I realised just today... I don't unless they're visibly dirty, because I managed to drop sauce in one today.... Blush

Never!

SofaSpuds · 21/02/2025 17:49

Never 😳
I think I washed one once that had something grimy in it, and it lost its shape after that.

But I bet lots of MN do 😄

WompWompBoom · 21/02/2025 17:49

Until I spotted this, I'd never even considered it. And now I've considered it, I definitely still won't. 😬

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/02/2025 17:51

It hasn't happened yet.

Deljay · 21/02/2025 17:51

I have never washed a shopping bag and I can't see that I ever will.

mynameiscalypso · 21/02/2025 17:53

I seem to have collected hundreds of the things so it would never occur to me to wash one.

Snorlaxo · 21/02/2025 17:54

Only when it looks grubby or something leaks

cramptramp · 21/02/2025 17:55

Never. But waiting for the clean freaks who say they wash and disinfect theirs every day, even if they haven't used it.

Songbird54321 · 21/02/2025 17:56

Never. If something spilled in it I'd probably just throw it out

MrsPernicious · 21/02/2025 17:56

I washed one last week, it had had an argument with a cup of coffee.

Generally not very often.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 21/02/2025 17:57

Never, if it gets mucky, I chuck it

Davros · 21/02/2025 17:57

I have washed some of them, not often, but they do lose shape.

zaxxon · 21/02/2025 17:58

I've had to wash some old fabric ones a few times, and they shrank so much! Irritating.

CurlewKate · 21/02/2025 17:58

I wash them after every use-it's just basic hygiene.....can't believe everyone else doesn't! Separate wash of course-would never dream of putting them in with the normal wash!🤢

Ilovelurchers · 21/02/2025 17:59

I have occasionally tried this if it was one I liked and it got really stained for some reason - but it always ruined the bag......

Really? Even if you've just used them to carry a clean jumper or something??

I have washed a few in the past but, as others mentioned, they shrink or go out of shape. Once they get a bit grubby I use them for non food shopping such as dog food /treats or (perhaps ironically) household cleaning items. After that I use them for holding the cans and bottles for recycling. I have a few that are manky now tho and it feels wasteful to chuck so I might try and wash them anyway.

Chemenger · 21/02/2025 18:15

We mostly use ikea nylon ones that we’ve had for probably a decade. They’ve never been washed but I would wash them if something got spilled on them, I suppose.

janeandmarysmum · 21/02/2025 18:17

I washed a couple yesterday. Cold wash but I think they've shrunk.

Topseyt123 · 21/02/2025 18:17

Simple answer - never.

HardcoreLadyType · 21/02/2025 18:21

Any time I have ever washed a calico tote it has shrunk. This is not because of hot water because I usually wash in cold water (except tea towels, towels, sheets, etc.)
I do have some synthetic ones and wash them from time to time. 3 or 4 times a year, maybe?

WarmthAndDepth · 21/02/2025 18:22

Never.

Mine shrank and I decided “never more”
