Entirely predictable. He loved his state dinner with the late Queen.

I think the positive is he won't try and hold hands with Starmer like he did May and Charles will less diplomatic about his opinion than the queen!

bombastix · 27/02/2025 20:54

I think Starmer has done very well. But let's see the actual results in due course.

US UK FTA revived. A smart move there.

DuncinToffee · 27/02/2025 21:02

Agreed, he did very well

This from Trump will upsett Farage, Badenoch, Truss, certain mn'ers

Trump described Starmer as a “tough negotiator”, and someone who loves his country.

Well I'm no starmer fan but I think he's done extremely well at the press conference he has to walk a very hair breadth tight rope and he did well.

Come on, who had ‘I agree with Robert Jenrick’ on their bingo card for today? I did not.

Strange times.

Notonthestairs · 27/02/2025 21:38

Given that Trump can't remember calling Zelensky a dictator, nothing that he says can be relied upon. He may well u-turn & declare tariffs before I go to bed this evening.

But overall Starmer etc managed the meeting well.
Obviously that won't stop people complaining.

I don't think they will have much to complain on;

Chagos done
US UK FTA starts
Article V restated
Ukraine.... well did the UK do enough there? Unclear.

Some of this meeting was just about the UK's economic interests. And that was very good news, I think.

DuncinToffee · 27/02/2025 22:01

It will all hinge on what deal Trump and Putin will make

Trump is completely unreliable

OP posts:
bombastix · 27/02/2025 22:11

Well that's the thing. I rather got the impression that the UK had secured a lot of goodwill from Trump for its own purposes. Yes there seemed to have been some discussion on Ukraine; but this was not as significant. Trump mentioned a separate peacekeeping deal at one point: but that wasn't a security guarantee.

If however you were the UK government wanting economic guarantees and access to US tech it was a back of a net performance. And truthfully we do both want and need those things. The EU can't provide either of them.

DuncinToffee · 27/02/2025 22:19

I wasn't criticising Starmer, just that you can't trust Trump.

Anyway even our 'I am not a Starmer fan' visitor seemed impressed with Starmer Wink

It is so painful to say, but he is right.

Just said on the Trump thread that I'm sure I moved universes - having to agree with Jenrick is just added proof.

Of course they should face trial but should we risk a tariff war and a deal on Ukraine to make this point to a POTUS that will ignore the request in anycase, just as Trump & then Biden refused the request to bring back Ann Sacoolas to face trial here.
IF, as it looks, Trump has secured their release from Romania, its highly unlikely he would then extradite them to the UK is it.

Jenrik doesn't ever believe what he says or writes, he will say or do whatever will embarrass Labour or further his career.

MsJinks · 28/02/2025 07:50

Trump said he knew nothing about the Tate brothers flying to Florida - and (I think, it's difficult to tell with him) he denied interfering in getting their passports back - he will look into it though!
I thought they may be given a job by Trump - but he will maybe check which way the wind is blowing first, or forget he thought of that (hopefully).
I doubt it's the right time to discuss extradition tbh, plus unfortunately some folk like them and might have pathetic little rallies for them here, which may be better avoided- they are supposed to return to Romania for their next court hearing though and perhaps we should wait and pray they are convicted there?
This is not necessarily my core belief on what should happen but all in context of today - our US relationship, preferences not to raise Tate profiles in U.K.

Alexandra2001 · 28/02/2025 08:02

I could understand it, if the Tate's were US citizens, so to me, this has all the hallmarks of Musk interfering, who was very critical of the UK and Starmer, yet here we are, witnessing a love in between Trump and KS, with none of the criticisms Musk directed at us all.

But like most "love at first sight" romances, will it last!!

BIossomtoes · 28/02/2025 08:15

Personally I think Trump’s doing us an enormous favour by offering the Tates a refuge. Hopefully he’ll make them so comfortable they never want to return.
