"Fat" Monica in Friends isn't even fat

As per title. Rewatching all the old Friends episodes. How in the name of the wee donkey was this a recurring joke? She's basically normal sized but beside some very slim costars. I know it was a different time but it is so jarring to watch now.

Fat Monica was fat. Bridget Jones played by Renee Zellweger was not fat. The character of Natalie in Love Actually played by Martine McCutcheon was absolutely not fat.

petermaddog · 17/02/2025 22:23

Courteney Cox is monica
a fat suit

And 'the show isn't over until the fat bloke sings!' Grin

And remember Ted and his posh boss? (Ralph...?) And the sexual tension between them...😆

Or did Ralph just want a friend...........? Sad

Oh Ralph.. the heartbreak

Oh, she was fat. If you are Monica's size and you need to convince yourself you're not fat, then sorry.

TalkingAboutaWolf · 18/02/2025 04:17

This woman? From Love Actually? Not chubby? Jesus. She's not chubby, she's fat. I'm almost half her size, to me she looks properly fat (not morbidly obese, but fat), not just chubby. She has no waist, huge shoulders, large upper arms, chunky thighs, shaped like a mid-sized barrell.

Bridget Jones is chubby. Not fat, but not slim either. Plump, maybe, would be the word.

Fat Monica is morbidly obese.

You have issues. The LA woman is not fat. Bridget Jones is not plump.

You must be joking. She’s wearing a boxy jumper there. If you watch the film, you’ll find that she’s slim.

I don’t know for sure as can’t weigh her, but watching the movie it is clear she is a healthy weight both in that image and throughout the movie.

can I ask gently, do you have a disorder, either eating, or body dysmorphia etc? It is clear you can’t recongise a healthy weight. So there is something more going on with you,

I haven't seen LA, so I'm only going on the picture. She's old fashioned plump in that picture and I would be unhappy if I was like that.

It's not that (many of us in this thread) are unhealthily thin (definitely not), but that our normal has changed. I have pictures from the late 90s where the the girls who were thought of as the chubby ones are the norm today.

Oh yes... soo fat, if you weigh half her weight (especially at her height), you're not a healthy weight.

The late 90s when heroin chic was in and you were supposed to look like an anorexic twig?

Only if you were a celeb. The rest of us were just normal size. Didn't exercise, apart from having to walk everywhere, and just ate whatever you were given for tea, supplemented by sweets and cakes from Sayers. I don't remember ever consciously wanting to be a certain size, just to have a flatter stomach, but my mum used to tell me that was normal- and balanced by my boobs.

As much as I agree our normal has changed, most of us can still recognise underweight, healthy weight and overweight. Some can’t. Possibly including yourself, however as you’ve not seen the movie, you are just going on thay image.

the poster has deliberately picked an unflattering picture, and cropped it so she looks heavier, as you can see from subsequent pics posted, martine, is far from plump. Often images can make us look heavier, as can certain clothes. If you still feel that way after viewing the other images , then like the pp how feels she’s straight up fat. Then, you also need to be concerned for your views on women’s bodies and weight.

id say she is likely a size ten to 12 in the movie. Max. And she’s 5 ft 7. Yes in comparison to holly wood size 0 she is heavy, but in terms of health I don’t think there can be any doubt she’s a healthy weight.

Autther · 15/02/2025 22:28

Maybe not fat by today's standards 😂

Haha no she was fat then and would be fat now.

Fat people today try to justify ‘it’s normal’, no it’s not normal by today standards, today just has even more fat people waddling around the place.

Do you really think that Martine McCutcheon was 'plump' in the pictures from LA where she is with Hugh Grant? She is slimmer than a lot of 90s pin ups were in that era! The first picture is incredibly unflattering and the person who posted it cropped it to make it even more so.

XiCi · 18/02/2025 08:51

TalkingAboutaWolf if you really are half the size of martine in love actually then you must look desperately unwell. I'm hoping you're just a wind up merchant, if not I hope you get the medical attention that you need.

XiCi · 18/02/2025 09:18

Apparently the fat shaming comments in LA came from a female work colleague and martine herself and were written in this way to show how uber critical women were of each other and themselves when in fact, from a male point of view, Hugh grant - he just looked at her and thought she was absolutely perfect. Kind of ironic really on a thread full of women obsessing about other women's weight. I wonder how much time women waste on this shit. The endless fad diets, the denial of food treats here and there, constantly run ragged fitting over priced gym classes in with full time work and home life all to try and fit with some perceived ideal on instagram that isn't even real, has just been filtered to fuck.

You've got problems.

BlueSilverCats · 18/02/2025 09:39

@Octomingo , that was your mistake. It's not an easy pic to find , so one might wonder if the poster chose it deliberately. It's an unflattering outfit too due to the jumper.

Just google Natalie, Love Actually and loads of stills from the movie will show up in various outfits/poses.

I wince at the boy in the on the beach free lounge ad.

Me too. Stuffing his face with doughnuts from the free buffet. I'm certainly not slim but it's no wonder there's an obesity crisis when this is becoming the norm.
