When would you go to A&E?

I suffer from chronic constipation, I've been to the GP in the past and they just have me tons of laxido and senna to use "sparingly/when needed" but that was it.

The hematologist mentioned it was related to my iron malabsorption (by not dieting it, it sediments in my colon and causes blockages). He also said there was nothing that could be done, and it had never been mentioned again.

So I've been suffering from a blockage for the last 3 weeks I still go, so I get some relief, but this time the laxatives have stopped working which made me go to the pharmacy. There the very kind pharmacist gave me like 20 mins of his time because he was shocked that after 4 senna tablets NOTHING has moved. I took them in one go btw. He then told me the next step was A&E because there was not much more tablets could do.

So then he told me to take 8 sachets of laxido and that if still nothing had moved it was hospital time.

So here I am 12 hours after I took the first 2 sachets, and about 6 since I took the last 2 (8 total) and still nothing! I just have pain but that's it.

Given that I'm not a priority case, would it make more sense to wait it out another day (and take 8 more sachets)? I'm thinking of popping in after my 9am meeting hoping that they see me before the school run, and if they don't, I just walk back home. The only thing is that for the past 5 days it has become super painful, especially my lower back.

Jesus OP, aren't you uncomfortable? I don't think I've ever been this invested in a strangers bowl habits.

Me neither- this is the first thread I check when I pick up my phone.

same thing happened to me (although not as bad) and the memory still haunts me. Thinking of you Op.

There has been a breakthrough, no I haven't gone to the toilet BUT I can actually feel the lump, it's right to the left of my appendix scar, and once pressed I fart ( sorry TMI)

I have a message gun which I'll use on that spot.

But that doesn't make sense, appendix scars are not close to rectums so pressing on it would not make you fart or if it did it is purely coincidental.

You're passing wind, you've passed soft faecal matter I believe so things are obviously working just not as you have come to expect but bowel action can change for no specific reason. Have you been up and about, lots of activity?

It pisses me off when people get dismissed by some health professionals because they don’t seem to be in enough pain. I don’t scream when I’m in pain. When I had a ruptured Fallopian tube - a medical emergency - the GP sent me home and muttered something about a hospital appointment for reassurance. I was in surgery the next morning. Similar situation when I was in labour. ‘Oh you don’t sound like you’re in labour at all. No need to come down yet’ sighs midwife. Later at the hospital, I just about managed not to give birth in the lift. I was in pain. Of course I was. It just didn’t seem like it to anyone else. I’m sure I’m a long way from being the only person who expresses physical pain by turning inward. I don’t have some amazingly high pain threshold, I’m just not very vocal.

Follow your instincts OP. I think I’d go back to A&E if things haven’t improved very soon.

I ended up giving birth to first baby on my own as midwife said 'I wasn't grimacing enough' so sent me home- and twat ex husband thought I was making a fuss so he went to bed.

Farting is a good sign your bowels are starting to move!
I've been checking this thread for updates! I'm not usually fixated on a strangers bowel movements

This is the second time for me - last time was a first post-partum poo, like over a week after the birth and also after a lot of lactulose. Now she weighed herself before and after which is where I got the idea, and it weighed more than the actual baby. I can't imagine the relief that must have been.

What are your plans re the GP in the morning @Usedphone

My GPs are kind of useless, so I think I'd wait after 5 for out of hours.

Either that or going back to A&E and tell them that 32 sachets haven't really done anything

I would go back first thing.

GiddyRobin · 10/02/2025 01:21

You absolutely need to go back to A&E. I've had similar after surgery, but nowhere near this long and the cause was just that...surgery. It was one of the most distressing times of my life, I genuinely would rather have given birth again (which I had done a week prior!).

Please don't let them fob you off. You need them to take you seriously, go back and put your foot down. You absolutely need to sort this before you go abroad, too.

The Fleet enemas are good. You can get them from Amazon, but I don't know if they'll be useful for you at this point you're at. If you get nothing from a doctor, I'd be tempted to try. It's just saline.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 10/02/2025 02:43

Definitely insists that they do something even an x-ray to see where the block is and try to get it from all sides.

Similar happened me a few years ago, I was in hospital in a rehabilitation ward and I asked to see a Dr as I hadn't gone #2 for 1 day which doesn't ring any alarm bells and was feeling very slightly nauseous and a dull feeling in my stomach but not pain and a bad taste at the back of my throat.

The Dr wasn't keen to do anything only offer laxatives as my stomach felt soft. He agreed to order an x-ray when I insisted, so it was to be an x-ray before starting laxatives, on way to x-ray I started vomiting faecal matter, I was entirely blocked and needed NJ and NG tubes while being dosed with fluids, laxatives, softener, enemas and suppositories and finally manual disimpaction.

The relief when I finally could go again was incredible. hopefully you get that same relief soon

Morning ladies, after the most excruciating pain (plus 4 extra sennas) I've finally had something come out!

I definitely feel much better

Thank goodness, I’ve been worried for you

Joystir59 · 10/02/2025 07:02

Well done OP, I hope it was a lot of something!

TallulahBetty · 10/02/2025 10:10

Thank goodness, hope you're not in too much pain

LushLemonTart · 10/02/2025 10:21

Excellent news

Normallynumb · 10/02/2025 11:20

Excellent news OP

Ilovelowry · 10/02/2025 11:21

OP make sure you keep taking the movicol/lactulose and tons of water. You need to get back on a regular routine if poss.

Itcostshowmuchnow · 10/02/2025 11:34

Have you tried prune juice yet?

Oh my days, that's awful 😮
(He does sound like a twat and glad he's your ex!)

OP, have you tried rubbing castor oil on your stomach whilst you massage? Also put a dollop in your belly button (I do this every night) - some evidence that it helps shift things.
I'm seriously concerned about your poor body right now, you must feel so crap 🙁

@Usedphone Was there enough to be all of it?

What will you do now? Keep taking the sachets maybe. You really don't need to end up in the USA with a preexisting problem, BUT if you can get rid of it now, and keep up the laxatives, even a week or two of not completely emptying would be manageable.

TheAmusedQuail · 10/02/2025 12:54

Itcostshowmuchnow · 10/02/2025 11:34

Have you tried prune juice yet?

YES! And keep taking the prune juice (at least 2 really large glasses daily) and that should keep things moving somewhat.

overthinkersanonnymus · 10/02/2025 12:55

🙌

Threewheeler1 · 10/02/2025 12:59

Hallelujah!
Keep going OP, you'll feel as light as a feather when you get shot of it all!
(Apologies, I think I might be a bit of a weirdo for celebrating your bowel movement 😬)

DoNotIron · 10/02/2025 14:48

Great news OP! Let's hope you manage to get the rest out with as little pain as possible. What a horrible experience for youFlowers

pollymere · 10/02/2025 15:14

When I got impacted I got given saline enemas to use at home and recommended to take a double dose. I'm surprised you're being given oral treatments to be honest.

The saline enemas worked a treat but it was a great deal like giving birth. Definitely Minor Injuries or Urgent Care. Not A&E.

DailyMNonlooker · 10/02/2025 15:34

Ah finally! I was worried that going back to AandE wouldn't do much tbh. Unless you're being sick, distended hard belly or in excruciating pain they would have probably just sent you away again. Could you tell it was the blockage you passed?
Also I did some research last night and found out severe constipation can actually make you puke up poop. So that's gross.
