Magnesium for sleep

Glitterboobz · 27/02/2025 18:32

I'm early 40s, my sleep has been rubbish since I had my kids over a decade ago. I wake a couple of times every night.

I've read on various threads that magnesium could help but I've no clue where to start.
How much should I take?
In tablet form?
In the evening?

Any help or advice would be so appreciated.

Another tip I have for people struggling with their sleep is to play grey noise (preferably on a speaker) a little before bed and while you're trying to sleep. I don't know how, but it helps quiet brain chatter.

I bought 50 magnesium stickers on temu for £1.50. You stick them to the inside of your nightie so that it touches your chest.I have definitely slept a lot better since I started using them.

One type of magnesium doesn't work for everything. There is different types..so make sure you get the right one..

Types of magnesium

Magnesium citrate: Good for digestive support

Magnesium glycinate: Good for relaxation and stress relief

Magnesium malate: Well absorbed in the digestive tract

Magnesium taurate: Good for heart health

Magnesium threonate: Made by combining magnesium with threonate, a metabolite of vitamin C

Magnesium bisglycinate: Well-tolerated and highly absorbable

Not all Magnesium is the same. It comes in many forms, but the only three that matter for our health are: Citrate, Glycinate and Malate. Research has shown that these are the most easily absorbed forms of Magnesium, which results in bigger and more obvious improvements.

Citrate: This type is a gentle form of Magnesium that helps loosen the intestines, thereby relieving symptoms such as constipation, uneasy gut and cramps.

Glycinate: This form is responsible for reducing anxiety and stress, promoting healthier bones and regulating blood sugar levels. This helps to reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes and other chronic conditions.

Malate: This helps your body absorb more Magnesium, which means less of it goes to waste and you can more readily absorb other forms of Magnesium. In addition, it helps reduce migraine frequency and impact, while also contributing to easier bowel movements.

Most Magnesium supplements contain only 1 or 2 types of Magnesium, but these are low quality products.

I take napiers sea-pure magnesium. I just take one capsule an hour before bed.

@NeedToAskPlease You have bought magnesium oxide tablets which are bulked out with a lot of fillers. This is one of the low quality products that @Moier mentioned at the end of the post. H&B would not be my go to place for quality products.
If I was you I would return them and get Magnesium Malate for your stated use.
Obviously this is just my opinion and others may offer alternative advice

I take 2 Nutrition Geeks tablets at 4pm. If I take them at bed time they keep me awake but DH has no problems there. If I take them in the morning, I’m sleepy by tea time.

B1indEye · 01/03/2025 11:32

I was sceptical about magnesium but after reading a previous thread asking the same question I got tablets from a local health store and the impact was instant.

Now I very rarely wake up in the night but if I do it's also easier to get back to sleep

Many thanks. Where would you recommend to get them from?

@NeedToAskPlease I’m on strong bones/osteopenia/osteoporosis groups and that was my main want for taking magnesium (and Vit D with K2). Having read through and researching using their posts, I decided to get the below products. I was looking for quality. I ordered what a lot of others were taking and I’m sure other brands will be just as good as long as you check the ingredients. I didn’t want unnecessary bulking products added.
Malate should be taken mid morning ish and is energising, Glycinate is relaxing and should be taken later in the day. So both have different uses. I got mine off Amazon.
I was getting a lot of muscle cramps in bed at night and since taking these, the cramps have almost disappeared. My sleep is so much better too. I find that my mouth can get quite dry at night so make sure I take water up with me. Magnesium can also upset your stomach so it was suggested that you start off with one tablet and if you can tolerate it then increase the dose.
Again, this is just my personal view.

Thankyou 😊

Glitterboobz · 06/03/2025 17:40

Thanks everyone. I ordered Magnesium Glycinate.

Any idea how long they take to work and make a difference to sleep quality?

I was taking mag gycinate in soluble powder form but had to stop because of nightmares. It’s a common side effect.
Makes a difference straight away though and definitely works, just couldn’t cope with the terrors.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/03/2025 18:56

I use Epsom salts (magnesium) in my bath most evenings, I use a magnesium spray after my bath and I have a face cream (not magnesium) which is meant to promote sleep. My magnesium levels are low anyway due to cancer related side effects, so I also have a magnesium supplement prescribed for me. Before that was prescribed I just went for the highest dose of magnesium capsules available from Holland and Barrett.

One very important thing to help with sleep though is not to go on your phone or laptop for at least an hour before trying to sleep. Same for the television I think.

Happy4free · 06/03/2025 21:04

I took them every night to start with, by night 5 I started to notice small improvements, by 2 weeks I think they had really kicked in!
Sometimes my dreams are.... more vivid, a little wierd but not all the time. And for me the positives definitely outweighed that. But obviously everyone is different.
Let us know what you think of them!

Glitterboobz · 12/03/2025 07:43

I've been taking these for five days.

First two days I had the most amazing sleep and thought I'd found the miracle cure!
But the last three nights I've been waking up constantly again.
I might try taking two?

I take 200mg, each tablet is 100mg,it says can take up to 6 on mine but that seems huge to me.
Also I order from Nutri Advanced and have used them for 18 months with good effect if that helps.
I the beginning I took 200 mg every night for several weeks to build up my levels.
