The bread is crap compared to a proper bakers, it’s all dry where it’s been sitting there uncovered and poked at by kids.

Not in ours it's not, it's in shelves behind the counter.

When I say 'ours' - it's a town over & parking isn't that convenient & there arel lovely independents too, so I rarely eat there, but sometimes buy something to take home.

EDIT: sorry I've just noticed the date of your post, hadn't realised f sad nine had revived a ZOMBIE thread!

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 04/10/2025 03:37

PeonyPatch · 03/10/2025 08:10

lol, absolutely not at all… the pastries and bakes are far superior to Greggs.

I think they are a little overpriced however. Coffee needs improving, as does the ambiance inside them. Wouldn’t be surprised if they struggle as a chain in this economy. I like it as a treat from time to time. Love their pecan crumb cake.

Pecan crumble cake. I wonder if they all do that? I feel a visit coming on next week!

ChickpeaCauliflowerSalad · 04/10/2025 03:44

StewkeyBlue · 03/10/2025 09:13

Can’t stand Gail’s.

The very epitome of smug gentrification, a major chain masquerading as artisan, wildly over priced, “there is a Gail’s” now a justification for inflated house prices and middle class colonisation.

They attract people who can afford £8 for a microscopic cake and mediocre coffee, and it becomes a self serving upwards spiral.

Our independent cafes and bakeries are struggling. Soon we will be completely divided: yummy mummy theme parks of Waitrose and Gail’s, and deserted high streets of charity shops and homeless people.

And I speak as a middle class fan of cake.

Edited

You won't get coffee & cake for under £8 anywhere around here. Probably just as well, it helps me not to have cake very often!

Avocado & chickpea roll you say?

At this rate I may need one you to get the fire brigade to come & get me out of there!
