Hello, would anyone like to join me and stop vaping tomorrow - cold turkey?

A support thread.

@bumblenbean Thank you. If I had a vape in the house I would have definitely caved in today. I have really struggled today.

I am a bit worried that I may go back to vaping very easily later down the line. I have heard for some people find it is hard to give up.

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/02/2025 22:59

why would you? I stopped smoking 15 years ago and dont plan to stop vaping anytime soon

sparrowflewdown · 12/02/2025 23:04

That is not helping. Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 12/02/2025 23:10

sorry @sparrowflewdown , but I am 54 and became addicted to nicotine aged 13. I have tried everything to kick it, Champix, cold turkey, NRT the whole lot and the only thing that helps is vaping.

My health is 100% better since I stopped smoking and so for me, vaping is the only way I will be able to cope with my life long addiction.

sparrowflewdown · 12/02/2025 23:19

@FunnysInLaJardin Yes that makes a lot of sense and it is great that it has helped you with stopping smoking.

Day 6. My sleep (or lack of) has been terrible. I was up until 2am last night again. Nicotine withdrawal is horrible. I was horrible yesterday. DH didn't help to put away the shopping and I was muttering all sorts of expletives for about 10 minutes, luckily he didn't hear but the kitchen window was and my neighbours probably did. Confused

I am not sure whether my physical symptoms are withdrawal related too. My throat is so painful and I have no energy and just want to curl up in bed.

OP posts:
youngerself · 13/02/2025 09:45

There are flu or cold like symptoms reported for nicotine withdrawal. I'm actually feeling as though I have a cold and wake with a sore throat despite NRT though I suppose I'm off it for 10 hours a day when I take it off to sleep and I've not put it on as yet today.
Keep going OP!
Theoretically I think you are over the worst of it now?
Can you see any positives?

sparrowflewdown · 13/02/2025 15:14

I suppose your immune system drops @youngerself Also dopamine levels too.

I have definitely replaced nicotine with sugar. I devoured a whole coconut and raspberry loaf cake from M&S today but tbf have eaten no other food and probably won't eat again today. I will tackle the sugar in a couple of days.

My DH did tell me to use nicotine patches etc as cold turkey would make me feel ill.

I am hopeful tomorrow will be a better day!

Positives...not having to buy silly vapes (I am quite embarrassed at 53)...not hiding in the the outside utility several times a day...the cost...health - not feeling the effects as yet! Nicotine did make me have lots of energy and I felt my mind was a lot sharper.

I was supposed to join last week but chickened out.

I put a patch on about an hour ago, and already forgot that I had done, as I was frantically searching for my vape. I miss it already lol.

When ever I try to quit, after a few hours I get so lethargic and feel like I'm on another planet, does anyone else feel like this?

sparrowflewdown · 14/02/2025 13:38

Great@overthinkersanonnymus

Day 7 - Today has been the best day so far, although the lethargy and flu-like symptoms are still here.

The worst days were 5&6. Last night was awful burning in my lungs and complete inertia. My mind was telling me that vaping was actually good for me as nicotine is the same as caffeine etc...I am still on the fence tbh. If I am drinking and eating crap food maybe vaping is better for me.

I started vaping November 2024 after coming off HRT. In just over 2 months, I was having a full elf bar a day. The dose of nicotine was so high I became addicted so fast. The nicotine withdrawal has been intense to say the least!Grin

When I smoked I was a social smoker mainly so just stopped when I had DC and there was no I am giving up counting the days etc - I just stopped. I have had a few cigarettes between age 40 and 50 but not many and no real cravings, only having one when I have had a very stressful time. Vaping is completely different and has taken me by surprise.

@sparrowflewdown are you still cold turkey?

I'm at 2 hours with a patch on and already pining for my plastic friend 😂

If you discount the Grin quadruple Disadoronni and coke per night - then yes!

OP posts:
sparrowflewdown · 14/02/2025 14:03

Don't do it! The cravings seem to come in waves and last 10-15minutes.

You can do this. Day 2 is not too bad.

youngerself · 14/02/2025 19:33

On day 7 here
I was going to stop last Friday but saw a man on ticktock saying don't stop if you've vaped earlier in the day so I started Saturday morning.
It feels a bit odd when I sit down to relaxing stuff like reading at night or sitting on MN while dinner cooks
I think the patch must help.
I'm still eating a load sugar free sweets and gum but not as much as earlier in the week
I'm going away for a city break on Sunday. I won't have any vape stuff with me (still in my handbag here🙄) and I definitely won't be paying European prices for a disposable vape - last time I noticed them in Majorca they were €12😳😳😳

bumblenbean · 14/02/2025 19:57

@sparrowflewdown you're doing so well - am very impressed!

I haven't even managed to keep up the 10 mins per hour thing and am back on them full force today 😆 bloody thing is never out of my hand

sparrowflewdown · 14/02/2025 23:10

@youngerself well done!

i haven't craved sugar, alcohol or a vape today!

I am eating about 20% more food. I will try to keep a check on that next week.

It seems day 7 is the first day of real improvements - we shall see...

@bumblenbean Many thanks! Smile
It is hard and I do not think that I am out of the woods yet.

Maybe a nicotine replacement might help you?

OP posts:
sparrowflewdown · 14/02/2025 23:14

@youngerself do you still feel ill?
Again well done for getting to 7 days! It's not much fun is it? :)

OP posts:
sparrowflewdown · 14/02/2025 23:20

Sorry @bumblenbean I forgot you have already stopped the nicotine vapes.

OP posts:
youngerself · 15/02/2025 00:25

No I feel fine now from that pov. I think it was a cold left over from the week before maybe but did too much on Sunday (1.5 hours of weights at the gym and then a 9k walk) and I should've rested a bit more

I went out tonight for a few drinks with a group. I still like the smell of fresh cigarettes but I was quite happy not to have to go outside to puff along with the smokers as I usually do as it's so cold

It's almost a full week for me now and I'm determined not to go back

youngerself · 15/02/2025 00:29

I'm staying on the patches for the next 3 weeks at full strength of 21 mg
Then, despite the companies saying don't cut them, I'll start trimming them a bit so that I have less nicotine from them and maybe use for fewer hours

sparrowflewdown · 15/02/2025 11:48

@youngerself that's brilliant! I could not trust myself on a night out yet. Let us know how you get on with reducing the patches, I want my DH to quit this way.

Day 8 - The first day I feel like I am returning to my former self! No vape cravings so far. I am not grabbing for crutches or over eating.

I do not feel tired!

OP posts:
youngerself · 15/02/2025 13:38

@sparrowflewdown
Thank you
I'm pleased with a week under my belt now but I think I have had an easier time with it than you as I've used the patches! I'm probably storing up a more prolonged palaver than you by doing it this way
You've done especially well if your partner is still ?vaping or smoking

I'm away with DD and she's not keen on my vaping at all so that's one problem solved

youngerself · 22/02/2025 12:59

How's anyone doing?

I'm a fortnight vape free, still on 21mg patch. I'm away for some sun a week today so will stay on that dose until I'm back to normal at home.

I think about vaping occasionally but it only lasts seconds - it's the habit of putting it in my mouth that feels lacking I think rather than any desperate need.

Noticeably fewer sweets last few days. I've just driven home for an hour and not had any. On a similar length drive the day after I quit, I was sucking and chewing the whole way!

youngerself · 03/03/2025 08:38

This thread seems to have petered out unfortunately.
It's been 3 and a half weeks since I last vaped and it has been ok apart from wanting something sweet in my mouth for the first week or so.
I still go to reach for my vape at certain times but it literally lasts a few seconds.

I'd thought about stopping for years but it was the thought of its effect on insulin resistance that clicked and I knew I couldn't do it any more

From my experience, I would recommend NRT patch to anyone wishing to stop as I presume it has significantly helped me

Good luck to anyone still on this path
