Anyone had colonoscopy or gastroscopy and can answer some questions please ...really unwell

Hi all. Had a colonoscopy and gastrocopy today. Was worse than I expected but all went ok, left the hospital feeling ok (had sedation). I've felt awful since being home 5 hours ago. Still pooing liquid...just pooed myself (sorry tmi) and been vomiting. Only vomited twice (green bile) but I feel really, really sick and can't move or speak.
Anyone else felt like this? How long until it wears off please?
I feel like I have a sickness bug and can't manage to drink.

Doesn't sound good. Please phone your urgent care or go in.
I had one, no sedation, and was fine. Same when I picked up a friend after hers - and we went for lunch after and she had a burger and a milkshake!

I had chips and a pint of beer! The thought of going to the pub after helped to relax me while I was having the colonoscopy.

Thank you all for your messages, it's good to know how others felt. I know the risk is perforation but from what I've read online that's agony, like being stabbed apparently. I am sore but it's bearable. I haven't eaten since a piece of toast Friday lunchtime but that's partly because I was vomitting. I'm just quite weak and dizzy now but that's expected after the sickness. I'm a bit scared to eat proper foods in case it hurts. I had my first sips of drink this morning and it hurt my stomach.

@Anon885 I have had a bowel perforation before and it sounds like your symptoms were actually worse than what I experienced.

User11120 · 17/02/2025 10:49

@Anon885 do you still have a fever?

3luckystars · 17/02/2025 10:55

Why did you post here if you were going to ignore everyone.

This is YOUR HEALTH. No none of this is normal after those procedures and you could have an infection. You need to see someone medical today, however you manage it.

Yes you do have a high pain threshold if you are staying married to that man. You need to wake up. This is your life and your health and you should care about yourself.
You are a miracle and this is your one shot a a life.

frecklejuice · 17/02/2025 11:02

Op you really need to get checked out and your dp sounds like a dick so just ignore him but please get checked out.

User11120 · 17/02/2025 11:04

@3luckystars it's shocking and she will inevitably cost the NHS so much more when she ends up being blue lighted to hospital, when she could have managed it with early intervention.

Anon885 · 17/02/2025 11:12

I no longer have the shivers and fever and I'm no longer vomiting. When I originally posted I felt really unwell. If I'd have still been vomiting and shivering the next day, I'd have phoned the hospital.

So I'm now assuming I just need more time to get over the procedure. I'll maybe try and eat today and see how that goes, I've I've got to do the school run later.

@User11120 what were your symptoms? I've looked online and apparently it's very unlikely to be a perforation without a temperature. Also it's meant to cause severe pain.

Please call 111. I’ve just come across your thread and read your posts to see if you did call anyone, and I see you haven’t.

Firstly, that is not normal behaviour from your selfish dick of a “partner”. I’m worried about you and I don’t even know you. I sure as hell know that if you were my partner, though, I’d be insisting you call someone.

Secondly, that is bot normal side effects of colonoscopy/gastrostomy. I’ve had both and just felt tired from the sedation.

Please look after yourself better than this!

User11120 · 17/02/2025 11:21

Hi @Anon885 I had fever and shivers as you described previously. I didn't have any vomiting though this is a key symptom. I had stomach pain as you describe.

If your fever comes back you need to go to A&E. My perforation was caused by Crohn's disease, not from a colonoscopy. I've had multiple colonoscopies and never have any symptoms at all afterwards. Based on this I am wondering if you have a micro perforation which your bowel wall may have sealed off. If so you should be nil by mouth and in hospital.

Cornettoninja · 17/02/2025 11:22

Okay, you’ve made it to Monday, now call the endoscopy unit and seek some proper advice.

User11120 · 17/02/2025 11:23

And yes the endoscopy unit would absolutely want to know you have had these symptoms. It's very strange you haven't called them.

Anon885 · 17/02/2025 11:27

Honestly, I just feel like a drama queen. I'm not bent over in agony, no temp. I just feel like a waste of time. My partner is a doctor but evidently doesn't thinking should get further advice, so I feel completely stupid.

P00hsticks · 17/02/2025 11:28

I've only just come across this thread but would add to those urging you to call the number you should have been given in case of any side effects after the procedure.

I'm not a medical person, but it could be that what you've experienced is the same as I had after bowel surgery - namely, ileus or 'frozen bowel', where the bowel simply shuts down for a bit after being handled. The nausea and vomiting bile certainly sound similar, and after a few days it usually starts working correctly again.

But please do get it checked out

User11120 · 17/02/2025 11:28

What's stupid is you posting here instead of asking the unit who did this to you, if this is normal. You aren't listening to our advice explaining it's not normal. So just go about your day. We've told you it's not normal so there is nothing left for any of us to say.

Toulousetoolose · 17/02/2025 11:34

Tbf you do seem a bit stupid. If you weren’t you’d just phone the unit and ask instead of wringing your hands to strangers online

Also, it’s school holidays in the UK this week so where are you doing the school run?

I'm in Wales. School holidays start next week.

Just ring up the hospital and ask for advice, I honestly don't understand why you wouldn't? You're a mother, that means taking responsibility for your health, not just for your sake, but for theirs. There is clearly something wrong as everyone on this thread is telling you that they didn't have the same experience as you, unless something went wrong, ie perforated bowel. Please don't risk your health like this, it's nonsensical. You're not a drama queen, who cares if you are? If you're checked over and everything is fine then that's good news, that's what everyone wants. Please just call the hospital x

Chonkadoodle · 17/02/2025 11:47

Hospitals are full of norovirus at the moment - my money would be on that.

Yes! And she's just revealed that her partner is a doctor! I wonder if that's a medical doctor or a doctor of mathematics or something? It's all starting to seem a bit preposterous!

Zippidydoodah · 17/02/2025 12:09

Your partner is a what now?! 😳

LillyPJ · 17/02/2025 12:11

When you have these sorts of procedures, they always explain and/or give leaflets about possible side effects and with a way to contact them if you have any concerns. I can't understand why you didn't do that instead of posting on here and even then ignoring everyone's advice.

quite possibly, but having just had endoscopies does complicate that assumption.

@Anon885 look, you’ve had an awful weekend, you still can’t eat, it hurts to drink - you need to let a professional involved make the call on whether it’s something to worry about or not. Odds are it is unfortunate timing with a virus but you’re taking a gamble on it not being a complication. You don’t know for sure, your DH doesn’t know either.

ring the endoscopy unit.

She posted that info on Saturday in fairness. Tbh I have opinions on that but I’m refraining from airing those comments because it’s not helpful to OP’s immediate situation.
