When would you go to A&E?

I suffer from chronic constipation, I've been to the GP in the past and they just have me tons of laxido and senna to use "sparingly/when needed" but that was it.

The hematologist mentioned it was related to my iron malabsorption (by not dieting it, it sediments in my colon and causes blockages). He also said there was nothing that could be done, and it had never been mentioned again.

So I've been suffering from a blockage for the last 3 weeks I still go, so I get some relief, but this time the laxatives have stopped working which made me go to the pharmacy. There the very kind pharmacist gave me like 20 mins of his time because he was shocked that after 4 senna tablets NOTHING has moved. I took them in one go btw. He then told me the next step was A&E because there was not much more tablets could do.

So then he told me to take 8 sachets of laxido and that if still nothing had moved it was hospital time.

So here I am 12 hours after I took the first 2 sachets, and about 6 since I took the last 2 (8 total) and still nothing! I just have pain but that's it.

Given that I'm not a priority case, would it make more sense to wait it out another day (and take 8 more sachets)? I'm thinking of popping in after my 9am meeting hoping that they see me before the school run, and if they don't, I just walk back home. The only thing is that for the past 5 days it has become super painful, especially my lower back.

Hope things improve soon OP - sounds very distressing.

I was also thinking colonic irrigation, but maybe not suitable in your extreme case. Definitely try a&e again - Might be quiet Sunday morning.🤞🏻

good luck!

Sorry if not appropriate but have you tried fybogel? Might this soften things? I’m no expert just a thought.

Usedphone · 09/02/2025 08:24

After a night of feeling bubbles around my appendix area, I had another bit of leaking.

I think I'm getting there as the pressure has moved a little bit. M

I'll have coffee and yoga and see if that helps!

I can't believe not much has changed with 24 sachets

Keep going. Drink as much as you can with it too. If you start vomiting go to A and E.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 09/02/2025 11:09

its odd I have always had bowel problems ending up in hospital several times, but over the years, trial and error, I find that sugary cola does the trick. if I am stuck get a cheap 2 litre bottle from Tesco drink that throughout the day. even if I am not looking to move things if say we are out and I grab a can for a drink it is not long before I am looking for a loo!

Timetosparkle478 · 09/02/2025 13:04

Have you done a glycerine suppository?

thistlepiedpiper · 09/02/2025 13:16

I suffer really bad with chronic constipation. Every 2 weeks or so I have a flare up and take daily fybogel and use anusol.
Last week I had a blockage from 2.5 weeks that (sorry TMI) was massive and I eventually got it low enough down to manually remove myself. If you can feel pain when you're sitting down you may be able to go in from your vagina and break it up into smaller pieces and drag them down and out

Sorry op I do understand and feel your pain. Wishing you a big bowel movement very soon

Oblomov25 · 09/02/2025 13:50

Poor op. She went to A&E and was dismissed. Hope it sorts itself out before you go away.

noodlebugz · 09/02/2025 15:40

Personally I’d be going back to an and e as a reattender. The leaking is overflow. 24 sachets of laxido is excessive.
Make it clear the overflow is undignified, the breathlessness is frightening and it can’t continue and that you probably need a surgical review to rule out partial bowel obstruction.
Back in the day they used to take people who went back fairly seriously though it’s a long time since I’ve done any shifts in an and e.
My shout would be for sodium picosulphate for maintenance in the future. I really do hope you get sorted out. x

LushLemonTart · 09/02/2025 16:18

I agree you definitely need seeing again. The leakage is just overflow from the obstruction.

Just be careful. My husband had similar.

He took felt a bit better after some leakage but it was just a small amount and the blockage remained.

When the pain became worse again a two days later I forced him to A&E and it's a good job I did because he had a perforated bowel.

If you get pain and no proper movement, seek medical help again.

DailyMNonlooker · 09/02/2025 17:32

When do you go away? Have you managed to eat anything today? Maybe just eat prunes if nothing else. Also like lots of people have advised, a suppository might be worth trying, especially if the pressure has moved down a bit. What's the update tonight?

Normallynumb · 09/02/2025 17:40

I'm sorry you're still struggling
If you feel slight movement and pressure it sounds like a positive but if it becomes very painful Please do seek help again
TMI but maybe Vaseline or some lubricant applied with a finger may help

Usedphone · 09/02/2025 18:47

Sorry ladies, unfortunately not much of an update, as still no movement, and from sticking my fingers there's nothing around there, I swear I can feel the blockage because even when trying to go, I feel even more pain exactly around my appendix.

I've now taken 30 sachets, so tomorrow will be A&E for sure if there is no improvement.

massage your stomach firmly

Lalalalalalalalalalaoohoohwee · 09/02/2025 18:53

Jesus OP, aren't you uncomfortable? I don't think I've ever been this invested in a strangers bowl habits.

Normallynumb · 09/02/2025 18:57

Massage firmly around the " lump"
Cycling on back too
Have you managed to eat today?

WickWood · 09/02/2025 18:58

You poor thing. I hope A&E are helpful tomorrow!

LushLemonTart · 09/02/2025 19:04

@Usedphone good luck. This must be so distressing 😞

@Usedphone I was so hoping your update would be good news. Must be awful. Hopefully going to A & E tomorrow will get you somewhere. 🙏🏻

Usedphone · 09/02/2025 19:40

There has been a breakthrough, no I haven't gone to the toilet BUT I can actually feel the lump, it's right to the left of my appendix scar, and once pressed I fart ( sorry TMI)

I have a message gun which I'll use on that spot.

Seriously really hoping it works. Do you have a hot water bottle? Maybe warm your tum or rub it in a warm bath maybe?

HaroldLeftEye · 09/02/2025 20:15

Out of interest have you weighed yourself recently? Could you do a before and after?
