Need a character from a book that wears a comfy tracksuit

Or jeans and a hoodie? Any ideas?
I’m a secondary school teacher and some new young enthusiastic English teacher wants everyone to dress up for world book day. I don’t want to piss on his chips, but I also do not do dress up. If I can do a cosy ‘costume’ everyone will be happy?

Surely either Biff or Chip. Nothing easier.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 11/02/2025 22:05

Most characters in books wear normal clothes.
Normal teaching clothes? Miss Honey.
Very well put together outfit with a monkey teddy? Mrs Coulter
Plenty of recent TV adaptations of books which should be well known are just bog standard people with ordinary clothes. Lessons in Chemistry, The Apple Never Falls, Normal People.
Mumsy jumper and a stick? Mrs Weasley
I'm sure looking through your book shelves will yield some inspiration.

Draw a playing card with a sharpie pen on a plain white pillow case, cut holes for head and arms, wear over black top and trousers. Playing card from Alice in Wonderland.

Love this suggestion!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/02/2025 22:34

Are you up for making something ? Big bit of card, paint it yellow. Write in black on it “golden ticket” “wonka factory admit one”. Afix some string so you can hand it round your neck, wear with black trousers and t shirt. You are the ticket from Charlie and the chocolate factory

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/02/2025 22:51

Do you have dungarees or a boiler suit? And a hair scarf? Add some boots and red lipstick, carry a spade, you are a land girl, many kids books are wwii based. Digging for victory was one that was popular recently.

DoYouReally · 11/02/2025 23:14

Paddington - Blue coat, red hat, jeans and a brief case?

Goldilocks- blonde wig, normal dress and just carry around, 3 teddy bears?

No idea on modern books but Paddington is an easy popular one.

wonderstuff · 11/02/2025 23:21

Thank you all for very sweet suggestions, I really do hate dressing up and I am absolutely not up for making anything, wearing a wig or anything similar! I am up for taking an opportunity to wear comfier clothes than normal!

I think Miss Honey may be a good shout, although the kids tell me I’ve got more Trunchball vibes 😂

Miss Trunchball wears joggers and a sweatshirt with a belt around the middle!

My son hated world book day for this exact reason.

I loved the year he went in his uniform and said he was Me from My Diary
I couldn't argue with his logic 😁🤷

Make a cape from a black bin bag over your trackie, carry a broom and be Madam Hooch.

EdithStourton · 12/02/2025 00:52

Go as Mum from the Biff and Chip books?

Last year we all wore black tracksuits and painted/cut out a Mr man or little miss and hung it from a ribbon around our necks. So easy.Kids had to guess which one we were. (Matched our personalities!)

Hahaha this reminds me of a teacher I had at senior school. I can't remember why but we had Mr Men books for some activity of some kind and the one he had brought from home had been "annotated" with saucy alternatives to the story 😂🤣😂🤣😂

I have never seen a man go so red so fast and snatch away a book like it was on fire.

MelisandeLongfield · 12/02/2025 07:39

Dress entirely in blue and say you are Thomas the Tank Engine.

JimHalpertsWife · 11/02/2025 21:23

Our school does "cosy world book day" - come in pjs and dressing gowns, or whatever normal clothes you feel comfy and cosy in.

Asking teenagers to come in PJs may result in outfits which are not appropriate for school.

Jeans and a red and white stripy top, wheres wally

This is my 'go to' every bloody WBD I switch it up occasionally by swapping the jeans for a blue skirt and stripy socks, and voila...I'm Where's Wenda

tinkersfig · 12/02/2025 08:56

A pail full of small packets of flour wrapped in clingfilm = Charlie Bucket

ladymalfoy45 · 12/02/2025 09:04

PJs ,dressing gown and towel Arthur Dent
Without towel and with sleep mask Brigit Jones.

Flustration · 12/02/2025 09:14

Violet Beauregarde wears a tracksuit in the most recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film. Quentin Blake's illustrations show her in a tshirt and some sort of loose trousers/jogging bottoms.

Black joggers and tshirt/sweatshirt - pretty much any character from Divergent.
