Magnesium for sleep

Glitterboobz · 27/02/2025 18:32

I'm early 40s, my sleep has been rubbish since I had my kids over a decade ago. I wake a couple of times every night.

I've read on various threads that magnesium could help but I've no clue where to start.
How much should I take?
In tablet form?
In the evening?

Any help or advice would be so appreciated.

The spray! A friend gave me some at the weekend and it's a minor miracle. Itchy at first, though.

TheMorels · 27/02/2025 20:25

Magnesium glycinate is the one supplement I stick to and buy on repeat. I think it’s a sleep aid, and I also think it helps my bowels.

NippyNinjaCrab · 27/02/2025 20:25

I take magnesium tablets but I have heard that a magnesium spray on the soles of your feet before bed is fab.

I have just started taking Magnesium and zinc in the hope that my legs stop aching so much after exercise.

I have got Magnesium spray but I'm not getting on with it very well as it makes me so itchy

Glitterboobz · 27/02/2025 20:34

Thanks so much everyone! This is really really helpful. I'm actually optimistic that I might get back to good quality sleep!

I have magnesium glycinate tables on subscribe and save from Amazon, they've been an absolute game changer.

I had years of horrendous sleep. I could fall asleep quickly but without fail would wake after a few hours and be awake for most of the night, usually falling into a doze about an hour before my alarm. I tried these after reading a thread here and they made a difference after about 3 weeks, I would still wake up but only briefly and could fall back asleep, even broken sleep felt like a life saver. They've definitely helped reset my sleep and the knock on effect on my life in general has been massive.

I have a tryptophan and a magnesium tablet an hour before bed. It gives me that little sleepy edge I need, as I have terrible insomnia.

If an insomniac recommends something, it works!

Where do you get these from please...asking for a desperate friend!!

TheMousePipes · 27/02/2025 20:38

We all use the magnesium oil spray in this house - it’s a game changer.

stayathomer · 27/02/2025 20:41

Want to try magnesium, a warning though- if you have any form of heart issues don’t take it- friend was told to come off it by doctors

CharlotteCChapel · 27/02/2025 20:42

I came on here to remind you that you can overdose on magnesium so check your doses.

ssd · 27/02/2025 21:17

I take 2 tablets of magnesium a day =375mg, from vitabiotics

I also take a multivitamin, can't remember where from

What spray do you use and what do you do with it, also do you have teenagers who use it?

Pickingmyselfup · 27/02/2025 21:31

I've got tablets from The Nutrition Geeks but I can't say I've noticed much difference. I take mine just before bed but I'm not sleeping better/getting to sleep quicker I don't think.

I take a lot of supplements though, collagen, multi vitamin, zinc, vitamin d and I still look and feel exhausted.

TheMousePipes · 27/02/2025 21:35

@ssd Spray it on lower legs before bed (good for restless legs too) and yes, teen dd uses it. We both have EDS and struggle with disrupted sleep. We use the New Leaf magnesium oil spray.

marshmallowmix · 27/02/2025 21:36

I am desperate and suffering dreadful insomnia …where do you get the tryptophan @TheWhiteUmbrella ?

I have itched with the Better You spray in the past. How long does it take for the itchiness to go?

Happy4free · 27/02/2025 22:07

I use magnesium glycinate from Nutri Advanced online, I take 2 tablets when I get into bed most nights. It's an absolute game changer for me, drift off much easier and quality of sleep is so improved. If I wake up I just roll over back to sleep.

Not all types of magnesium help to aid sleep it's more specifically the glycinate or biglycinate version so make sure you read up on the different types before you try.

I've noticed a huge improvement in my mood because of a consistently better sleep.

TheWhiteUmbrella · 27/02/2025 22:18

@marshmallowmix @neilyoungismyhero

L-Tryptophan 220mg with... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CY9SRVM7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

These are the ones I use

Devianinc · 27/02/2025 22:23

I take one advil pm a night. Works great for me and you can cut it in half to start if you want to and I have no lasting effects from it

I bought these and find they help me but my dh found they didn't help him sleep and thinks they really upset his stomach.
I can't swallow them as capsules so empty the contents into some orange juice and mix very well. I use a tiny whisk I think that either came in a cracker or was with a hot chocolate set and mix in a small amount of juice and then add more.
My issue with (not) sleeping is if I get woken for any reason, I find it really difficult to get back to sleep.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/02/2025 22:46

I use magnesium in a lotion - Feather and Down sleep butter, which contains lavender, camomile and magnesium. I tried using the tablets, but they upset my stomach, and didn’t really work for me, but this sleep butter works really well.

ParsnipPuree · 27/02/2025 22:50

Yes Magnesium Glycerate tablets are best for sleep.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 27/02/2025 22:55

I use magnesium butter that you rub on your feet half an hour before bed. It's made by Sweet Bee Organics. It smells delicious. I find it gives me a blissful night's sleep, as Iong as I'm not fretting about anything - if something is playing on my mind then nothing will help!

bombastix · 27/02/2025 22:57

It's great. You can get fizzy magnesium tabs which dissolve in water. I have one of those in a glass of water before bed. Recommended.

GuestSpeakers · 27/02/2025 23:04

I use the spray. I initially got it for when I have restless legs and put it on the soles of my feet and my calves which helped. Then I realised I slept better the nights I used it and decided to use it every night. I use this one mgsport.uk/products/mgsport-high-absorption-pure-magnesium-oil-spray-8-5-fl-oz I can't remember where I got it from, it was a random one I picked up rather than something I researched heavily.
