Do you have bookcases filled with books at home?

CatteryCatss · 08/02/2025 12:50

I grew up without books at home, but my DM frequently read magazines.

Surprisingly, I turned out to be a big reader in adulthood. I have bookcases either side of the chimney breast filled with books (as well as LEGO sets and a couple of ornaments) I also have a bookcase on my stairs and in the office, which are filled.

Whenever I visit my DM, I’m reminded of my childhood without books and it makes me quite sad!

No, I have a shelf with my favourites, the ones I'll read again etc. The rest are either on a kindle or get taken to the charity shop or passed to family members.

harriethoyle · 08/02/2025 13:24

another book worm here! We have bookshelves in kitchen, lounge, spare room and also a library which has (according to dsd who counted them one day 🤣) over 1200 books on the floor to ceiling shelves. The library is my very favourite room in the house.

heyhopotato · 08/02/2025 13:24

Yes - love to re-read an old favourite book in the bath. Digital just isn't the same for that, although it is practical to be able to carry around a whole library when travelling or queueing!

My MIL reads something once and then passes it on or donates it so she doesn't have many books, I couldn't live like that. My OH clings on to every book he has because of it, although 99% of them are dog eared beyond belief having being read 10+ times.

Yes! Every single room (bar the utility) has books in it. Houses without books feel odd.

TheMoth · 08/02/2025 13:24

Less than I used to, because I use my library unless I can't find one I want. They're pretty good at new releases, to be fair. I use the kindle too. Most of the books on my shelves are ones I would read again. Others are passed on.

mitogoshigg · 08/02/2025 13:25

Yes, 2 rooms worth plus I got rid of around 1000 when I moved. My parents don't have anywhere near as many, mum offers me books when she's finished, lends to friends and takes to the charity shop after a year or two typically unless pretty coffee table type books

BertieBotts · 08/02/2025 13:25

We have lots but I rarely read paperbacks any more, I most often read on Kindle, and more recently that means the Kindle app on my phone.

For the children we read paper books to them. I think it's easier for children to interact with them. They don't see me reading though, because it just looks like I'm on my phone.

Loopytiles · 08/02/2025 13:25

Have a couple of bookshelves including in DCs’ rooms, but I rarely re-read books so use library/kindle/charity shops & give books to charity, and DH almost never reads books.

Unless books are re-read from time to time it’s just decor/dust so space can be better used IMO

Unpaidviewer · 08/02/2025 13:25

If anyone would like to purchase the penguin clothbound classic for me i would consider buying another bookcase. I've been hinting to me DH for a while now but he's ignored me.

unmemorableusername · 08/02/2025 13:27

Of course.

I feel sad when I see bookless homes.

Beesandhoney123 · 08/02/2025 13:27

Yes, we all read all the time. There are books everywhere. Every emergency books in the car. We all have kindles but we love books.
The attic is full of generations of kids and baby books.
I find it very hard to get a read on people if I can't see what they are reading.
And houses without books are weird to me. I love looking at opb.

LightedCandle · 08/02/2025 13:27

I have a whole wall of shelves filled with books in my study. When we moved it was about 18 boxes worth and my poor removal man got a workout. Mostly history/archaeology books as that’s my working background and interest.

MargaretThursday · 08/02/2025 13:28

Gwenhwyfar · 08/02/2025 13:10

Do you actually re-read it though?

Yes!

I love picking up a book that I haven't read for a bit, and either settling down with it. Sometimes I might read it again, sometimes I might read a favourite bit. Other times I might just start in the middle and read till the end.
It's like meeting a favourite friend you haven't met for some while and getting to know them again.

Me and dh have an ongoing discussion.

His view is we have too many books.
My view is we have far too few bookshelves.

I am right.

We only have 8 floor to ceiling bookshelves and a few not quite as tall.

I aim to own a library.

You are definitely right. 😁

I had a spare room as my "library" for a while, which I had to give up when DC2 finally decided they wantedto stop sharing a room. Still lots of book cases spreading around, bit I do miss it 😅

scrivette · 08/02/2025 13:29

Yes! Bookcases with books and books going up the stairs in piles (rather dangerous!) and piles of books in bedrooms.

We have so many and due to the ages of the children we have all age ranges. I love books!

Sawcootstoday · 08/02/2025 13:31

Yes, in every room (the kitchen just cookery books, though) except the bathroom. Also piles of books on the floor in the sitting room and bedrooms!
I have a kindle too, but don't like libraries. I prefer buying loads of books, then giving any I change my mind about to charity shops.

In childhood, my parents had one bookshelf in the sitting room and I had three in my bedroom.

Theresacatinmykitchenwhatamigonnado · 08/02/2025 13:32

Yes but I don't keep books for the sake of it. Eg if I buy a chick lit type book for a holiday, if it makes it home it goes to charity. If I'm not going to read it again or didn't enjoy it it goes. The books I keep are meaningful, my favourites, are beautiful or useful or part of the fucking huge TBR list.

justasking111 · 08/02/2025 13:32

Did have many books untill we downsized. Had to be ruthless with everything including books. Now have one wall in the office with a book case. Adult, children, hobbies still. Thank goodness for kindles

Kaleidoscope101 · 08/02/2025 13:32

No bookcases/shelves here.
I'm a big reader though but get all mine from my local library.
I rarely re read a book.

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 08/02/2025 13:32

Yes. Around 19 full size double stacked bookcases. I even have a library of sorts. It's a massive cupboard with a big window looking out to sea that is basically wall to wall bookcases with a big rocking chair that me and my kids can still fit in together despite them being 9 & 6.

I grew up in houses full of books as did dh. I can't imagine not having any now. Although I am trying to get rid of some, mostly fiction.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2025 13:33

Discombobble · 08/02/2025 13:20

A house without books is empty to me - I couldn’t feel at home

Bingo!

TickingAlongNicely · 08/02/2025 13:34

I was a hold on to every book type until we had to move abroad for DHs work and suddenly the books were well down the priority list fir our limited shipping allowance (13m³). Toys clothes, our superking sized bed were a lot more important.

Now I take the view that books are happier being read so its only if I will reread it ut stays. Otherwise.... enjoy and pass on.

Maybe it depends on genre as well. I love mystery, thriller types as light reading. The problem when I try to reread is I remember the ending which spoils it.

pencilcaseandcabbage · 08/02/2025 13:34

Yes! I've always wanted a library room with a comfy chair. At the moment we have one wall filled with wall to ceiling bookcases, plus five other bookcases around the house that vary between half height and full height. Some of these are a fairly narrow though. We still had to get rid of quite a lot of books because we had too many! The children all became avid readers and still are as young adults. They all seem to prefer an actual book too, rather than reading on a device. DD spends a fortune in the local independent bookshop. It's one of our favourite trips out. It's one of those with loads of little back and upstairs rooms - quite a maze - and they have so much variety it's wonderful.

TraitorLinda · 08/02/2025 13:35

No it’s just dusty clutter to me.
I read loads but using ipad as a kindle.

RampantIvy · 08/02/2025 13:35

unmemorableusername · 08/02/2025 13:27

Of course.

I feel sad when I see bookless homes.

Another bingo!
