Hello, would anyone like to join me and stop vaping tomorrow - cold turkey?

A support thread.

Hello @youngerself. I hope you had a good holiday and well done for hanging in there.

I am still vape free and nicotine free.

I am struggling but not in the way I thought I would. I am having a problem with my dopamine levels. Apparently it can take up to three months for these levels to go back to where they once were and even then, they will not be as high without nicotine! Now that is a shock. I feel tired, very tired and quite depressed. I am having to force myself to do everything. I am hoping this will improve and by the 3 month mark I will start to feel some improvement. ;(

I would like to say it is all good but actually I feel a whole lot worse.

Hi OP, just wanted to say, keep going! I've been exactly where you were - felt miserable and lacking in energy but suddenly after about a month, the oppposite happened and I've got more energy than I know what to do with. Its almost like a switch has flipped. The sense of good feeling you start to get, knowing you've stuck to giving up really does win through and starts to properly compensate for the feeling of missing something you loved.

You've done the hard part; just keep going!

sparrowflewdown · 04/03/2025 19:06

@thanksforthesun Thank you. That is what I wanted to hear! Well done for giving up too!

@sparrowflewdown how is the giving up going? After many false starts I am now 48 hours vape free.

Summerhillsquare · 19/03/2025 07:23

I am 2 days in and hating it!

youngerself · 19/03/2025 07:56

Almost 6 weeks vape free here.
Still on NRT patch and carrying sugar free mints and gum using it less
It's not been that hard once I made a clear decision.
I'll have a think about reducing NRT next

How are you doing OP? I hope things have improved since earlier in the month

I am sorry to say I caved and found my DH's vape in the wardrobe a couple of days ago. It was pretty much empty so only had a little bit. I haven't touched it since but still...hopefully I will just be a very occasional vaper like I used to be with cigarettes.

I do not feel like having any today so I have definitely knocked a massive dent in my addiction so not all bad news.

Well done to everyone else! Keep going. It is definitely worth it to break the daily habit. I do not think about vaping at all now.

I still vape but would love to get rid of my nicotine addiction. Every time I try I get the shakes and get so angry with everyone around me that they tell me to start again, most I've managed is two or three day and they have been hell.

I've tried NRT lozenges, spray, gum, but it's the same. I've spoken to my wellbeing nurse who said to ask at the pharmacy for Champix, but they won't prescribe it (even privately because I'm happy to pay) unless I'm actually smoking. It's ridiculous really. I gave up smoking using NRT via the NHS but switched to vaping because it was a fraction of the cost, but the nicotine addiction is very strong and I feel like I almost need to start actually smoking to get any medical help with it.

Either that or I need to be put in a coma for 12 days as according to my doctor that's how long it takes for the cravings to go.

Bumping an old thread but just wondered if you were still vaping/quit @sparrowflewdown and what the impact on your mood was?

I quit early June but experienced similar drop in mood. Also found an old one of DH's 🙈 and started again. I'm on day 4 of my second attempt at quitting and just wondering if the mood drop will happen and, importantly, if it lasts. I definitely don't want antidepressants but the overwhelming feeling of sinking into depression scared me back on to the vape!

Sorry to hear that @Vapeaddict. I am back on vaping too. I am going to try again in September. It is so hard as DH always has one knocking around. I have bought a vape that takes 10mg instead of 20mg though and I am going to wean myself off and then lower the amount of nicotine gradually.

Yesss I know exactly what you mean, so hard when temptation is always around. I managed about 5wks I think, the drop in my mood was so scary though. I cried a lot! I wasn't expecting that- although this time round, I'm expecting it but haven't got a plan for it 🙈
With hindsight I wish I'd waited til September too. School holidays was probably a bad time to try again! Hopefully your weaning off plan will make it a bit less painful 🤞

sparrowflewdown · 17/08/2025 23:25

Let's regroup in September...though the low mood is something else!

Good luck and keep me posted!
