Do you have bookcases filled with books at home?

CatteryCatss · 08/02/2025 12:50

I grew up without books at home, but my DM frequently read magazines.

Surprisingly, I turned out to be a big reader in adulthood. I have bookcases either side of the chimney breast filled with books (as well as LEGO sets and a couple of ornaments) I also have a bookcase on my stairs and in the office, which are filled.

Whenever I visit my DM, I’m reminded of my childhood without books and it makes me quite sad!

I read a lot, but use kindle/library/passed on books mainly. I pass on a lot of books when I've read them so I only have two shelves with books that I've not yet read, plus a handful I'll keep, and ones that need rehoming.
We had a full bookcase when the children were young though. And they each had a bookshelf in their room.

Junibug · 08/02/2025 12:57

Yes! A whole room with floor to ceiling bookshelves on 3 walls, stacked full. A joint collection of mine and my husband's. Loads yet to read but love sitting in there and looking at them all. My absolute comfort.

DramaAlpaca · 08/02/2025 12:57

Yes, books on bookshelves in every bedroom and most downstairs rooms, and lots more stored in the attic. We all have kindles but I love my books.

Yes multiple bookcases. We had a lot of books whe. I was a child, my mum loved to read as did I but they weren’t stored on bookcases.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/02/2025 12:59

Yes.

I think we have about 15 Billy Bookcases in total.

I could never live open plan. I need the wall space!

twistyizzy · 08/02/2025 12:59

Yes bookshelves in every room, completely filled. DD has floor to ceiling in her room with over 400 books and a collection that's still growing 😆
My Dad was a bookseller so it is ingrained in my psyche. A house without shelves of books just doesn't feel right.

Kaminari · 08/02/2025 13:00

Yep, huge book shelf downstairs, cubby holes in wardrobe filled with books, kids bookshelves in each room. Books strewn around in random places including on top of the microwave. I still end up going to bed with my kindle though!
I was raised in a house filled with books.

username299 · 08/02/2025 13:00

I have two bookcase on either side of the fireplace full of books. They used to be double stacked and I recently decluttered and must have got rid off about 500 books.

Kendodd · 08/02/2025 13:00

Yes, lots of bookshelves full of books.
Incidentally, books make really good insulation if you have the shelfs on outside walls. Smile

EggshellAttic · 08/02/2025 13:01

We’re a household with two literature PhDs. We have all the books.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 08/02/2025 13:02

My step dad owned so many books but barely read any. He'd make a huge deal about reading a book and being a man who works and isn't on benefits (we lived in a poor area)

That said we were also poor 🙄

He'd then look down on us for watching tv

He was a twat

I've now started my own little collection of books and I'm slowly filling up my bookcase with books I've actually read. Same for dd 🥰

ALunchbox · 08/02/2025 13:02

We do but I grew up in a house of books so it came naturally.
I solely use the library now in an effort not to clutter the house so I don't think mine will be expanding. My daughter's on the other hand keeps growing.

SatsumaCat · 08/02/2025 13:04

I've always read more library books than bought ones, and have gone through quite a few decluttering phases where I've got rid of some of my small collection as I don't tend to re read and decided what was the point of keeping them. We have some shelves of books (mostly DHs / classics as he's not willing to declutter his "best ones") in the lounge. A shelf in the kitchen diner, a small bookcase on the landing (mostly kids books - eg harry potter) and the kids have shelves in their rooms too. So still quite a lot.

TickingAlongNicely · 08/02/2025 13:04

Less then we used to. DDs have a bookcase each, and we have 1.5 tally Billy's in the living room (but some shelves are doubled stacked). I used to have Billy's just of my books. But most of our new Fiction is on kindle now. Occasionally charity shop, read then donate back.

Fawn87 · 08/02/2025 13:05

No. I read about 2 books a week but rarely read the same book twice and I get rid of them not long after I've read them. I don't have a big living space and some of that is taken up with the kids' toys so even if I wanted to have them I couldn't. The kids have bookshelves in their bedrooms.

Natsku · 08/02/2025 13:05

Yes but not enough of them because the bookcase on the landing has books stacked two deep, and more piled on top of the rows! Have one bookcase on the landing, one in my bedroom, one in DD's room and one in DS's room. Library books get piled up on a shelf in the lounge and whatever book I'm currently reading lives on the chest of drawers in the hallway (opposite the loo, so I can grab it and enjoy a couple of minutes reading when I go to the loo, as I've always done for as long as I can remember)

Want more bookcases but don't have space for them. In a few years though I'll be able to turn the playroom into a study and get more bookcases then.

sparrowflewdown · 08/02/2025 13:05

I have one wall full of books. I went through a stage of following Marie Kondo and got rid of most of my books from when I was 18 - 30 years old. I bitterly regret it. I read English & History at uni so had quite a collection...but Bukowski and Marx were not bringing me joy! Confused

MelisandeLongfield · 08/02/2025 13:06

Yes, and several piles that won't fit into the bookshelves!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2025 13:06

Yes as many bookcases as possible!

savingthespecs · 08/02/2025 13:06

No, none.

I am a reader though.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/02/2025 13:07

Just one Billy bookcase, but I could easily live without it. It's extremely rare that I read the same book once and I don't need it to show off.

Cattery · 08/02/2025 13:07

Been reading since I was 4. Degree in literature. No bookcases full of books tho.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 08/02/2025 13:08

Yes, books and bookcases everywhere!!

It's not to show off! There is nothing like picking up a well-worn book from your 20s.

61here · 08/02/2025 13:09

Yes definitely! Husband says we have 11 bookcases in the house but I discount at least 2 as one is my craft books and one is only 2 shelves of cookery books!! I want more as my bedside table us groaning under the weight of books!!
