Anyone had colonoscopy or gastroscopy and can answer some questions please ...really unwell

Hi all. Had a colonoscopy and gastrocopy today. Was worse than I expected but all went ok, left the hospital feeling ok (had sedation). I've felt awful since being home 5 hours ago. Still pooing liquid...just pooed myself (sorry tmi) and been vomiting. Only vomited twice (green bile) but I feel really, really sick and can't move or speak.
Anyone else felt like this? How long until it wears off please?
I feel like I have a sickness bug and can't manage to drink.

You need to call out of hours on 111.

stayathomer · 15/02/2025 20:17

Yes sorry op I was told after mine anything out of the ordinary to contact them and let them know

TheJumperMan · 15/02/2025 20:18

I've had both of these and although they were awful, I had no issues afterwards. As above I recommend seeking some medical advice.

The only side effects I had was feeling tired from the sedation. I'd definitely call 111.

Cornettoninja · 15/02/2025 20:20

Yup, another one saying to ring 111 and follow their advice. Is there another adult with you? If not you need to go to A&E imho but I appreciate that sounds like an awful option given how poorly you are.

Christmasbear1 · 15/02/2025 20:20

if you can't move or speak, I'd suggest a&e.

Anon885 · 15/02/2025 20:21

When I say can't speak, I mean I feel so sick I struggle to speak. I haven't actually lost my voice. Sorry, should have clarified

I'm also freezing and shivering and then hot

Definitely call 111, I've had several Colonoscopys and never had any issues.
Did you manage to drink all the prep liquid beforehand?
I'm usually a couple of days before I need a BM.
Hope you get some treatment that helps soon.

Floralnomad · 15/02/2025 20:25

Do you know what sedation you had as this sounds exactly like I get if I get given Midazolam , hence I now say I’m allergic to it and decline . Usually takes about 48 hours for me to feel better and it also made me short of breath so I had to sleep in a chair upright but I do have COPD so that may have made it worse . Hope you feel better soon . Probably worth calling the OOH

Doglazymorning · 15/02/2025 20:27

Please call 111. I felt like this with a gallstone attack and felt very ill. Maybe gastroscopy caused a gallstone to block gallbladder? Not sure if that’s possible but my symptoms were similar.

Pinkpillow7 · 15/02/2025 20:29

111 OP

BerryMummypudding · 15/02/2025 20:30

Nurse here, call 111 straight away. Xxx
Listen to your body op. Take care.

Cornettoninja · 15/02/2025 20:35

You can use the online 111 service https://111.nhs.uk to get a call back, at least you can give them a heads up you’re finding it difficult to speak.

are you alone? Please text someone to come be with you if you can.

echt · 15/02/2025 20:42

I've had a number of colonoscopies over the years and with this last one a couple of weeks ago felt the sedation a bit more.

They should have given you a follow-up sheet about what to expect post-procedure, but I can say, looking at mine, that the symptoms you describe are not OK.
I'm in Melbourne and would get myself down to the local A&E, but maybe 111 in the UK. I don't mean go alone - you sound too ill to do this.

All the best, and hope you feel better soon.

I'm also freezing and shivering and then hot

I’d say that’s a 111 reason on its own.

mindutopia · 15/02/2025 21:16

You absolutely need 111. I’ve had both and never experienced either. I think this is quite serious. I only felt tired and had a sore throat with gastroscopy.

MumofCrohnie · 15/02/2025 21:19

My DD has had 2 colonoscopies and gastroscopies, under general, and had nothing like this afterwards. I would have been very concerned and would certainly have taken her back in to hospital if she appeared so unwell after the procedures.

Pinkpillow7 · 15/02/2025 21:22

Are you ok OP? What’s happening?

PoisonRain · 15/02/2025 21:23

I've had both and felt completely normal afterwards...this doesn't sound right OP.

It could be after effects of the sedation I suppose but feeling shivery suggests a fever. Get onto 111, and trying sucking some ice or sipping tiny amounts of water if you can. Good luck, sorry you feel so rough.

coldcallerbaiter · 15/02/2025 21:29

That’s a flu type bug (probably)or an infection caused by them nicking/damaging you in the procedure ( unlikely) I’ve had 2 colonoscopies and no effects whatsoever after.

CoastalCalm · 15/02/2025 21:31

Hospital

TwoShades1 · 15/02/2025 21:53

It doesn’t sound like a normal reaction. You should seek medical help. As most have stated a normal response is feeling tired.

Anon885 · 15/02/2025 20:22

I'm also freezing and shivering and then hot

Anon,
The shivering/ freezing could be a temperature spike.
It's rare, but you could of being perforated [nicked] by the probe. Please go to the hospital.
Taz.

LillyPJ · 15/02/2025 22:16

I had a colonoscopy but didn't have sedation (other than gas). I was fine afterwards (and went straight to the pub!) Perhaps phone 111 or the number you were probably given to contact if you had concerns?
