I assume the Romanian case will collapse actually.

I could understand it, if the Tate's were US citizens, so to me, this has all the hallmarks of Musk interfering, who was very critical of the UK and Starmer, yet here we are, witnessing a love in between Trump and KS, with none of the criticisms Musk directed at us all.

But like most "love at first sight" romances, will it last!!

They're American aren't they? AT was born in DC.

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2025 08:33

The Tates have dual citizenship.

I dont think the Tates will be extradited under Trump. We might need to wait for the next administration. Whilst that is frustrating I think we can sit it out

In the meantime lets hope Bedfordshire police are properly funded and are ready for them.

bombastix · 28/02/2025 08:34

The Americans never extradite their citizens but demand that of us. Tate is home and dry.

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2025 08:39

A different take

Well there are complaints from some on the left and a lot of disappointment for those on the right.

Yesterdays meeting was just one step. Trump isn't a reliable ally.
But as an opening gambit it was a good start.

Trump owning land/businesses in the UK might turn out to be quite useful to us.

I didn't know that but explains a lot, done deal then, they'll never be on trial.

bombastix · 28/02/2025 08:59

Trump is definitely not reliable. I mean he will cut you dead if you are not of use to him. All this nice sentiment has to be matched with things that he wants.

I agree re: Musk. He and the Tates would be sad little incels together if they didn't have money, and so I think Musk sees them as part of his tribe.

I am pretty sure KS despises Trump, but he has to play the game and has played it well so far.

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2025 09:45

Zelenskyy is meeting Trump today, hopefully the Macron-Starmer coordination will have worked

Starmer is already back in Downing Street and off to a summit with European leaders on Sunday

Right wing disappointment that Starmer didn't fall flat on his face is pretty obvious this morning.
Or some people dont have a practical thought in their head.

They are in the minority this time

If both sides are griping, then it's pretty much a success. The best that could be expected, certainly.

Absolutely genius move to (appear to act) act as a messenger boy between HRH and Hiss Royal Trumpness. I can imagine the aide on brain cell duty telling POTUS that this has never happened before, and Trumps ego swallowing small planetary systems as it puffed up.

If you can play the most powerful man in the world with some cosplay and a piece of paper, then why have a nuclear weapons program ?

At least we weren't treated to the spectacle of Nigel Farage bobbing up and down in the background as if he's waiting to be excused for a wee.

In fact, the beer-swilling fag-puffing one seems to be missing in action.

bombastix · 28/02/2025 10:23

@SerendipityJane - oh yes they are cross that their narrative of Starmer the loser just disappeared.

Trump doesn't care about Farage either, and he's happy with Chagos.

Which makes Reform and the Conservatives look fairly stupid this morning. That was not supposed to happen.

SerendipityJane · 28/02/2025 10:42

You can bet your life that had Labour in opposition contacted any foreign leader and asked them to thwart the will of the democratically elected parliament of the UK, we would never have heard the end of it.

I hope that in private, if it was mentioned (and I doubt is was, which is another indication that St. Kemi commands fuck all respect) Starmer merely said quietly "you wouldn't listen to traitors would you ?" and moved on.

Obviously the media will already have forgotten it.

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2025 11:14

Badenoch calling for Trump to overturn the government's decision on Chagos was extraordinarily under reported.

Chagos is pretty much the only thing the right wing have at the moment.

Never mind the UN General Assembly vote. We only value UNs votes when they go our way.

That said I think the deal will stall.

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2025 11:15

Has Badenoch commented on Braverman's remarks about the definition of Englishness?

Farage very quiet at the moment.

cardibach · 28/02/2025 11:27

Alexandra2001 · 28/02/2025 07:39

Of course they should face trial but should we risk a tariff war and a deal on Ukraine to make this point to a POTUS that will ignore the request in anycase, just as Trump & then Biden refused the request to bring back Ann Sacoolas to face trial here.
IF, as it looks, Trump has secured their release from Romania, its highly unlikely he would then extradite them to the UK is it.

Jenrik doesn't ever believe what he says or writes, he will say or do whatever will embarrass Labour or further his career.

Oh, I wasn’t suggesting Starmer should make a big deal of it. Just that Jenrick is correct. Stopped clocks and all that. I wouldn’t trust him to say it consistently if it suddenly went against his interests.

cardibach · 28/02/2025 11:32

Plenty of people saying Chagos is too costly and ‘it was advisory’ (without any apparent irony, or indeed memory, in relation to Brexit) but it all feels like flailing around for a negative. Lots still trying to say Lammy’s previous comments will be a problem in relations with Trump, apparently forgetting his VP literally called him ‘America’s Hitler’ and that Trump and Lammy have already had talks…

One in particular. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how fair minded many usually vehemently vocal and determined anti Starmer posters have been this morning.

bombastix · 28/02/2025 12:10

I think it will do Starmer some good in the polls. He certainly needs it.

DuncinToffee · 28/02/2025 12:13

His next steps

AFP: This weekend Starmer phone conference with Baltics leaders, then bilat with Zelenskyy, then full meeting with leaders of France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Czechia, Romania, Turkey, NATO (Rutte), EU (von der Leyen, Costa).
