I don’t, I only remember the leavers school disco

Nope. They make such a fuss of it now. My son's leavers assembly was so OTT, kids sobbing, parents too. Maybe I just have a cold stone heart?

TheLurpackYears · 11/02/2025 20:18

No. I remember the first and the second though.

Ridiculousradish · 11/02/2025 20:19

Oh and when he didn't want to take part in the play his teacher had a very serious talk with me. Said she didn't want him to forever regret not being in it. He's 15 now, couldn't give a fuck!

Yes, there was a leavers' assembly and the afternoon mainly consisted of t-shirt signing and playing outdoor games all afternoon, as well as being treated to some nice ice cream. It was a fun day!

JackJarvisEsq · 11/02/2025 20:22

Primary yes.

the teacher, who we all hated, had us stand in a circle, link arms and sing Auld Lang Syne

she told us to look round the circle and remember that day and I do.

so she had some heart

frecklejuice · 11/02/2025 20:23

Never thought about it before but now I have I've realised I have no clue what we did on the last day! Secondary I can remember but not primary.

JudgeBread · 11/02/2025 20:25

Very vaguely. I remember the leavers assembly and drawing unicorns on all my friend's shirts. I still have my signed shirt tucked away somewhere!

TickingAlongNicely · 11/02/2025 20:27

I remember shirt signing and getting my encyclopedia.

My DDs last term was very similar to mine...SATs, residential, play, disco, assembly, shirt signing, the safety place...
The only addition was DD got a hoody.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 11/02/2025 20:28

I have a vague memory of saying goodbye to the children who were going to different secondary schools to me. I don't think there was much fuss though, and we didn't have a party or anything.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 11/02/2025 20:28

No, but I remember the yr 6 nativity and leavers play

coxesorangepippin · 11/02/2025 20:31

Not really

I do remember the last day of secondary

My and my supposed best mate were hanging out with another friend of ours and she was trying hard to make me jealous by almost flirting with the other girl. It was very odd. I remember thinking, school's over and childhood is too

Rocknrollstar · 11/02/2025 20:32

Back in the day , they didn’t do anything special. Maybe we had a class party but I can’t remember. I avoided leavers assembly at Grammar School. I was already working and felt no need to go back.

NerrSnerr · 11/02/2025 20:32

In primary I remember writing on each other's shirts. Gemma H drew lipstick on my collar. I also remember feeling quite sad and going to sit on the school field after school by myself.

I remember my last day in secondary, writing on shirts again. I think GCSE results day was a bigger deal though.

I don't specifically remember leaving college at 17 (I was 18 late august). I think i was too excited for university.

SouthLondonMum22 · 11/02/2025 20:34

Yes. We had a prom and it was a big deal.

Fouradayistoomuch · 11/02/2025 20:35

Yes, happy memories of playing rounders all day for the last few weeks of the summer term and then signing autograph books on the last day. Life was simpler back in the 1970s

SushiSheep · 11/02/2025 20:37

No I don’t.
But then, when I left primary school, it was so long ago it was practically the Dark Ages so I guess we must’ve scratched our initials onto each other’s animal skin dress!

MelisandeLongfield · 11/02/2025 20:39

Yes - I was only in for the morning as we were going away and catching a train in the afternoon. It was just before the wedding of Charles and Diana so I got given my commemorative mug, but I missed out on taking home my contribution to the wedding diorama we'd made as they were taking it down after lunch.

spiderlight · 11/02/2025 20:39

Very, very vaguely. I remember an assembly and the deputy head telling us we were about to go from being big fish in a little pond to small fish in a big pond, but that's about it except for being sad about saying goodbye to our amazing teacher. There wasn't a big hooha like there is these days.

Andoutcomethewolves · 11/02/2025 20:40

I don't remember the day at school really but I remember the walk home - it was a village school and there really wasn't anything else in the village except the school and the church (no shops etc), so I knew that would probably be the last time I'd have reason to walk that route! It was a lovely sunny day, down winding country roads past farms and woodland and there were flowers everywhere. I cried (and was very glad none of my school friends saw me do so! 😅)

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 11/02/2025 20:49

Too right I do and it was…. 45 years ago.
We were allowed a little party in our classroom. Teacher told us we were allowed to bring records in but only ABBA ones. So we got other records and put then in the sleeves of ABBA records.
I had been practising dancing to my favourite song - Brass In Pocket - by Pretenders. I had sat next to the same boy for four years and thought he might finally, finally notice me and ask me to dance.
He did not.
The teacher was most confused when the boys put the Sex Pistols on.
Then I went home and cried.
And thirty years later the boy who never asked me to dance met me by chance and said… I was going to ask you to dance but you were too tall for me.
What might have been, eh?

RandomMess · 11/02/2025 20:49

I missed it as my parents took me out of school early so we could go on the usual 3 week camping holiday. Never forgive them.

Had a shit summer as all arrangements to meet up over the summer were missed out on as was walking to secondary school together.

Titsywoo · 11/02/2025 20:51

No I don't at all. I still have the shirt covered in signatures though.

Justploddingonandon · 11/02/2025 20:53

Very vaguely remember an assembly, can't remember the rest of the day. But I was in a tiny school with mixed year classes so most the class weren't leaving.

fashionqueen0123 · 11/02/2025 20:54

Yes I remember signing our shirts. Which I still have. Doing a play for the rest of the school in the last week. I don’t remember the rest of the actual though.

Secondary school I remember leaving 6th form, we had an assembly where they played some nice 90s/00s girl power type songs (girls school) and we all cried our eyes out.

CharismaticMegafauna · 11/02/2025 20:57

I remember the run-up to leaving (putting together a school magazine, getting a thesaurus signed, the residential) but not the last day itself.
