How often do you wash canvas shopping bags?

I realised just today... I don't unless they're visibly dirty, because I managed to drop sauce in one today.... Blush

If something leaks or it's dirty.

We seem to have a breeding factory at home, especially since DD did university open days and events at school.

I have a stack which live in the car for normal shopping when we don't take the big bags with us. They get washed when I think of it or I see some stains on them.

I also have a stack at home I use when I go clothes shopping. These are clean (but not ironed) and are put back when I return home.

Only if something is split on it, which is rarely. I don't have meat in them anyway.

I do have a canvas gym tote and tbh it has been looking a bit dull. I will give it a cold wash to pep it up again.

Never :)

BobnLen · 21/02/2025 18:44

I washed one once and it shrunk

poonarmme · 21/02/2025 18:58

I always wash my canvas bags. And I hoover my cutlery drawer and shower tray. I have too much time on my hands lol

Have you considered fishing, line dancing or making ships in bottles as an alternative way to fill up the time?

ODFOx · 21/02/2025 19:08

If I use it for potatoes or pot plants.

suburburban · 21/02/2025 19:14

I have washed some of the fold up bags by hand like those fold up shoppers

I find the canvas ones go into holes

You hoover a shower tray? What are you getting in your shower tray that it needs vacuuming out?

I wash them after every use-it's just basic hygiene.....can't believe everyone else doesn't! Separate wash of course-would never dream of putting them in with the normal wash!🤢

WTF? Your washing machine must be constantly running if you wish this type of thing with everything use!

I have only washed a few due to a leak or something and as others have said they completely lose their shape and feel "weaker". I don't think they are designed to be washed.

Middlemarch123 · 21/02/2025 19:46

At least five times a day, doesn’t everyone? Then I spray it with Zoflora…

CrushingOnRubies · 21/02/2025 19:48

Never

If it starts getting grubby / dirty it gets demoted.

So it goes from carrying food to carrying shoes or something

Onlyvisiting · 21/02/2025 19:53

Whenever they look grubby or if something leaks. Especially if used for raw meat packs.

LimeLime · 21/02/2025 20:39

It hadn't occurred to me that people wouldn't wash them now and again. Some wash well and then there are those ones which go all wrinkly and shrink although giving those an iron pulls them back into shape more or less.

poonarmme · 21/02/2025 20:45

@HopingForSomeSunshineSoon I kid you not. I hoover up fluff and hair mostly

poonarmme · 21/02/2025 20:46

I also hoover my microwave sometimes too for the crumbs

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 21/02/2025 20:54

The ones Im fond of (nice designs etc) I try to not get dirty/wet so that they wont need washing or be spoiled as washing always ruins them. The ones with designs Im not fussed on Ill happily wash if necessary (ie almost never)
Actually...... hoovering a kitchen drawer is a good idea - its the only way to truly get out all those little bits that end up in the corners. Rarely have I ever done so though!

HousedInMySoul · 21/02/2025 21:18

Washing them has never crossed my mind tbh. I wash my fabric handbags (occasionally), though

CatteryCatss · 21/02/2025 21:29

I’ll wash mine occasionally, when they’re looking grubby. I have a white Ocado one, which I tipped sauce onto the other day. I decided to wash them all on a cold wash, including my bags for life.

I’m surprised how well they wash actually!

katepilar · 21/02/2025 21:56

I was them once in a while, perhaps 2-3 times a year. But I dont use them that often, most of my shopping goes in my bacpack.

HomeworkMonitor · 21/02/2025 22:00

Looked at the thread title in horror. Never, I recycle older grubbier ones to the charity shops with my donations inside. I love a new reusable bag. Also, I now prefer the smaller size ones because the big ones get very heavy when full of stuff, and I'd rather move six lighter ones from the car to the front door than three bloody heavy ones and strain something. Sad to admit, I have 'favourite' bags too

tuvamoodyson · 22/02/2025 07:55

Whenever they look grubby…they’ve never shrunk.
